This book has two parts. The first part is a well-reasoned and insightful critique of George Orwell's book «Nineteen Eighty-Four» showing that it is not so much a plausible forecast of the future as rather a reflection of the socio-political situation at the time of its writing. The second part is a piece of dystopian futuristic fiction that is also a reflection of the socio-political situation at the time of its writing. The attentive reader of the first part will easily spot the flaws of the second part.

Burgess was a genius and this was his greatest work. They should make the second half into a movie, it would still be fantastic now, even with all we know of the world.

I liked the first section more than the second. In the end I did not gain any perspective on Burgess. This is my first book for Burgess so it might be the reason I did not get it.

A special book, a necessary book. Half and half this baby, and each one is needed for your education. A look at a very believable alternate universe.

Not the most gripping thing I've ever read, but interesting and thought-provoking. Burgess has a liveliness to his writing that I feel Orwell lacks and thus I enjoyed this much more than 1984. I wouldn't have gotten near as much out of this, however, without having recently re-read 1984.

A fantastic companion to Orwell's 1984. A look from 1978 at a dystopian Britain that feels real today, especially with Charles coming to the throne.

I was told this book was a sequel to 1984. It isn't. The first part of this book is a series of interviews with Burgess playing both interviewer and interviewee to discuss Orwell's 1984. The second part of the book was set in 1985, which was less than a decade in the future at the time. Burgess tells the story of one man during that year if 1976 trends had reached extremes. He saw labor unions rise in power and the Middle East immigration of the time as the biggest threats to the UK. It isn't at all 1984, it is right wing alarmist crap.
