I have never read one of her books before this one. I am injoying it so far ... only on chapt. 16 or so today. It seems to be a sort of who-done-it with saga overtones with just a touch of romance/intrigue thrown in for flavor!
Finished this one and did enjoy it ... and, will probably check out the sequel from the library soon.
I loved Barbara Taylor Bradford's "Emma Harte" series/saga and so I had high expectations for this new saga. At first I wasn't sure if I liked this book or not but the closer to the end I got, I realized that it's very good and was looking forward to the next book. It's not as good as the "Emma Harte" saga but it's worth reading.
A well-researched historical fiction by this popular author taking us back to the late 1800s through WWI as life was lived in England by the upper class. Titles, intrigue, backstabbing all come into play as a new generation of titled citizens work to keep their wealth and position.
This book is the one for you if you like frothy, soap opera type books. The main character is Edward Deravenel and is about the family dynasty and business empire he creates, and the various women he loves. Fairly predictable, with two dimensional characters. It may not be To kill a mocking bird, however sometimes you want to read a light piece.
Waaay too long. When you think something interesting is about to happen, a very convenient event occurs that takes the potentially exciting climax right out of it. Everyone and everything has a very weak foundation. I did finish it in hopes that something worthwhile would happen but nope.
This book is loosely based on the life of King Edward the fourth, and Richard Neville the Earl of Warwick. However, it is pay several hundred years later. But treachery and deceit know no timeframe. The actual storyline was not bad at all, and I could see many of the parallels between the fictional characters and the historical characters. I wasn't overly fond of the sex scenes, as I think they tended to detract from the storyline.
I've had to say I find the book reasonably enjoyable. And the reader didn't admirable job.
Loved it. BTB at her best, I love the way you get wrapped up in their world. Have now read the 3 books in this trilogy, loved the first two, hated the last very boring book - but wonder if BTB will write another in this series?
Really enjoyed it. Didn't matter that i'd already read part 2 (purchased & read not realising it was a series). Enthralled & gripped. Didn't want to put it down. Now I must get part 3!!
The position as head of this early 20th Century family in London is given to Edward Deravelel when he is only 17 years old. He is handsome, bright, rich, and a killer with the ladies. Characters are two dimensional and fairly predictable, but the action and the friction among them is pretty good.
I am somewhat on the fence about this book. While I usually enjoy family sagas, this novel was a bit superficial and overly simplistic. While the reader gets to know the characters, I really didn't care for them as I have in other BTB novels. The story was alright and I read it to the end. From 1903 to 1918, the reader is lead through the lives, loves and losses of this noble English family, The Deravenel's. Will I read the next novel, time will tell.
