1985 by Anthony Burgess

219 pages in this edition, spread across a number of unnumbered chapters. Roughly broken down into 4 definable parts, but listed as 2 books (1) Part 1 1984 (2) Part 2 1985.

Definable parts:

(1)1984 is an explanation/discussion of the workings of the theory of 1984. On a personal level I found this quite complex, and admit to reading it quite badly, on the way to work; spare moments etc, however because I am familiar with 1984 I was able to relate to Orwell's work, and I was offered possibilities/explanations that I had not previously considered.

(2)1985 was written in a typical Burgess fictional style, easily attainable, entertaining, following in a sense, yet through a different course, a futuristic dystopian nightmare leading to collapse of known society, hence the parallel with Orwell. However the point of destruction is reached via a different course.

(3)'A note on Workers English', like Orwell's 'Superplusgood' Newspeak, Burgess develops his own language 'We'. This section is not particularly long, but would arguably need more attention than I gave it to throughly appreciate the depths of his work here.

(4)'Epilogue: an interview', in a short section of questions and answers relating largely to the possibilities of Burgess' work in our real future, interesting, though arguably out of date due to its having been written in the 1970's at the height of Trade Union power in the UK diminished at the coming of Margret Thatcher in 1979.

On a personal level I enjoyed the book, but feel that the reader has to be patient with this work to get the very best from this educated and talented author. I feel it vital that the reader makes themselves familiar with Orwell's 1984.

Started reading this (the story not the essays) but I've had to give up. I hate giving up on books but this one really isn't for me.

I have enjoyed only the first part which is author's interpretation of "1984" by George Orwell. "1985" itself was disgusting from the 2nd page. I couldn't finish...

Fabulous novel that deserves more praise. An interesting riff on the Orwell classic.

Underrated work of genius. Takes Orwell's 1984 as a starting point and then maps out a dystopian Britain from the vantage point of the late 70s. Interesting structure.

The essays in the first half of the book were interesting but not necessary to read it as a stand alone book. As far as it being right wing garbage, I strongly disagree. In the epilogue assuming that someone made it that far he said he was being melodramatic. And admits that he cannot tell and doesn’t want to predict the future. But if one takes an honest look at the story and says they cannot possibly see our future in this is living under a rock.

Mr Burgess appears to have set the review section on fire!
The countless comments labelling this book as ‘far-right, racist, fascist are as ridiculous as most, as if it is all of those things, then so is Orwell’s 1984.
It is rather apt for 2024 as much is in actual fact true. The book isn’t particularly interesting, though is merely a take on a differing form of authoritarianism from a foreign state implementing itself on the UK (or how it’d be on any other). There are certainly a plethora of works on the negatives of European intervention, yet everyone loses their ‘ish’ when Islam is involved (even though their form of slavery put any Europeans to utter shame) which proves the accuracy of both Orwell’s and Burgess’s points.

Those who will not reason, are bigots, those who cannot, are fools, and those who dare not, are slaves.
- Lord Byron.

A mixed bag.

At times very funny, quite graphic. Some predictions seem to have come true, but not all. . . . yet!
