I’ve not read BTB for many years and this didn’t seem to me to be her best work. This is the first of a trilogy and this I think is my issue. The novel is slow, presumably to fill the pages and make the story a trilogy, when it could really have been condensed not one volume.

Set at the beginning of the twentieth century, this story evokes the period well. There are twists and turns in the plot to keep the reader entertained and the denouement is sufficiently conclusive to satisfy, whilst still leaving a desire to know what happens next. Masterly!

Not sure about the main character. Am I supposed to like him or not? Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. Maybe that's the point.

Whatever, I shall be looking for the next instalment in due course.

It started out great. Towards the end was a bit of a letdown. One character is introduced by the middle and if you removed her, it doesn't really make a difference anyway.

Was so excited to see a new book by this author. enjoyed the story: the triumphs and the tragedies that changed the lives of the characters. There's enough intrigue to keep the book interesting! As soon as the other two books came out, just had to read 'em. always know that i'll enjoy her books and look forward to them.
