In typical Poe fashion, this story is absolutely shocking and pulls no punches. Even for today’s standards, it's a disturbing tale. I didn't enjoy it as much as the The Cask of Amontillado though, that story currently is my all-time favorite of Poe's.

Me resulta hermosa la manera en que Poe relata la perdida de la cordura de un hombre sano; y su macabra obsesión con las distintas formas de deshacerse de los cuerpos, divina.

Cuando se le pregunta a cualquier lector acerca del cuento que más le fascina de Edgar Allan Poe, seguramente dirá que es este.
El primero que le viene a uno a la mente es indudablemente "El gato negro".
Nuevamente la locura, la obsesión y la muerte, al igual que en su relato 'hermano' llamado "El corazón delator" desequilibran a un narrador que está al borde de la insanía.
Tanto odio y venganza definen el final del cuento, tan abrumador como sorprendente.

از آدمی که حیوان آزاری میکنه باید ترسید، شاید تو مملکت ما از نظر خیلی ها زیاد غیرعادی به نظر نیاد (هرچند تعداد دوستداران و حامیان حیوانات شکر خدا رو به افزایش هست) ولی در کل یکی از نشانه های روان ناسالم افراد حیوان آزاری هست و باعث قساوت قلب آدمی میشه و ممکن هست کشتار حیوانات بعدها به قتل انسان تبدیل و اون شخص به راحتی کسی رو با کوچکترین خشم و کینه ای بکشه و کنترلی رو عملش نداشته باشه . درست مثل این داستان کوتاه عجیب و غریب که حکایت از این آدم های دیوانه دارد ...

اما من به همان اندازه که از وجود روح مطمئنم، یقین دارم که تبهکاری از نخستین انگیزه های قلبی انسان است. یکی از قوای نخستین تفکیک ناپذیر یا احساساتی که به شخصیت انسان شکل میدهد. کیست که صدبار دست به کار زشت یا نابخردانه ای نزده باشد تنها به این دلیل که میدانسته نباید دست بدان کار بزند؟ مگر ما گرایشی همیشگی به رغم تشخیص درستمان در به زیر پا گذاشتن آنچه قانون است نداریم آن هم تنها به این دلیل که میدانیم چنین است؟ همین روحیه ی تبهکاری را میگویم که کمر به نابودی نهایی من بست‌. همین شوق بی پایان انسان به آزردن خود به خشونت ورزیدن با سرشت خود. خطا کردن به خاطر خطا کردن بود که مرا بر آن داشت تا زخم زدن بر پیکر حیوان زبان بسته را همچنان ادامه دهم و سرانجام کاملش کنم.

Inquietante, macabro y excepcional. Edgar Allan Poe, prodigio del crimen y el horror, nos ofrece en este relato corto una aventura narrada en primera persona por un hombre cuya mente sufre un deterioro voraz a manos del alcoholismo y otras fuerzas que corroen cualquier bondad que pudo haber en él para no dejar nada sino un espíritu corrompido, agresivo y paranoico.

El protagonista nos expresa de forma irremediablemente envolvente su espiral de descenso hacia la violencia donde se convierte en victimario tanto de su esposa como de las mascotas que algún día amó y en particular el nexo con un gato que acaba funcionando como punto de estallido de su locura y su ira. No voy a decir más porque sería spoilear pero insisto en destacar la proeza que consigue Poe al adentrarnos en la perversa psiquis del sujeto y en crear un aura genuinamente inquietante y angustiante a su alrededor a medida que suceden hechos cada vez más perturbadores.

The Black Cat (1842) is a truly horrible story by Edgar Allan Poe. It is horrible in an entirely literal sense, and is one of the darkest stories Poe ever wrote. It is a psychological study of guilt and madness resulting in part from alcoholism. This is an interesting stance taken by the author, since Poe himself was reputedly an alcoholic. Masterly though it is, I dislike this story intensely with its depiction of animal torture and the murder of his wife. There are themes recognisable from other stories; the murderer's guilt resulting in unearthly cries from the cat is similar to that felt by the character in the increasingly loud thumps of the heart in "The Tell-Tale Heart" . In both cases there is a surreal element where the reader assumes it is the murderer's conscience inventing the second cat - and the grotesquely beating heart.

The entombment alive was a favourite theme of Poe's.  It also featured in an earlier story, The Fall of the House of Usher (1839) and also again in The Cask of Amontillado (1846).

داستان کوتاهی عالی، درجه‌ی یک و ممتاز.
خواندن داستان کوتاهی در این حجم در حالت عادی شاید کمتر از نیم ساعت زمان نیاز داشته باشد، اما به شکلی این داستان برای من مرموز و جذاب بود که آرام و با لذت خواندمش.
به خاطر کوتاهی داستان به داستان ورود نمی‌کنم
اما تنها به این مورد اشاره می‌کنم که: شخصیت اصلی داستان همان‌قدر برایم شخصیت جالبی داشت که «بارنی» در سریال «چگونه با مادرتان آشنا شدم» برایم جالب بود، رفتاری کاملا عکس چیزی که به آن علاقه داشت! ضمنا حین و پایان داستان هم من را به یاد صادق‌خان هدایت و یکی از داستان‌های کوتاهش انداخت...

Damn, this man was twisted! Damn, this story was magnificent! Damn, it came flooding back to me why I really enjoy Poe!

Having read Poe's classic in junior high school (grade eight English) when we were doing an entire term on diverse British and American mystery and thrillers (from the 19th to the middle of the 20th century), I should probably be rereading this tale thoroughly before posting a review, as I do not remember all that much except that The Black Cat is well crafted, engagingly descriptive, but also and nevertheless so horribly creepy and frightening that it actually gave me some rather major nightmares as a teenager. The Black Cat was therefore not all that enjoyable a reading experience for me, especially since I did not even have the option of abandoning the story, as  was required and assigned class reading and we were likely being tested on it (and I do rather vividly remember that the cruelty, the nastiness that the poor cat experiences while alive, was one of the major if not the main reason for my nightmare dreams, for my angst, and although I did much appreciate that the abusive, drink maddened tormentor ended up receiving his just due at the end, the freakiness of the "dead" cat coming back, of the tormentor becoming the tormented, did not make the tale itself, did not really make The Black Cat any more enjoyable or less terrifyng, in fact, it but increased my level of discomfort and pain).

And because I do still tend to get weird dreams and nightmares when and upon reading creepy and/or frightening stories (and especially if they feature abused or absurd animal characters), I have now firmly decided NOT to ever reread The Black Cat. I can and do appreciate the verbal mastery of this tale (especially and appreciatingly Poe's style and wordcraft) but the themes, the entire premise of The Black Cat are simply not all that personally enjoyable and much too uncanny, even potentialy terrifying for my tastes (and honestly, there are simply too many books languishing on my to read and even my currently reading shelves which are begging to be read, reviewed and well, I just do not desire to spend any more of my time on a story that will more than probably once again stress my emotions and needlessly frighten me). I guess, I just do NOT much like horror, even if said horror fiction is rightfully considered a classic (and hence, but two stars for The Black Cat as truth be told, I simply do not like and often cannot even handle horror stories and indeed even horror stories where in the end, justice is appropriately served).

Poe's short stories are so similar to each other.

Sometimes I wonder why I like reading them so much.

He was a genius.
