This is my least favorite Robbins novel. He’s set the bar pretty high so I hate giving it three stars but comparatively it’s just what it is. The story is entertaining but underdeveloped and the character who I was most intrigued by never got the resolution or explanation that I felt was sort of necessary. What’s the deal with the chrysanthemum? I’ve understood every other part of the story but I just felt like that was an idea that Robbins had in the beginning and never finished it or explained it. There was so much conflict and build up which should have been growing over generations and then it felt like he just wanted to focus on the three MIAs… I will admit though that Robbins is still an incredible writer and his prose and ideas are worth going over. I loved the themes of religion and the ambiguity of divinity. How to be content in your soul and spirituality. And wholeheartedly agree on the stance of maya (the materialist illusion of the world) being the main strife for humanity. I like the way he played with different worlds to present this topic of a cultural veil keeping us superficial and subdued. Anyways I’ve been rambling. Read the book if you want to!
