An enthralling tale of a young female scholar in attempt to persevere in a new environment. These books expresses the essence of feminism and gender equality despite the contradicting opinions of people at that time. Anne Shirley, a powerful character as she strives to excels in her studies and refused to conform to the orthodox view where women are pressurized to become housewives. A role model, an activist who indomitably changed society for the better. Her empathy and jubilant disposition always remind me to find joy in simple things. The spectacularly written description of Prince Edward Island sends me into a world of unending nature, acting as an escape from the hustle and bustle of reality. However, there is one aspect I find cumbersome in the story, Anne's denial of her romantic feelings toward Gilbert Blythe. Nevertheless, these are brilliant books that I particularly recommend to young girls.

I had so much fun reading this book! I realize that girls of my generation read it eons ago, BUT I was too busy outside playing to sit still for that long.
This really is a timeless classic. Though I imagine some of the vocabulary could be challenging for today's worth, I think the beauty of the writing will out.
The story telling is so masterfully done. Full of surprises. Not overly sentimental. But just touching enough to remind us of how precious life is.
The author most definitely was very aware...whether she realized it or not. : )
I LOVE all the deeper meanings to things that I can see that I would not have seen in my youth.
Have fun discovering this classic OR re-reading it and savoring the skill with with L.M. Montgomery wrote.

I read these two stories one after the other in an omnibus book. I wish I'd have read this book sooner because I really enjoyed both stories. Anne was such a great character, and I wish I lived in Avonlea because it's sounds delightful.
The writing was beautiful and so descriptive that I felt like I was actually there.
Each character is very well-written and even the background characters are very fleshed out, which I really liked because there are so many authors who don't tell you much about the background characters.
I'm really looking forward to discovering the rest of L.M. Montgomery's books, she's an amazing author!

Anne Shirley, an 11-year-old orphan, comes on the train to Avonlea, a small farming town on Prince Edward Island in Eastern Canada, expecting to have a real home and family at last. Matthew Cuthbert, who has come to the station to fetch her, hasn't the heart to tell her that they had asked for, and were expecting a boy. On the journey to Green Gables she chatters enthusiastically about everything she sees, and how glad she is to have come to such a beautiful place.

A Bildungsroman, with descriptions of the beauties of the countryside and changes of the seasons that make one think that Prince Edward Island must be paradise. Anne goes to the local school, where she makes friends and enemies, and approaches life with a freshness and enthusiasm that charm most people, except, apparently, her chief guardian and upbringer, Marilla Cuthbert.

This was my favourite childhood book and it is over 50 years since I read it so I decided to buy it (it was a library book 1st time round) and re-read it. I fell in love with Anne all over again and realised why it is still my favourite.
The character of Anne Shirley is simply wonderful, funny, great fun and highly entertaining. The resulting TV series (especially the more recent ones) are not a patch on the book and the most recent is a terrible, altered version of the story.
This book also reminded me of the reason why I love the countryside so much as Montgomery's descriptions as truly beautiful. It is my hope all girls will read this at least once in their life.

Definitely 5 stars. I laugh and cry with Anne throughout this book. If only I have the continuation of this series, I will jump straight into them.

«Anne’s horizon had closed in since the night she had sat there after coming home from Queen’s; but if the path set before her feet was to be narrow she knew that flowers of quiet happiness would bloom along it.»

This is definitely the type of book you want to read in a park at the beginning of spring. I'm taking off points for lacking a more interesting plot and me not liking chatty Anne in her younger years but overall enjoyed to read it and am glad it's a rather easy classic.

I actually enjoyed the book very much.
Having watched the series first gave me a sort of overview on how the characters are.
Anne is such a complex yet relatable character.
Now i need to search for the other books.

Anne of Green Gables: 5⭐️
Anne of Avonlea: 3.5⭐️
BROOOO I LOVED ANNE OF GREEN GABLES SO MUCH SHES THE CUTEST SWEETEST CHILD IN THE WORLD I LOVE HER.
So the first book was sweet as hell and I kinda thought that we would see a bit of blossoming romance between Anne and Gilbert but I guess that’s in the third book so I am STARVED oml I really thought Gilbert was gonna have loads of scenes in the sequel but NOPE when I tell you I was CLINGING to the scraps of rivals to lovers that was in this. Maybe if I’d have known that Anne and Gilbert’s relationship doesn’t develop beyond friendship before reading I would’ve enjoyed it more but I didn’t do now I’m complaining lol
