Book Report Guidelines – Good Reads
Name of book: Vampire Mountain
Author: Darren Shan
Pages: 208
Genre: Fiction
Reading Level of book:

Exposition (4-6 sentences)
In Vampire Mountain, Darren is a half-vampire. He is Mr. Crepsley’s assistant. Mr. Crepsley is the Vampire that turned Darren into a half-vampire. Mr.Crepsley tould Darren that they will be leaving the Cirque Du Freak because Mr. Crepsley had to present Darren to the Vampire Council. The Council only meets once every twelve years. They have to go on a journey through the mountains without using any of their Vampire abilities.

Conflict: (4-6 sentences)
On their journey, Darren and Mr. Crepsley found Vampire coffins, and they encountered a Vampaneze Bear. When Darren arrived at Vampire Mountain, he took a tour of the halls. Darren competed in a game. He had to compete against Arra, of the girl vampires. He competed with her because he wanted to earn her respect, and the Princes heard about that and they were surprised. Darren and Arra fenced, and when Darren beat Arra, he earned her respect.

Climax: (4-6 sentences)
When Mr. Crepsley presents Darren to the Vampire Princes, they don’t like that Mr. Crepsley blooded a child. They disapprove because it was against the rules to blood a child. Mr. Crepsley told them not to punish Darren, but to punish him because it was his fault. Since Mr. Crepsley had a history with the Princes, they respected him, and gave him a chance to prove the boy worthy. The Vampire Princes said that Darren has to show that he is worthy of being in the Vampire Ranks.

Resolution: (4-6 sentences)
In order for Darren to show he is worthy, he has to complete the Trails of Death. The Trails of Death is a test. Darren learns that if he passes, he will be accepted into the Vampire Ranks. However, if he fails, or quits, he will be killed. Darren’s adventure continues onto the next book.

Choose a theme in your book and compare to any piece of literature we have read in class. What is similar? What is different? What have you learned about the human experience? (7-10 sentences)

A theme of Vampire Mountain would be friendship. It is similar to The Perks of Being a Wallflower. In The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Charlie makes two friends who he thought were funny, and he connected to. In Vampire Mountain, Darren found two friends as well. They were Vampires who were much older than him, and he used their advice to help him understand the ways of a Vampire. Similarly, Charlie received advice from his older friends about his life and being weird. Additionally, these two books are similar in that Charlie is a teenager going through hard times, and Darren is a young kid trying to understand the world. In Perks of Being a Wallflower, Charlie is lonely and sensitive, but in Vampire Mountain, Darren is tough, and confident. In the end, Charlie makes friends and is no longer alone, but Darren has to take a bigger risk and be alone. Both books teach that no matter where you come from, you’ll always be similar to someone.

I was not ready for the time jump in this one. Six years have passed since the third book.
This book was good, do not get me wrong, but it was a filler book. There wasn't anything really happening. It was tense at some points and the ending was suspenseful but as a whole this book was very monotoned in action.

Vampire Mountain is a lighting fast read. Since I have a great love for wolves, I enjoyed them accompanying Darren during his adventures in the beginning of the book. Once Darren and company arrive at Vampire Mountain, we are introduced to many different vampires and learn about their traditions. But even more interesting than any vampire story is the story of Harkat Mulds ("Lefty" of the Little People).

It's quite enjoying reading about vampires who are stubborn and wild, and not so broodingly handsome.

This book follows the journey to the Vampire Mountain where Mr Crepsley shall present his case to the vampire princes for wrongly blooding a child.

This was enjoyable, but there is much less action in this one than the previous books, though the ending of this suggests a lot is about to happen in the next book. Darren's fight on the bar with Arra was fun, and I'm glad he's proving to be a strong character.

I find it unfair that Darren is caught up in Mr. Crepsleys wrong doings. It should not be for Darren to have to perform in a trial as punishment for Larten.

There are twelve books in the Cirque du Freak series by Darren Shan and I read my way through all of them in about three weeks as a child! I absolutely loved them and was totally immersed in the world created by Darren Shan from the get go. October is just the perfect time to re-read them all! Especially when I have access to all the audio books.

This series is everything I remember. Creepy, full of gore and suspense, leaving you wanting more! All the characters are incredibly unique and developed. The story as a whole is different from comparison novels and you can tell with each book that there is much more of a story to come. Shan has written the books whilst planning ahead. Small details that suggest further meaning crop up later in the series and it is sheer genius and talent.

There is gore, which I enjoyed immensely. Also, some humour thrown in so it wasn't completely gross and disgusting all the time. It was a nice way to break things up so it didn't feel dark and bleak every step of the way. I was lucky enough to meet the author at Edinburgh Book Festival in 2019 and every sentence on every page of these books oozes his personality, humour and fantastic mind! You are completely immersed into the world of Darren Shan, Mr Crepsley and the Cirque Du Freak with just a few sentences.

I think this series will forever be a favourite of mine! Especially during the spooky season!

Vampire Mountain
Author: Darren Shan

"Students never appreciate their teachers while they are learning. It is only later, when they know more of the world, that they understand how indebted they are to those who instructed them. Good teachers expect no praise or love from the young. They wait for it, and in time, it comes."

Darren and Mr. Crepsley travel to Vampire Mountain to attend a vampire council where all the important vampires and vampire princes come together.

The journey to Vampire Mountain is incredibly dangerous. Together with another member of the cirque they leave to start their dangerous journey.

Vampire Mountain is a very historical place where much can be learned about the history of the vampire world. Darren is very impressed by all the mystery he is exposed to in a very short time.

The vampire council disagrees with Mr. Crepsley's choice to turn Darren into a half-vampire at a very young age.

They come to the dangerous conclusion that Darren must participate in the Trails of Association. Normally this is standard procedure for all new adult vampires, but never before has a child been put through this life-threatening ordeal....

Will Darren be able to prove himself to the vampire council?

This part focuses on the history of the vampire world. Vampire Mountain is incredibly well described, allowing you to really imagine the world in which Darren finds himself.

The vampire council reminded me a bit of the Volturi from Twilight, but much more extensive and less mysterious, because the author reveals more about their way of life and thinking.

Darren's Trails of Association gave me a bit of the vibe of The Triwizard Tournament, but for vampires.

I thought it was really cool to finally read a novel that gives you a glimpse into the minds of vampires without being exposed to the well-known cliches.
