Well... I don't know why many people think about asperger syndrome as a disease. Really, I think that people with asperger are the normal ones in comparison with the majority. But... for most of the people I'm an extravagant and eccentric weirdo, with a peculiar sense of humor, and very logical, so maybe my opinion is not representative, or maybe I share some of the characteristics and that's the reason

This is a great book and I recommend it for anyone to read. It is different from your usual non-fiction books. He specifically does not fill the book with facts but writes it more like a biography. It more about "this is what it is like living with autism spectrum disorder and here's how you can make things easier for us". He doesn't claim to know it all and frequently reminds you that he is only 13 so has a lot more to learn but he writes it so well.
It is quite humourous too, with a list of idioms at the back. I liked the final note where he explained that his hormones hit halfway through writing the book and how it made things interesting.
There is further reading at the back but unfortunately, because of the age of the book, the websites are out of date.

I do wonder how things have changed for him, given that he was 13 in 2003.

Good book for me to read, as a parent of an Aspergers child. But a great book for my son to read, because this book is written by a 13 year old for other Aspergers kids struggling through adolescence.

Written by then-13-year old Luke Jackson with a diagnosis of Asperger Syndrome diagnosis, this is less of a narrative than a conversational chapter-by-chapter guide and discussion to various topics that may be of interest to a young teen. The tone does make it an easy read with just enough information interspersed with descriptions of how the author experiences them.

However, this same writing style does make it difficult as a neurotypical adult reader to remain engaged -- constant reminders of "I am only thirteen!" becomes trite after the first few chapters. Accordingly, the juvenile audience is what he is aiming for which I suppose is fitting. For anyone well-versed in autism literature, this book is rather light on content. The majority of the links included in the back are no longer functional, and includes very little discussion of modern, evidence-based therapy techniques available.

That said, it can be useful as a quick and dirty introduction manual for kids, caregivers, and educators on a wide range of topics from sensory perception to friendships. Bully has also been given its own chapter, which is apt due to the prevalence particularly in school populations.

A kind of memoir/self help book written by 13 year old Luke Jackson about his experience with autism (Asperger's syndrome is an outdated term now), including how to navigate friendships, relationships and interests as an adolescent with autism (his being computers and taekwando).

I didn't enjoy this too much because a lot of the information is outdated (it was written in 2002 after all) and a lot of this information didn't really 'zen' with me as it's obviously written for adolescents, and the autistic experience for boys or those who were assigned male at birth (and who were raised as male) can be quite different to girls or those who were assigned female at birth (and who were raised as female).

I LOVED this book. I gave it to my son to read too. He loved it as well. In it, Jackson reveals what it is like to be a 13 yr old boy w/Asperger Syndrome. An endearing boy, he writes as though he's talking to you directly, which makes it a fast read. I highly recommend this for parents, teachers and teens who have AS.

My sons's speech teacher sent this book home for me to read. She also wanted our son to read the dating part of the book. He's 17. The author is from England. His writing and words can be quite unfamiliar to an asperger person. When my son and I read the dating part, I edited some of it so he could understand more what the author meant. It did my heart good to see that a young man with aspergers accomplished writing a book like this one. There were some reminders for me to help my son and I thought it was worth the read.

Author Luke Jackson is a 13-year-old British boy with Asperger Syndrome. He has written this book in order to help AS kids understand themselves, and help parents and caregivers understand their charges. As such, it is an invaluable resource. Luke writes with clarity and humor, explaining from the inside of an AS mind why these kids do what they do, and validating their feelings and struggles. Except for some British slang and idioms, any of my AS clients would find his work understandable and relatable. Also helpful is a list of resources at the back of the book for more information on AS, ADHD and Autism.

Looked intriguing, written from the firsthand perspective. Foreward by Tony Atwood. Can't wait to get to this.

A really important book (especially because it was written by a kid on the Autism Spectrum). Written for parents and kids alike whose lives are impacted by Aspergers, now called Autism Level 1 or High Functioning Autism. I didn't finish it as my teen's experience with Autism is so different than the author's.
