THIS BOOK DOES NOT leave you satisfied with the ending
Seriously, I've slogged through TWELVE books of this series...For this? Shan kills off so many characters, sends us through rabbit hole after rabbit hole.... and this is all we get?
I want to throw something.
I mean, I can kind of see why that had to happen. This book is for middle schoolers and Shan pretty much wrote himself into a corner...either every character he wrote had to die or he's have to do something pretty drastic.
Yet, I still feel cheated. And I don't care for the way Darren manages to save everything in the end. Everything is too perfectly wrapped up. Ugh.
Be prepared for the spoiler rant:
Darren goes back in time to scare his younger self away from the adventure/ events that led to his fate. He ends up creating a new timeline in which all of the events still happen but his friends are no longer the ones doing them.
Sure, the people he knows are all fine but what about the others created by his decision?
And, after twelve books, the ending is essentially a big screw you to the readers. None of the events happened anymore and Darren is just a kid at the end of the twelfth book (since now he never went on the adventure).
i would loved to say it was a good series, but in the end i think i spent twelve books reading about nothing. all my favourite characters died. one by one. The plot was so obvious. i wanted something surprising. to tell the truth i was glad Darren died at the end. i was almost crying when i read about Larten and Mr. Tall alive again. but to sum it all - this series was a complete waste of my time. i could easily live without these books. the only light at the end of the tunnel for me was Mr. Crepsley. i will remember him. but the others? not so much.
This whole story line has such a clever ending!! As unhappy as I was at first with the ending, by the last few words I realised how good this was and how all the sadness I felt before was now soothed and I felt happy and at peace.
I'm really torn about this book for a couple of reasons! Its very meta. It uses time travel shenanigans to 'fix' the time line to defeat Tiny and that is what bothers me about it. I also wish that Tiny was a more of a Big Bad than he seems throughout the series. It all lead up to the defeating the Vampaneze Lord, and that ends up being the middle of the book!
Darren living in the Lake of Souls was truly haunting for me.
But how Darren and Evanna end up tricking Tiny is satisfying but also not? If Darren goes to Paradise to reunite with his friends, will they even really KNOW him since he changed the timeline and he doesn't become a vampire anymore?
Y no me dejó mal, me gustó.
Así que sólo le quité una estrella por el final y mi falta de respuestas, del resto, para mí se llevaría las 5 completas.
P.D.: Me sentí como una tonta, porque el título del libro es tremendo spoiler... Nunca confié en ti Mr. Tiny.
Amazing end to an amazing series. Always will be a childhood favourite. I love how original the storyline is, how short the books are, how many plot twists and realistic characters there are. I also love the time jumps between books, and all of the background that's explained, and the development. I think it just all went together so perfectly, might be a case of the nostalgia for me, but I think this series can do no wrong. Shan's writing has always just captured me completely.
The ending to this was so good, we get to see more into Evanna's mind, and also get some closure!
Phew, what a series, though! Fast-paced, full of action and adventure, destinies and terror. Not to mention the great and terrific characters, the personalities and the drama.
Overall I would give the whole series 4 stars for its greatness.
The book I disliked the most was book 2: The Vampire's Assistant. The book I loved the most was book 10: The Lake of Souls.
The series escalates very quickly, it goes down so fast, you don't even have time to breath properly. I have outgrown supernatural books over the years, but I can say that this series was really likeable and I enjoyed it. Not as amazing as Vampire Academy which is my favourite vampire series of all, but still this one delivers a lot!
So please, supernatural lovers, give yourself a favour and read this one. You won't regret it!
