The award-winning author of nearly 300 non-fiction books for children and young adults, Dennis Fradin is known for his meticulous research, attention to detail and smooth, graceful writing.

Fradin attributes his success in part to years of teaching in the Chicago Public Schools. In order to hold his second graders' attention at the end of the day, he would spin stories about crayons in distress and birds with broken wings. One such story caught the attention of an editor who asked him to write a series of books about the United States. The Sea to Shining Sea series (Children's Press), launched Dennis's career as a full-time author.

Dennis Fradin has written children's books on topics as varied as astronomy, colonial history, the Underground Railroad, slave escapes and scientific discoveries. He has written biographies of Thomas Jefferson, Samuel Adams, Jane Addams and Louis Braille, among others. Bound for the North Star is his riveting collection of true slave escape stories. The Power of One: Daisy Bates and the Little Rock Nine, co-authored with his wife Judy, was a Golden Kite Honor Book.

Dennis has collaborated with Larry Day on two picture books, Let It Begin Here! and Duel! with Walker Books. He's completed two dozen Turning Points books for Marshall Cavendish. Along with his wife Judy, Dennis wrote Five Thousand Miles to Freedom for National Geographic Children's Books, followed by their Witness to Disaster series.

Young readers eager to learn American history will really enjoy this book, which presents a vivid picture of a complex, likeable, and very human Thomas Jefferson. There were definitely some sticky-points in the story, but I think that only made the portrait more accurate. I really enjoyed reading this (and was so excited to see the illustrations were done by one of my favorite artists--John O'Brien!)

The book the I read was titled Who was Thomas Jefferson by Dennis Brindell Fradin. The genre of this book is nonfiction because it was written about a real person. The setting is in Vigrinia and the main characters are Thomas Jefferson and his whole family. This book is about Thomas Jefferson. It tells you about everything important he did in his life and where he went to college and what type of jobs he had. It also tells about the friends he had and how they haloed him. I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars because it was e really well written book with lots and detail and description into it.

I chose this cute book to represent the access I want my future students to have in order to learn about our Presidents. This biography, along with many others about our Presidents, are resources that I hope my students will pick up to read in my classroom or “rent” and take home with them. In this book, students can learn about the President pictured on our U.S nickels, portrayed on the huge Mount Rushmore sculpture in South Dakota, and who was also known as “Tall Tom” or “Mr. Mammoth” due to his height and his collection of prehistoric bones. As they read further they will not only discover the heart and challenges of our third President, but also the legacy he left behind.

Read the 3 of these, Ben Franklin, George Washington and this one, for school to teach the kids. I thought they were well written, easy for the kids, and contained a lot of information, in an easy straight forward way. Thomas Jefferson had a tough life...not that any of them at the time period had it easy, but his was especially rough.

This book details to the life and accomplishments of Thomas Jefferson, one of the Founding Fathers. Like most books, it glosses over some of the Jefferson's controversial decisions and life choices. Provides a good overview of Jefferson's life and makes good use of primary sources such as Jefferson's own writings.

While it will not give students a deeper appreciation of history, it does teach them all that they need to know about the "good" parts of Jefferson's life.

I didn't know who he was, and now I know.
From the introduction:

He wrote the Declaration of Independence.
Its stirring words, such as “all men are created equal,” have inspired people for more than 225 years.
Jefferson was a giant in many fields. A great statesman, he was our third President. A gifted architect.
Jefferson also felt guilty that he didn’t live by his own words. The man who wrote, “all men are created equal,” owned hundreds of slaves. And toward the end of his life, the former President landed deeply in debt.
