I remember reading (devouring) this book when I was in college, salivating over Becky Bloomwood’s shopping finds and falling madly in love with Luke Brandon. I was hesitant about rereading this because I was worried that it wouldn’t have the same charm it held for me from when I was younger, but I was wrong. It’s just as delightful, funny, and hopeful. I’ve been reading so many serious books these past years that this is such a welcome, much-needed break. ♥️

Tal como o primeiro, este é um daqueles livros indicados para quando queremos algo mais leve e divertido.

Becky is crazy. Just when you thought she had her life together after the first book, think again! I have an idea what to expect in the next...

I am not a fan of Luke. Becky should have stayed broken up with him. I do not know what she sees because the reasons she broke up with him are the reasons she should. He was never there for her, didn’t have time for her, and didn’t think anything related to her was important enough to rate over his stuff. She doesn’t seem to be with him for the money, so the only thing that’s left is his looks and sex. A nice solid foundation for a functioning relationship.

Anyway, very funny book. Will definitely continue the series.

PS Alicia is evil.

I am glad that I re-read this book, but feel disappointed overall with how the earlier books in the Shopaholic series no longer stand up. I think it's because I have already read these books and the latest, that I just feel nothing but flat out annoyance towards Rebecca (Becky) and her hare-brained schemes to not pay her bills, to cover up when she's in over her head, and somehow through sheer luck to get out of trouble. And then somehow is in the right in the end when she is 100 percent in the wrong.

I read the first book several years ago and remember being charmed by it. In this second book, we now have Becky and Luke dating. Becky has convinced Luke to go off and take a mini-break to the country. While there she realizes that Luke has plans to expand his company to America, specifically New York. Becky after the events in the last book has paid off all of her debts and thinks she finally has her shopping bug under control.

Spoilers, she does not.

Pretty much Becky acts as if she has paid her bills off, that apparently if she uses her credit card that means her balance stays zero. Considering that Becky is a financial expert (seriously this was always funny to me) on a morning television show, you would think she be a bit smarter. I think readers are supposed to find Becky endearing. I just found her to be hopelessly immature.

Becky's relationship with her parents is to keep them in the dark (though you of course realize they are not that dumb) and she wants Luke to make a public declaration of his love for her. Honestly, I never got to be much of Luke fan until the later books. He feels like a non-person in these earlier books. We are given bare bone facts about him and you can feel yourself sympathizing with him. But then we are supposed to ignore his need to prove himself in America cause Becky gets her feelings hurt when they go to New York.

There are secondary characters long time readers know about like Tarquin and Suze. They also don't age very well in this second book in my opinion.

The writing was okay, but the flow was pretty bad. I think it is because you are just waiting for the characters to move along to New York. Of course once we move from London to New York I was bored senseless. You don't get a real sense of the city, crowds, movement, the uniqueness of New York. That's cause all Becky is focused on is shopping and hiding it from Luke.

The ending at first I thought redeemed itself. But when we go to two months later and things are just kind of hand-waved away and Luke telling Becky how right she is (after once again having her finances get to threat level midnight levels) I just yawned myself through it.

I read this for Romance Book Bingo 2017 square: Second Chances

This fits that square because the main couple breaks up and then gets back together at the end of the book..

Oh how I love this book, its hilarious. I have never in real life or fiction seen anyone shop with such dedication and she gets away with it with such flair. Its just the perfect light read.

How could you not be excited for Becky Bloomwood and her traveling to New York City with her hot new man. New love is so much fun and I love reading about the ins and outs of it. Plus, the best shopaholic is in NYC, one of the best cities for fashion lovers. If you loved part 1 like I did you will not be disappointed by part 2.

Things seem to be going so well for Rebecca Bloomwood: her slot handing out financial advice to housewives on Morning Coffee is doing great; she's going out with one of Britain's most handsome and eligible bachelors, Luke Brandon; and she has a new excuse to buy lots of clothes and shoes: "investing in her career".

But those pesky bills keep coming in the mail and her bank manager, Derek Smeath, has decided to retire - with a warning that his replacement won't be so flexible about her overdraft. Not only that, but no one in her parent's neighbourhood believes she's going out with Luke - even her parents have their doubts - because no one's seen them together: he's always busy, there are always last-minute meetings and problems he has to see to, and he's always unintentionally standing her up.

He's also being very secretive, though Becky's arch-nemesis Alicia lets drop that Luke's planning to move to New York, leaving Becky behind. Bottling all her hurt and worry inside, Becky's surprised and delighted when, far from leaving her behind, he invites her along on a two-week trip to establish his company in Manhattan, and Becky her TV career - with the intention of moving there, together, permanently if things work out.

The trip starts well but soon old and new problems crop up: Becky can't stop shopping, especially with all these sample sales they have there, and there are problems with Luke's PR company that are sabotaging his New York ambitions. To top it off, Becky must meet his scary socialite mother, who has no time for the son who wants nothing more than to make her proud: it's a mess, and it's about to blow up in both of their faces.

The sequel to Confessions of a Shopaholic, this book picks up a few months later. It's easy to get comfy with Becky's life and story, and pick up where you left off - there's a few replay paragraphs neatly placed here and there to help jog your memory, and they're nicely integrated.

I read very little chick-lit, because I find most of it be pretty dumb to be honest. I enjoyed the first book in this series far more than I was expecting to, and I quickly went out and bought the next two. That was a while ago, but it's good to pace yourself with this kind of thing. Becky's shopping addiction can get a bit much. I just don't share her need to buy things and consume - especially shoes - and her flimsy self-justification arguments really caused me pain at times. It's not something you would often hear about chick-lit, but this book actually made me stressed.

Despite that, or perhaps because Becky always pulls her socks up and comes through, showing that she's not quite the ditz she seems when she's shopping (and all her "Erm... Fine! Absolutely!" responses to people when she doesn't know or doesn't like what they're saying). Luke, too, can hold my attention - he doesn't actually come across as a bastard at all, and in fact the writing's quite skilful in showing what's really going on. They have some decent chemistry but it's not always clear how Becky feels about him.

This is a good, fun, quick read - stressful, yes, when you see Becky digging herself in deeper; she's not a comic character so I'm not able to just laugh it off. I care about her too much, is the thing. That's what also makes this series so successful, because Becky is a character who shouldn't be so sympathetic. It's interesting. It's also an intelligent book, which also keeps me reading (on a side note, I tried reading Kinsella's The Undomestic Goddess a couple of years ago and have to say it was dreadful - and goes to show she's better at sticking to what she knows: financial journalism and shopping).

If you've seen the movie, you'll recognise bits from the second-half as coming from this book - I watched it between books so I thought they'd made a lot of it up. Makes a lot more sense now! Things ended so satisfyingly that I'm keen to read the next one, but I have hold off because too much Becky in one go will be too much for me.

Alternate title: Pathological liar goes to Manhattan and lies some more

Honestly it’s not even the excessive shopping for me - ‘Shopaholic’, it’s in the title so I can’t be that mad. But the lying!? Goodness me it drained the soul out of me just reading about the main character’s lie after lie after lie. I love the concept and story of this one too but wow it really screamed ‘I lie to everyone who loves me and when I get in a bit of trouble I blame everyone for not having my back to me and that’s on being toxic and manipulative.

Sophie Kinsella is the perfect author if you want a light, fun read.

The Shopaholic series is fun to read. The main character is delightfully clueless at how to act like an adult.

hahahahaha!!!!! I mean her life is fabulous and terrific and pathetic at the same time. I love this book, I totally love this book. because like Becky, I myself put my leg on an axe so many times, screwed my life so many phases of my life still I survive the situation by continuous witty lies (don't judge me okay? I have also a good heart like her) and then one day wins everybody's heart and my luck with my truth and hard work. It's a fun read, a very comfy read to relax your mind. highly recommended to depressed soul.
