consistently solid series. wasnt my favorite out of the first three but I really liked the villain and how it introduced some new concepts to vampire lore.
The third installment in the Darren Shan saga gets 3 stars, unlike the scores the previous ones got (2 stars) because the saga stepped up its game now (FINALLY)
This one was written better (slightly), not as predictable, and all around more interesting. I'm pleased.
I think this book was NEEDED for story progression (i.e. Tells us more about the Vampaneze which are very much the enemies of the Vampires in the series), but I can't help but admit that this wasn't my favorite just because some parts dragged and the tone was just slightly different to the first two. This isn't to say that I didn't like it. I actually did enjoy it quite a bit, and I really am enjoying seeing how Darren is growing into his being a half-Vampire a year and a half after he was turned. But, like I said, not my favorite. I do want to continue the series though (but will alas have to wait because I'm back at school and left them at home).
De eerste helft van dit boek was erg traag en de tweede helft was te voorspelbaar om écht spannend te zijn. Ook miste ik de unieke sfeer van Cirque du Freak.
Darren and Evra the Snakeboy join Mr. Crepsley (Darren's guardian/vampire sire) as he tries to suss out who is going on a murder-spree in town. We are introduced to the Vampaneze - semi-evil vampires (they are only semi-evil based on their philosophy on killing humans).
Note series is geared towards boys - action, adventure, blood, guts and gore. Which, I found equally enjoyable when I was a middle school girl first reading this series. However, during my reread, I noticed that it feels like the author wanted to expand the audience by adding in a bit a spice in the form of a love-interest (Debbie).
This quickly becomes a painfully shoe-horned lackluster romance thrown in for the heck of it. After two books of absolutely no love-interest, we finally see Darren Shan take an interest in girls as he meets and befriends Debbie.
I remember my first time reading this (about 10 years ago) and literally looking away from the book, going, is that it? I wasn't expecting some grand romantic arch...but I wanted a little something other than that this cardboard cutout.
However, despite the romance, the plot of the book shines through. I enjoyed this book...though for being part of the Cirque du Freak, there weren't many pages given to the people at the circus.
Alright, this is me finished with this series. I liked the parts where they were at the freak show well enough, but this book takes the characters out of that setting to chase a murderer. It’s all too dull and has a lot of drawn out scenes where nothing happens and conversations where nothing is said.
Still enjoying the series. The books have a youthful point of view. The story is interesting and I will continue the series. Definitely different than the movie. (normally books are very different)
Krvavé chodby jsem oproti ostatním dílům tolik nemusela ani v knižní podobě, tudíž zasloužený lepší průměr. Ale manga byla skvělá. Dokonce tam Debbie vypadala i k světu, a to ji nemám ráda. Narozdíl od Murlougha... kterého jsem si představovala... hezčího. Ale Evra :33
Didn't enjoy it as much as The Vampire's Assistant but as a hole, it was still enjoyable to read. Darren along with Evra and Mr Crepsley head to the city as a killer is let loose.
