A veces me pregunto si esta conspiración es el arco de todo el manga (en cuyo caso me da un poco de pánico pensar qué se está guardando para más adelante) o si realmente ya estamos en el clímax de este arco y luego el resto de tomos tendrá otros.

The extras and little biographical sketches and author notes add so much to the reading experience, especially in volume 10. Arakawa did a lot of research so she could include such gruesomely lovely tidbits as Mustang describing how the fat of an incinerated body aerosolizes and makes his lips feel sticky. Also, I loved discovering that Chapter 38 initially had more jokes than action.

Vol 10 is a smorgasbord of fantastic character beats and rapid story movement. Everyone is growing up, crossing boundaries and borders, and somehow they all manage to discuss this amidst the mayhem. The regenerative powers of the homunculi and Hoenheim's agelessness are an ideal contrast. Ed looks older on the cover image, and whether intentional or not, it's the perfect signal that act two of this saga moves forward, and you better hold on tight.

OMG, this is the best volume so far and the art in it is on another level. I have finally started to like Roy and I so badly want to learn about Xing's alchemy. You are telling me that the Easterners can sense a person's chi and count souls???? That is so cooooool!!!!! And I KNEW Daddy Sin was Ed and Al's father. The moment he was introduced in volume 8, I knew it. They look way too similar. We have already seen that the Homunculi can have normal human children (Bradley's son). It makes zero sense now but I trust Arakawa.
The thing that bothered me is that I have lost almost all my respect and fear for the villains, especially for Envy. How incompetent can he get? Lanfan killed him about 10 times on-page. He is supposed to be this almost immortal being and he keeps getting killed by a mortal without inflicting even minute damage to them. Really? At least his incompetency was addressed. Also, it was hard to believe that all the soldiers made it out alive from battling freaking Homunculi. I had started to like Havoc but he should have died, simply being paralyzed is not enough.
And they killed Lust! Whaaatttt, she was the best one... I wish it was Envy.
So excited for the next volume!

We get a big fight in this volume, Lanfan vs Envy, Gluttony vs Riza and eventually, Roy vs Lust, and that half of the volume is FANTASTIC.

We get to see Ling and Lanfan fight and hold their own, and we get to see Roy and Havoc likewise working as a team. We also see Riza completely fall apart and while this was not my fav when I first read this series I get it now. It's not just done to kill her off, it's a genuine character moment for her, and I think it makes sense for the story being told. I do feel so bad for Havoc tho.

Roy has his big badass moments. Not only did he not kill Maria, but he fucking burned his wound closed to get up and kill Lust. What a moment.

RIP Barry, he was evil, but it was a gnarly death.

We also get some little nuggets that I think hint at some lore. We see that philosopher stones are the heart of the homonculus, and it can't be used. Lust thinks of herself as human enough and I'm inclined to agree somewhat. Especially when we see Gluttony mourn Lust, and Envy get mad at Wrath for not avenging her death. Also, as one might guess we get hints that a Pride and Sloth exist.

The cselkcess ruins also offer an intriguing setting. As do the stories of a philosopher from east and west. Hmmm....

Also, hints of things I know I read in volumes 11-17 which I won't spoil, but great to see the intent even back then.

(Also, love Ling's relief that they survived in contrast to the badass battle, lol Even Lust's I hate rude men when she destroys Barry. The humor is still here and it's better balanced imo.)

Meanwhile, as is hinted at on page one, Ed is taken away to see Maria. We get some great character moments. Breda scolding him for being a child, Ed having his big resolve to continue on his quest, Foo having a contact which makes sense, and the scene w the Ishvalan people. I'm holding off talking about their treatment until the end, but I will be looking at that, because they're clearly a stand in for real world people, who are often misrepresented.

I will say, the death of one child speech is a good one. So much food for thought in this series.

And of course, we end with Hohenheim. The trash father, what will we find out about him next volume?

I don't feel as though this series is going anywhere. I am a third of the way through and it already feels as though the story should be wrapping itself up and yet it isn't. Lust dies in this one, but I am expecting a comeback. Lust's boobs are certainly the most interesting part of this volume as redundant and sexist as that sounds. Not much of Winry in this volume and I love her character tbh Not much of Ed or Al either. Roy Mustang is brilliant however, perhaps my favourite character so far. He's cool with his knowledge on alchemy where fire is involved.

Ed crossed the desert with a few colonels here and there and made it to another fictional country where a war had just been held. The homunculi, gluttony, envy and wrath should certainly be cooler but so far, gluttony is a repetitive pain in the ass and envy is more or less a good for nothing creep. I don't see how Ed was feeling hot in the desert even if his arm is made of metal. The remainder of his limb should not conduct heat, right?

I have higher hopes for this series considering how highly rated it is. I can't say I am impressed. Had a way more solid start tbh :) Also quite confusing and hard to follow at times. Not much indication as to where and when we are placed and much assuming has to be done. The extra comics at the end of the tale are funny but pointless and reduce my overall appreciation of the story especially after serious concepts are tackled.

Once again, Hiromu Arakawa delivers yet another top-notch action in FMA volume 10! The lore of alchemy is once again expanded in its already complex plot of transmutation, politics, family drama, and war.

Fullmetal alchemist has everything you can ask for in manga.

More than a few secrets were revealed during this issue: how to "kill" a homunculus, how they are able to function, who is leading them (I CALLED IT), and a pleasant surprise for Edward out east. I feel like the inclusion of the Ishbalans can be a little confusing, since I feel like they just glossed over the whole aspect of the civil war (or I've missed something along the way).
