Young readers eager to learn American history will really enjoy this book, which presents a vivid picture of a complex, likeable, and very human Thomas Jefferson. There were definitely some sticky-points in the story, but I think that only made the portrait more accurate. I really enjoyed reading this (and was so excited to see the illustrations were done by one of my favorite artists--John O'Brien!)

The book the I read was titled Who was Thomas Jefferson by Dennis Brindell Fradin. The genre of this book is nonfiction because it was written about a real person. The setting is in Vigrinia and the main characters are Thomas Jefferson and his whole family. This book is about Thomas Jefferson. It tells you about everything important he did in his life and where he went to college and what type of jobs he had. It also tells about the friends he had and how they haloed him. I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars because it was e really well written book with lots and detail and description into it.

Grade: 5th

I chose this cute book to represent the access I want my future students to have in order to learn about our Presidents. This biography, along with many others about our Presidents, are resources that I hope my students will pick up to read in my classroom or “rent” and take home with them. In this book, students can learn about the President pictured on our U.S nickels, portrayed on the huge Mount Rushmore sculpture in South Dakota, and who was also known as “Tall Tom” or “Mr. Mammoth” due to his height and his collection of prehistoric bones. As they read further they will not only discover the heart and challenges of our third President, but also the legacy he left behind.

Read the 3 of these, Ben Franklin, George Washington and this one, for school to teach the kids. I thought they were well written, easy for the kids, and contained a lot of information, in an easy straight forward way. Thomas Jefferson had a tough life...not that any of them at the time period had it easy, but his was especially rough.

This book details to the life and accomplishments of Thomas Jefferson, one of the Founding Fathers. Like most books, it glosses over some of the Jefferson's controversial decisions and life choices. Provides a good overview of Jefferson's life and makes good use of primary sources such as Jefferson's own writings.

While it will not give students a deeper appreciation of history, it does teach them all that they need to know about the "good" parts of Jefferson's life.

I didn't know who he was, and now I know.
From the introduction:

He wrote the Declaration of Independence.
Its stirring words, such as “all men are created equal,” have inspired people for more than 225 years.
Jefferson was a giant in many fields. A great statesman, he was our third President. A gifted architect.
Jefferson also felt guilty that he didn’t live by his own words. The man who wrote, “all men are created equal,” owned hundreds of slaves. And toward the end of his life, the former President landed deeply in debt.

I love reading biographies. Jefferson was a very interesting man, and I enjoyed reading about him in this children's book. I'd definitely recommend reading it to your kids (probably 9 or 10 and older).

I thought it was a very nice book I do believe though that the drawings could be better.

Continuing to read these with my kids. Helpful, in that they are relatively neutral. They do not lionize their subjects, nor are they unfairly critical. With Jefferson, people tend either to admire him, or loathe him by pointing out his flaws and maybe taking them beyond the evidence. In this book, on the one hand, it points out that he did more to combat slavery than any of his peers, and on the other hand, he still owned slaves and did far less to end slavery than he could have. With most things, Jefferson was a mixed bag, but for his time he was an exceptional thinker and leader, and the book balances these difficult truths. If there was one place the book could have been improved; it did not delve into Jefferson's famous contradictory nature. He was known for taking whatever side was advantageous in the moment, but the book ignores his sphinx-like disposition. On the whole, a decent child-friendly introduction.

Sadly, this is the only type of book I seem capable of reading these days. Still they are always great! Still basking in my Hamilton afterglow, it was fun to learn more about Thomas, Thomas!
