Great story of the toll the Iranian revolution took on families and individuals. I already knew I loved Persepolis when I picked up Volume 3 at the library. Basically, I just read it for the language practice, so I would recommend starting with Persepolis 1.

Marjane in Europe was interesting to read, (especially her encounter with the nuns) and her portrayal of her depression. I think this was probably my favourite in the series

Persepolis tells the moving life story of Marjane Satrapi and her experiences growing up in Iran during the Islamic Revolution and how she slowly grew out of her oppression do to her exposure to punk culture and spending her high school and college years in foreign lands which opened her mind to many different ways of living. It balances the everyday struggles of young girls with the dark side of religious extremism, oppressive traditionalism, forced re-education systems in the media and schools to brainwash the youth into conforming to the unfair demands of the people in power, overcoming prejudice and rebelling against tyranny.

The first half of the story covers some really brutal subject matter through the eyes of Marjane as a child. It's disturbing and depressing, watching the lives of millions of innocent people get caught up in the crossfire of political upheaval, war and tyranny. You get tortured and hanged for speaking out of line, not dressing a certain way or enjoying art and music not approved by the ridiculous standards of the tyrants running things. It's terrifying how easily family, friends and classmates can be put to death for the most minor offenses that are taken for granted as basic rights in other places. Extremist agendas like this breed fear, hatred and misery in the people that live under such an oppressive rule and it also inspires similar feelings from outsiders.

It's not right to judge a culture or its people based on the tyrants and extremists that govern them. It's cruel to condemn the peaceful and loving majority based on the actions of the minority of evil people. There are bad eggs in every country, religion, and culture, that doesn't change the fact that most of them aren't evil by any means of the word. Exploring this tragic situation through the eyes of a powerless child who never did anything wrong reinforces this idea. We can't help but root for her with every subtle act of rebellion that defies the cruelty of her leaders. She speaks out against the people that try to hold her back, she defies the expectations of prejudiced bigots and does her best to find joy in a joyless society. She never resorts to violence and makes of good example through inspiring acts of kindness, humor and defiance.

The second half of the series mostly explores Marjane's more down-to-earth struggles of a growing woman in a European education system after spending most of her life under an oppressive regime. Punk culture is the norm rather than a true act of rebellion, people make out in the open when she could've been executed for holding a man's hand or showing her hair in public back in her homeland. Then of course she had to suffer the ignorance of people that hated her because they've been poisoned by the media into believing all of Islam is the backwards plague of the earth and everyone who lives there is a barbaric savage. Understandably, she goes through many ups and downs in her younger years.

Both sides of her story are equally challenging and frightening for very different reasons. But all of the dark subject matter is mostly tackled with an optimistic and humorous tone. The story humanizes the daily struggles of Marjane and her people, depicts the consequences of oppression and defiance, and explores the light and dark side of cultural differences and prejudice. It's always great to experience the trials of history through the eyes of someone that actually endured it rather than someone in a position of power or control. The author is very intimate about her experiences and it's easy to relate to her struggles, regardless of whether or not you like her as a person or agree with all of the things she says and does. Even if you're not really into reading about someone's personal life in extremely intimate detail, it's worth reading for the historical and cultural context alone.
