“Confidence has brought them out into the light, but they seem to have forgotten - light's no good for creatures of the night.”
Despite a lot of the disagreeing reviews, this was an EXCELLENT installment in the series. Darren returns to his hometown prompting the return of some characters from the first book in the series. Through a mirage of events and deaths, Darren is confronted with an unspeakable horror and surprise at the end of the book.
Despite a lot of people's claims that the author shouldn't have ended on that note, I believe the author made the right choice. Throughout the last couple of books, we've known that Steve Leopard was crazy af but it's been tough to see the evil in his character...until now.
Do you trust your friends? Well Darren docent after Steve his best friend try's to kill him! Evanna is a witch that can see the future and is warning him that he is to become an evil monster that will destroy the earth! Darren is set of to find a loop hole. Sometimes I feel like a monster ready to destroy the earth, but that's just me. Darren has come across Steve and is trying to rule the world and once again Darren is stuck in the middle.
Into the final stages of the Saga and this book does not disappoint. It is a fast-paced read and I happily finished this and book 12 on the same day this time around. This book and book 12 stitch together rather seamlessly and I enjoyed the battles and how everything seems to come back around full circle.
The eleventh book in the series continues to be fascinating, a dark road leading to an exciting (I hope anyway) finish.
In love with Darren and his supporting characters, it's easy to hate the evil Vampinese Lord, although HIS personal sidekicks seem to be showing more a multi-layered conscience. There's two sad deaths that surprised me in this one, all grim and brutal to match the series and how things are going.
There is a certain character who is still deeply missed and, if the predictions come true about Darren's eventual fate if he does survive, I can't help but think that if the friend had survived to continue to mentor, that Darren would never have faced that dark future.
Vancha is back, thankfully, and as awesome as always. There is a sad revelation about his future. I was kind of hoping for something with him and the human Alice, but I guess that's not eventual. She continues to impress as a worthy human. Debbie and Darren - well, not sure how that will work out now that Darren has shown her a darker face. Harrat is always great to behold as a friend.
We get to revisit the Cirque Du Freak a lot, which is nice, again coming home.
Pacing is as always fierce, dealing out the right moments of breathing space to keep it from seeing harried. Shan writes action scenes expertly, always delivering surprise twists and turnouts.
As Darren is changing, it's a nice ironic twist that he has been placed in the hometown where he was born and his vampire journey initially began.
Among the top three of the series (the other two being the second and eighth book)
To think that Darren has a nephew. I want to say he has two but because it seems that the nephew lives with Annie but then Darius was with Steve.
I definitely was not expecting the ending of Darren finding out though that Darius was his Nephew. & to find out that Steve blooded humans too. He’s a half-Vampaneze. I’m not ready for what’s to come in the final book but I must admit I’m also excited to find out as well..
I read the previous book in this series 9 years ago, and the reason why I didn’t finish the last two books back then is because the last few books I read really did not amaze me in the slightest. I don’t remember much of their stories, just that they were either dragging on too long or that the twists were very predictable.
And I’m not surprised that I feel the same way about book #11 now, but I’m determined now to finish this series and not have another 9 year hiatus before I start the last part. Maybe the ending will surprise me, who knows.
Such action this book has. Here we get to see more of Darren's hometown, sister and it evolves more around families. The Vampaneze Lord is truly cruel, a key character is being killed and we get to find a missing piece of the story, not to mention that big twist at the end that made my jaw drop. Plus, we find out about Darren's destiny. No matter of his choice, a bad outcome lies around the corner.
I can't wait to see what's going to happen in the last book! 4 stars for this one.
