I read the book as required, then listened to the self-hypnosis disk, I am now eagerly awaiting a dramatic change in my exterior looks - e.g. less lumpy bits. Watch this space!
Wanted to see what Allen Carr's method was all about because I got the smokers version for my mum, but came out of it severely disappointed. Throughout the whole book he gaslights readers into dismissing expert nutritionists and scientists in favour of what he tells you, based on nothing. It's a shame because there is some very sound nutritional advice here and I think a book like this could help people who have an unhealthy relationship with food but don't know where to start to fix it, however, this is simply not it. He also spends the whole book promising things that never happened.
Maybe his book for smokers is better than this one, I can't judge because I'm not its target audience, but as someone who has struggled with both an eating disorder and body dysmorphia throughout my life, I can tell you to stay away from this.
So this is time to confess - i do have problems with overeating. I cannot stop eating, and i can live for months only on junk food. I am not overweight (well, I spend everyday in the gym working out like crazy, why do you think I have zero progress with all my reading challenges)))), and this only makes it more difficult to solve, i think, cause 1. no one understands or believes or cares (even if i try to ask for help, they just look at me like i am inventing problems out of boredom), and 2. Well, i look ok, so there is no shocking realisation that i need to change my life urgently. I read Easy way to stop smoking few years ago out of desperation cause i couldn't stop on my own (maybe i have addictive personality - smoking, overeating))) and - wow! miracle - it did work! I still highly recommend that book to anyone who WANTS to stop smoking. I knew that Allen's easy way to loose weight is based on vegetarianism and for a long time, being a meat eater, i didn't read it only because of this. Lately i have been trying new things and stopping eating meat was under consideration for half a year maybe. And so when i was once again on my crazy trip to non-stop eating of huge amounts of junk food (and when i say huge I mean huge, such amounts which cause pain but you still do not stop and you can hardly move in the end...), i decided to read it cause 1. the other book worked as by some miracle, 2. I kind of wanted to stop eating meat and i already had it very rarely. What can i say... It does not work if you have some real problems with overating and not just being stupid. Cause, well, it states so many well-known facts which are basic and not new to anyone. And except vegetarian approach, you can find these recommendations in any free and short internet article. This time his repeating the same thing 100 times does not work. What especially irritated me are his rules, such as, eat only when you are hungry, stop eating the same moment you stop feeling hunger. Come on, if i could do it, I wouldn't read your book! What do you think, i didn't know that if you eat more when you need, you would be overweight? So in the end i am in the same place i was before i started reading, except i did stop eating meat. Which I think i would do anyway. I just decided, well, i paid money for this, i need to get at least something out of this book. ))) P.S.: please no comments on the problem, like you should go to the doctor, etc. I do work on it, it is just not that easy and sometimes you think, oh, i just want a magic button which will solve this in a second. But I haven't found one so far, and if you are also looking for it, this book is not the answer.
Allen Carr's Easy way to quit smoking helped me pack in the cigarettes . I figured if he can fix my smoking addiction he can help me with over eating. So far so good, I am half way through. As I am a Vegan I can understand the subject of cows milk is for calves and raw food is best. I really like how he explains things and uses a car as a metaphor for our bodies. In the section that I have just read he is explaining why it is best to eat when you are hungry. At first I wanted to shake my head and say no its not! I eat so much more when I am "Starving" then when I am kinda hungry. Then I realised I over eat either way. So far what he has to say is striking a cord with me. I really do hope by the end of this book I can put it down with a similar revelation that I had when finishing the easy way to quit smoking.
After reading this book:- I found that Allen Carr was very preachy in this novel. It did not move me as much as his easy way to quit smoking book did. I will take on his advice, I have started only having fruit in the morning and as I am a vegan it is really easy for me to separate foods.
I lent this book to my Mam, she read it on the weekend and did not like this at all. My Mam quit smoking about 23 years ago and found that Carr's constant mention of cigarettes was making her want to smoke again!
I do not think I would recommend this book to other readers unless they are vegetarian as some of Carr's suggestions are a tad hard to swallow if you are a big meat eater.
Some of it makes sense - it’s pretty straightforward and there’s no magic involved. Really it’s message is quite simply “Stop eating stupid stuff”. His central conceit that you can Eat as much of your favourite foods as you want as often as you want and be the exact weight you want to be is only believable if all you want to eat is fresh fruit and raw vegetables (and maybe some legumes and wholemeal grains). Further, all processed food is junk and you can have a little bit but don’t let it become your staple diet. You’re either on board with what he’s saying or not. I gave him a pass on a lot of it because his quit smoking book changed my perception of smoking and helped me at a tough time. This book won’t become your weight loss bible but it can help to read if you are like me looking for alternatives to diets and sick of all the bad foods masquerading as healthy foods.
I am entering this book four years after reading it, and it was borrowed from the library, so I don't have it to refer to. I can remember nothing about it except, possibly, it was one of the "follow your instincts, only eat when you are hungry, mostly fruit and vegetables" approach. If my scales could type this review they would point out that obviously the book did not inspire me or motivate me. We all know that if we just ate fruit and veg and not a lot else we'd lose weight, and I don't particulalry over eat any food but I DO, under exercise. I need a book that motivates me to get back to the gym or even just out in the fresh air for longer than the walk to the car.
Im one of those fortunate people who used the author's other book to quit smoking. Do you know how big that is? Well, it is a mighty big deal. I thought this book will reveal to me a whole lot of why I eat, what I eat, get into my psyche to let go of hunger pangs but it just uses common sense, a brief history of the world, human nature, animal nature to try to propel its theory. And ultimately the book bored me because I felt it contained no real moving chapters. Just some general guidelines which are based on scientific observations.
To put it simply, don't even bother reading other reviews. Just don't read this book.
This book conforms to stereotypes about self-help books.
While aggressively overpromising the results without any effort, the book gives the reader tools to push the blame for one's own shortcomings elsewhere - upbringing, culture, environment, etc. Unscientific ideas about evolutionary biology, animal behaviour, market forces, and medical professionals make this book a prime example of "common sense" being wrong. It is hilariously underresearched and the arguments set in the book is an exemplary collection of biases and goalpost mobility. I can see why these books are so popular, and even imagine how they might be effective - removing the guilt and taking the subject out of the self-destruction orbit is a crucial factor in compulsivity management. I can also see how this book has caused an entire generation of anti-scientific adepts, who now manifest as anti-vaxxers, so it's hurting society more than it's helping.
As for practical examples: the sentence "eat as much of your favorite foods as you want, whenever you want, as often as you want, and be the exact weight you want to be without dieting, special exercise, using willpower, or feeling deprived" appears constantly in the book, but the meanings of "favourite", "foods", "much", "want", "weight", "exercise", "willpower" and "feeling" -- basically all adjectives and nouns are manipulated by the author to arrive at full vegan restrictive diet while maintaining the same catch copy.
