A MAGNUM OPUS OF MYSTERY; BREATHTAKING VICTORIAN THRILLER
although certainly not the first, Sherlock Holmes is perhaps the most well known fictional detective to ever exist; inspiring countless other writers to follow suit and establishing the crime thriller's station in popular fiction. there is no dearth of movie and television adaptations on the calculative, enigmatic, unemotional, discreet yet caring and perceptive sleuth who chases inconspicuous tracks left by devious minds of immense capacity; all the while gripping the readers in his characteristic demeanor and detailed observations; capturing the reader's imagination. although there is no question that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's superlative writing has survived the test of time and has rightly carved it place in the coveted 'timeless classics' category, sherlock Holmes as a character has also transcended the pages he was written upon and has become a popular and fairly well known figure; invading common expressions of English and engaging readership from the most unseeming audiences; from readers in Meiji japan to soviet soldiers defending Stalingrad in the bloodiest engagement of all of human history. the Hound of Baskervilles features Mr. sherlock and the vivid cast of Victorian and Edwardian characters found in his world at their best. the novel is structured in the form of a larger narrative mystery explored and progressed by a series of seemingly epistolary short stories; most of them ending in brilliant and very organic cliffhangers. having said that; the case of the hound of Baskervilles is a short and engaging read; and is narrated with the typical descriptive and pleasingly Delphic prose distinctive across all the four sherlock Holmes novels and 56 short stories. the mystery is set on the cryptic and gripping moors of rural England; supplemented by ample presence of gothic themes and architecture. a particularly winsome feature of this novel in particular is the narration of the thriller's progression and rising action through the shifting perspectives of the characters, who have very distinct voices capable of leaving a particular éclat on the reading experience. while doing so, the novel also shifts writing styles and formats; for example, it shifts from a primary narrative account to a diary based narration in the transition between chapters. In my opinion, this narrative style is very evident in the more famous novel produced in the same time period, 'Dracula' by Bram stoker. highly recommended for readers who love crime thrillers, who have read sherlock Holmes and want to explore further, people who are just curious to dive into the world of sherlock Holmes, or simply people who have a taste for gothic horror and are fans of Dracula and the case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. moreover, people who find the short story format to be engaging and convenient would also find themselves hooked to this book.
A mystery about a supernatural hound that preys on the Baskerville family. A classic mystery, and a must-read for fans of Sherlock Holmes. Spooky and clever.
good. Not boring. Sherlock Holmes illustration ver. look alike contest in my bedroom. I like Raymond Chandler's Philip more tho, bro is sassy n witty so clever. Watson reminds me of the penguin from Madagascar a little.
One of the best Sherlock Holmes short stories you'll come across. Holmes and Watson were already well-written characters but this storyline gives them the opportunity to portray a whole new emotion: fear. Genuine, monster-in-the-closet fear. I was particularly dumbfounded at the climax. Lovely read.
