Oof, I very rudely did NOT remember that Mr. Tall dies and that was very upsetting and unsadly. I remembered the whole time that Shancus dies so that didn't affect me half as much as it should be, though I remembered Ezra being more rageful.

Now, if memory serves me, onto the best one?

After his bizarre trip with Harkat into the land of the Lake of Souls, Darren returns to the Cirque du Freak--a place with such history for him--but without his mentor, Mr. Crepsley, he travels around with the circus, headed by Mr. Tiny. When the Cirque arrives in his old hometown, he wishes for reunion with those who think he's dead, but the possibility of leading the vampaneze to his loved ones makes this too risky. But there is one reunion he won't be able to avoid: a clash between him and his childhood friend Steve, who is now Lord of the Vampaneze. Will the half-vampire prince Darren be able to defeat him and save the vampire clan?

The book was a little disjointed, and a little too constructed to build to the final confrontation, but what I did like about it was seeing the dark side of our hero. He's really built up some violence and hate and ability to do some terrible things, which is appropriate considering, well, he's a vampire. There's still the same strange distance between the first-person narration and the connection to the character, though; it made it difficult throughout for me to get into this series.

The most intense book in the series yet. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time and even when I thought things couldn't get worse, they undoubtedly did. We had a lot of death occur with these pages and our story is climbing and climbing to it's epic conclusion. This author has a knack for throwing kinks in the road that you would never in a million years guess. I was shocked on every page. I have no idea where the last book is going to end up but after this one, I don't know if my heart will be able to take it.

Warning! The summary for this book contains spoilers for those who have not read its prior counterparts. In other words, there are no spoilers for this particular book, just the ones before it. The review itself is, for the most part, spoiler free, however.

About the Book:

Darren returns to his home town, ready for the ultimate showdown with Steve Leonard, the Vampaneze Lord. Meanwhile, Darren is worrying about the prediction Evanna told him. In The Lake of Souls, Darren and Harkat find out that the world they traveled to was actually the Earth's future, created by the Lord of the Shadows. The catch is that the Lord of the Shadows will be one of two people: Steve Leonard or Darren Shan. In other words, if Steve is killed, Darren is the one destined to become the evil tyrant and send the world into chaos.

Review:
This series just keeps getting better and better. I did not want to put it down. It was interesting to see how Darren dealt with coming face to face with his human life and how he dealt with it. Of course, there is also plenty of action between Steve and Darren, along with the lead ups to their encounters.

Darren also runs into Debbie and Alice once more, and they have succeeded in putting together a human army to battle the vampets. Although it is nice to see Debbie doing something useful, I personally still cannot stand her. She just seems to cling to Darren too much.

Overall though I think the most thrilling aspects Shan brought to this piece was all the shocking twists and torments. It was quite shocking to see what sort of murders and violence went on in this book. I can easily think of three major points that occured and left me thinking, "I can't believe that just happened!" Lord of the Shadows was a fabulous read, and I don't think you will be disappointed.

“I'd become a savage animal set on taking a young boy’s life.”

Will you take his life? The choice is yours. He is out to kill and destroy the vampire clan. You know he is evil inside, but he is just a little kid. You raise your knife up to his throat, this is it. You've made your decision. You've nicked the kid’s neck with the sharp blade. Soon he'll be drowning in his own blood, but for right now it is trickling down his neck and chest. You're out of control, you can't stop yourself. Then you bring the knife closer, almost there.
Darren Shan is back with debatably my favorite book in the Cirque Du Freak Series. In Cirque Du Freak: Lord of the Shadows, Darren and the Cirque visit his hometown. Many things have changed, but some have stayed the same. The memories of his family overwhelm him as he walks the streets. He can't stop thinking about how his sister is all grown up, and now she has a kid! As the book unravels, plot twists are sure to catch readers off guard and leave them begging for more.
I can't say anything remotely bad about this book. There are three main points I want to make for this book. The first point is that the idea of Darren visiting his hometown was genius. Two, the story itself was very interesting, something Shan has never brought to the table before. Lastly, the plot twists were so unexpected I couldn't believe it. It was so intense, when the story ended, I threw the book across the room because I couldn't believe it.
First, the idea behind the book. The main reason this book is interesting is because of the setting. It was intriguing to join Darren as he visits the town of his childhood. Everything was different in some way, and it was a great way to tie the plot together. I don't want to spoil it, but if you want to see the significance of this setting, read the book.
Second, the story itself. This was a very well rounded book. Unlike other books I've read, some even in this series, the proportionality of action and calm is perfect. It is rare to see a story which hypes you up for the action without being boring. Also, this book had its fair share of comedy. For example, when Darren was sluggishly trotting on the side of the road, he kept wondering why no one would help him. A few minutes later he realizes that everyone thinks he is drunk!
Lastly, the plot twists. The plot twists are so unexpected in this story! Just when you think that the book couldn't get any wilder, AN EXTREME TWIST HAPPENS, especially when you least expect it. I’m not going to give any examples because that would ruin the book.
Overall, I give this book a total of 4 ½ stars, higher than my rating for any other Cirque Du Freak book! In the case of goodreads, five stars! Well that's it for this review, be sure to read it at your local library today!

This is the 11th instalment in the Darren Shan saga and sees the return of Darren and Harkat from the other world and the Lake of Souls with the knowledge of Harkat’s true identity. It was good to see the return of the Cirque du Freak, Annie Shan and Darren’s childhood friend Tommy, and the lead up to the inevitable final showdown between Darren and Steve but it’s not as good as the earlier books in the series in my opinion. 4 star read for me overall ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ looking forward to seeing how this series ends!

Second to last book in the series and is a builder. This is exactly what you would expect to prepare for the conclusion. However, it was paced enough to keep you reading and is forcing me to read the last book now and not after a few more. We are full circle in a lot of ways with this book, but I am very interested in how the author will conclude it. This series is still on my recommended list, which is hard after 11 books. We will see how I feel at the conclusion of book 12.
