This one starts off just where we left off last time where the vampaneze gave them a head start to run off we were a bit confused to why this was though because wouldn't they're just wanted to kill them that's what I was thinking anyway but we find out later in the book it's because the vampaneze can't kill them only the vampaneze prince can kill the vampire prince because Mr tiny had said if the vampaneze prince wasn't the one to kill them that the vampires would win the battle or the war whatever you want to call it so they go back to where they were living unbeknown to them the vampaneze had one more trick up their sleeve so Steve who we met in the last book who was Darren's best friend we find out that he is also a vampaneze so when they get back to the shelter with Steve with them a little bit later cops turn up thinking they had kidnapped him and killed all the people who had been going missing they decide to jump down from where they are and run off leaving Steve there but when Mr Crepsley jump down he ended up hurting his leg the other vampire prince who was with them decided to go and run off but he did have the conversation with the other people before he did this but Darren wouldn't go without Mr Crepsley and neither would the little person so they ended up going to jail will they get out of jail though for you just have to read the book yourself to find out

For some reason this manga version is linked to the normal paperback version on here, this is a review of the manga.
It was very quick, I do find it lacking a bit, especially considering how much the book version absolutely shocked and surprised me. Obviously I knew what was coming, but even so, I didn't find it as impactful in here. I've said it in previous volumes and I'll say it again - read the proper books first before you read the manga. This is just like an added bonus for fans of the series, but I wouldn't suggest this as your first readthrough, it just doesn't have the same ooomph as the written book.
That being said, it is a quick and digestible way of rereading the story, to get back into that world and let the snippets in here remind your brain of the richness of the book.

Much of this was really quite exciting and action packed, although I still think that these books would be better combining at least two books into one so that they aren't these really short snippets, ultimately always ending on a cliffhanger. Either way, we start right where we left off in the previous book - always a key tell that they should really be a single entity -with Darren still reeling from a betrayal. Things are only going to get worse for our ragtag group of heroes as before long the police turn up, suspecting them of being the killers who have been plaguing the city.

I enjoyed this refreshing bout of the real world coming face to face with things beyond their ability to understand or control. Their guilt is all but assured when the police find the body of a dead Vampet in the house, tortured for information. The pace really picks up here and I liked how various characters are played with. The ending took a bit of a dismal turn and I particularly did not enjoy the make believe scene where you are assured that all's well that end's well, only to have Darren say, 'I wish that's what happened'. That was a cheap tactic and more than a little annoying.

Either way, this is an action packed adventure. There is definite violence and brutality here even if it isn't described in vivid detail. I'd say it's a children's book, but one that I'd likely recommend to those twelve and above.

The book starts with Darren and his friends quickly leaving the underground passages to escape the Vampaneze and vampets. With them are two hostages, Steve Leopard (who reveals himself to be a half-vampaneze) and a vampet. Debbie has been taken hostage by R.V., Vancha tortures the vampet back at their base and finds out that only the Vampaneze Lord can kill the three hunters. Unfortunately, Steve had arranged for the police to find out about them and soon they are surrounded by the police and army. They escape by jumping through the window, while Vancha escapes with the chief of police; the rest are captured and imprisoned. Eventually a vampet called Morgan helps Darren escape, claiming that he is proud to serve the creatures of the night. Darren then helps Harkat escape, a task which was aided by the guards' fear of Harkat (they were under the impression that he had a rare and deadly disease). The two together are able to free Larten Crepsley. They quickly go outside, unnoticed by the guards who are occupied by Steve's having killed a nurse and two other people. Mr. Crepsley, Darren and Harkat descend into the tunnels, where they meet up with Vancha. They arm themselves with weapons carelessly discarded by the vampaneze. They seek out Steve, who calls the rest of the vampaneze. There is a battle between the two sides, and soon they face whom they believe is the Vampaneze Lord. The suspected Vampaneze Lord says that he and Mr. Crepsley must fight one another alone. Crepsley kills the Vampaneze Lord, but Steve jumps onto his back and causes him to fall over the side, where he is hanging over the flaming stakes with Steve. Since he believes the Vampaneze lord is dead, he agrees to kill himself and stop holding on to Steve in exchange for a free passage for the rest. After he is dead and everyone has safely departed, Steve reveals himself to Darren as the Vampaneze Lord: the one who Darren must destroy for the sake of the world.

I think this may be the book I love the most in the series so far, but also the one I hate the most. I won't say who but someone dies and I was devastated. Can't believe he did that! He certainly doesn't mind killing off his characters, but why is it always the ones I like the most?

Now I've dropped that bombshell, I will explain, the death doesn't happen until right near the end, but I knew it was coming for a couple of chapters. Up to that point this book was so exciting and well written, I was utterly absorbed, swept up and chucked around by it. I didn't want it to end.

The big war is coming and Crepsley, Shan and March are back on the trail of the Vampaneze prince, accompanied of course by Harket. I haven't said it before, but I really like Harket and with every book he develops more and grows so much. He may be described as quite ugly, but you can't help but want to hug him. He's a bit like the 'Dobby' of this world!

There are more old faces turning up and some are not going to give up easily. Big battles, cunning plots and devious manoeuvres , this book will have you gripping the pages so hard and desperate for more. If only that ending hadn't have gone like that!

I need to finish this series, I can't get enough. :D

After a big disaster, Darren learned something after a death of someone. He felt sad, and let me also felt sad, and that is how it is. I think I will rest a while then continue to the next book because of the emotions they had mad.

3.5/5 (rounded up to 4)

The beginning was a bit boring but I liked the ending, excited to see how this series will end.
