Not my favorite book in the series so far, which isn't to say that the writing is bad or anything - the series is consistently good. If the series was a TV show, this might be considered the "filler" episode. I still liked the story quite a bit, but I'm more excited for the next one!

You have been warned. I know, I was pretty devastated too...

It's not a bad book. Darren has settled into vampire life somewhat well but upon summons by the Vampire Council, both he and Mr. Crepsley have to trek to Vampire Mountain to plead their case.

Throughout the book, we are given snitches and tidbits of what vampire society is like - n  harsh, cruel and noble.n The author has no qualms about depicting gruesome details.

Characters die, often painfully and without a 'reason.' I keep expecting (as seen with other middle school books) for the character's death to further plot or provide character development. Here, the characters die because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Chillingly real.

I was a bit annoyed by the ending - we spend all this time building and nothing is played out. ALSO there's no Cirque du Freak. I picked up this series cause I adored all the cirque characters but we don't see any of them. Highly disappointing.

Entiendo por qué juntaron los libros, porque este es en realidad la introducción literal a los ritos, o al menos eso supongo.

Han pasado 6 años desde la transformación a asistente de vampiro de Darren, ya se acostumbró a su vida aunque no es fácil envejecer 1 año de cada 5. Cuando una reunión de vampiros se acerca irá con Mr. Crepsley a la montaña de los vampiros.

El libro es 80% el viaje hacia la montaña de los vampiros, 15% de que nos muestra cómo es por dentro, las costumbres y nuevos personajes y un 5% de lo que podría ser la historia en estas tres entregas.

Es cierto que aún así la historia es divertida y se pasa volando, tanto porque suelen ocurrir cosas de forma continua como por la misma narración de Darren. Su voz y su forma de enfrentarse a lo que va sucediendo es divertida y hace que el libro tenga un tono más ligero, aunque sea una historia oscura.

No hay mucho más que decir que quedé con ganas de leer el siguiente, Darren siempre tan impulsivo con sus decisiones.

Eight years later - only about two in vampire years - and we get to see more of the vampires. The Cirque du Freak will be left for quite some while, as Crepsley decided it is time to let Darren meet the Vampire Generals and Princes.

I couldn’t stop this time either, you barely notice time, when reading this.

I loved it, especially the part with the dear wolves - the cousins.
I really hope we will see them again.

Now Darren and Crepsley are on their journey to Vampire Mountain with Harkat - a little person - and at some point Gavner, they get to know that a vampire was killed and vampaneze were on their path, even though they usually avoid the Mountain. Besides that Harkat got a message - some kind of Leader for the vampaneze will rise and will mean demise for the vampires who could only be saved by the Blood Stone. A relict that holds the blood of vampires, connects them in some way.
Meanwhile, Darren gets to meet old friends of Gavner and Crepsley and gets to know more about vampires, their history and principles - which of course is very interesting for the reader. I loved to get to know more about the species, their morals and ways of life.

Darren got to show, again, how strong he is, which kind of already tells us that Darren really has potential and that there will be something great that he will do at some point, proving to be very powerful. At least that's my guess from the experience of reading such things in the past.
I am not complaining though, I would love for Darren to be very powerful indeed.

At the end of the book we get to know that Crepsley really turned Darren basically out of boredom or the lack of doing something better which leads to Darren having to master some trials that would mean death, if he can't do it. Refusing would mean shame and while he could live with it, he doesn't want Crepsley to be ashamed. And so we get "Trials of Death".

Besides that here we get some proof that this is a product of its time... a woman vampire being rare because being a vampire means being infertile, which would usually get this -0,25 at least. Yes it is a product of its time but that doesn’t mean I have to like it or well that I shouldn't minus some points for it. (It being so little points is gracious so I won't feel bad.)

I also love that Crepsley and Darren's relationship got better and closer, they really remind me, in some way, of father and son.
Although, doing something that could kill you just to safe the face of someone... might not exactly be healthy and/or good.

Still, I am excited for the next book and enjoyed this read a lot.

In questo quarto volume, Darren e Mr. Crepsley affrontano il viaggio verso la Montagna dei Vampiri: ogni dodici anni i vampiri si riuniscono in consiglio, un modo per ritrovare vecchi amici o rivali, per scoprire le novità, e per presentare agli altri i nuovi membri, come Darren.
Una volta arrivati, Mr. Crepsley e Darren scopriranno il loro destino, in quanto trasformare i bambini è proibito da secoli.

Devo ammettere che non molto accade in questo libro: oltre al viaggio e ai pericoli affrontati, esploriamo assieme a Darren la Montagna e facciamo lo conoscenza di molti vampiri. La storia non progredisce davvero fino al finale, che fa presagire il quinto libro come piuttosto denso di avventura e pericoli.
Anche se non avventuroso come gli altri, ho comunque apprezzato questo volume per altri motivi: in primis il fatto che si arricchisce la nostra conoscenza della cultura vampiresca, e poi perché conosciamo alcuni vampiri, come Arra (in copertina, ma quanto è figa?) e Seba, che io personalmente ho adorato.

Quindi, i personaggi come colonna portante di questo libro. Da chi cominciare?
Ovviamente Darren e Mr. Crepsley li conosciamo bene, e in questo libro si comincia davvero a intravedere un legame più forte. Si è passati dall'odio di Darren verso il vampiro a un rispetto reciproco, dopo anni di convivenza e di spazi condivisi. Anzi, personalmente penso ci sia quasi il principio del legame padre-figlio che nel fandom è uno dei punti di accordo.
E poi rispunta Gavner. Vi giuro che non vedevo l'ora di ritrovarlo (li vedete gli occhi a cuoricino?): in questo libro scopriamo qualcosina in più su di lui, ma da quanto ne so dovrò leggere i prequel per conoscerlo meglio. Nel mentre, mi accontento.
Ma, come ho detto, in questo volume compaiono nuovi vampiri: Arra è una delle pochissime vampire in circolazione. Su un centinaio di vampiro, Darren vede solo due o tre donne. Un po' irrealistico, secondo me, soprattutto per quanto riguarda ciò che viene detto a ragione di ciò. Comunque, Arra è una dei migliori Generali, praticamente imbattuta. Lei e Darren hanno un incontro piuttosto burrascoso, alla maniera dei vampiri, e piuttosto interessante per quanto riguarda i metodi di combattimento vampireschi.
Altro personaggio importante che personalmente ho odiato è Kurda. Io comprendo benissimo la cultura dei vampiri in questo libro, legata all'onore e alla forza, e non trovo Kurda adatto a farne parte né a essere uno dei Principi. Molti vampiri sono d'accordo con me, e sinceramente, a causa dei suoi legami con i Vampaneze, mi aspetto che muoia presto. E non sto più nella pelle.
Un personaggio adorato dai fan e che non vedevo l'ora di incontrare è Seba, il mentore di Mr. Crepsley. Pur avendo una presenza di poche pagine, ammetto che è diventato uno dei miei preferiti. Anche qui, dovrò aspettare i prequel per conoscerlo meglio. Mi rassicura il fatto che quei libri siano già sulla mensola ad aspettarmi.
Ultimi personaggi chiave sono i principi: Paris, Mika e Arrow. Ce n'è un quarto, Vancha, che però in questo libro non compare. Non so ancora bene cosa pensare di loro, soprattutto a causa della decisione che hanno preso in merito a Darren. Mi riservo i miei pensieri per i prossimi volumi.
C'è un ultimo personaggio che credo risulterà importante, e che però non è un vampiro: Harkat Mulds, membro del Piccolo Popolo e quindi creatura di Mr. Tiny. Sembra abbastanza innocuo per quanto riguarda Darren, ma non so per gli altri. Anche qui, si vedrà.

C'è un argomento interessante che mi ha incuriosito, oltre ovviamente a tutta la cultura vampiresca: il problema della lingua. Anche Darren Shan, l'autore, ha fatto un post a riguardo su Facebook proprio in questi giorni per via dei dubbi dei fan. In effetti, non sappiamo bene dove si trovi la Montagna dei Vampiri, se non che è in un luogo sperduto lontano dalla civiltà. E i vampiri provengono da tutto il mondo. Quindi devono per forza parlare una lingua comune se voglio comunicare tra loro. Ma quale? Dubito sia l'inglese, una lingua troppo recentemente adibita a lingua globale. Prima c'era il francese, ma io opto, forse troppo elitariamente, per il latino.
Non sappiamo quando i vampiri siano stati creati, ma storicamente parlando mi sembrava la scelta più ovvia.

Insomma, un libro particolare. Sicuramente non pieno di azione come gli altri libri, ma comunque accattivante e ben scritto, Vampire Mountain si conclude preannunciando guai. Devo assolutamente leggere il prossimo volume.

I have to say, I didn't enjoy this book as much as i hoped to. I thought it was kind of boring. Like, at some points it could be really interesting but other parts just kind of fell flat. I also think that the first half was a lot better than the second.
In this book a lot of the adults really bugged me. I feel like they thought that just because Darren Was a kid, that meant he wasn't strong or smart. Like, he can do a lot more than what these people give him credit for. I mean, he did make it all the way to Vampire Mountain without getting seriously injured.
In the real world i think grown-ups do that a lot. I think sometimes they do that because they don't want to admit that they are wrong! They think that they are better or don't think that a kid can prove them wrong.
It's like the whole this with Arra. When Darren almost beat her on the bars, she got upset. It was like she didn't realize that it was just for fun and that Darren wasn't purposly trying to make her upset. But. at least she kind of opened up and started being at least civil towards Darren.

اون مبارزه‌ی دارن با آرا به‌نظرم خیلی غیرواقعی بود. دارن اونقدرا تمرین خاصی نداشت ولی تا حد زیادی پابه‌پای آرا که به گفته‌ی خودشون روزی چهار-پنج تا شبح رو ناکار می‌کنه جنگید. :/ از این کار نویسنده‌ها بدم میاد. خب اگه تمرین داشته یه جوری بهمون بگو تمرین می‌کرده هرروز این شش سال و قبول، اگه نداشته هم دیگه باید زودتر از اینا از پا درمیومد. همینجوری که یهو آدم متخصص یه چیزی نمیشه، هرچقدرم استعداد داشته باشه.

ولی این جلد خوش گذشت. کنجکاویم داره خیلی بیش‌تر میشه.

This book is way darker than the other ones. We're introduced to a whole new aspect of the vampire world and how the vampire politics works. I absolutely loved the dark tone in this book and I can't wait to read the next 8 books asdjsdgfsdjgjdsfs!

Another enjoyable read, a few loose ends unanswered for but hopefully they will have answers in the next few books.

No es que sea malo. Es que simplemente parece el inicio del libro y falta toda la trama. Justo cuando va a iniciar se termina el libro y yo así de ya se termino??
