I know I read this as a kid but for some reason it didn't leave me with a big "lasting impression" or any sort of feeling I could really latch onto when I thought about the book as an adult. So, I came to it fresh, in a way. And I was MAJOR impressed! The story is so much fun, so imaginative and hilarious (and a tad scary at times!) and it's the best sort of tall-tale, causing our minds to boggle even as we realize maybe some of it could have shadows of truth in the real world. It might even cause us to ponder the role food plays in our lives. I wasn't sure that I'd enjoy the illustrations at first--the kids and mom at the breakfast table looked a tad odd to me--but I ended up falling in love with them! They were SO detailed and fascinating! And they added so much to the story! I loved the quirky little touches, like the movie theater playing "Breakfast and Tiffany's" and the like. So cute!

tOne of my favorite books is Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs written by Judi Barrett .I think other kids should read this awesome book and I give it 5 stars. In my opinion I recommend this book to kids.

ttI like when the grandpa used his wild imagination to create an interesting goofy story to tell Henry and his sister. It’s obvious that is not real because it’s not possible to rain juice, soup, pancakes and to have a tornado of tomato sauce. This book couldn’t be interesting without grandpa’s wild imagination.

tI liked the way the story went because,in the beginning the weather was controllable. Then the weather changed and went crazy and it turned into a big storm that turned the town into junk. But then,at the end of the story grandpa decided to add a happy ending.

I enjoyed this book because it’s funny. Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs is a great book because the illustrations look awesome and the pictures make kids laugh. The pictures look awesome because in the end of the story Ron Barrett drew houses out of bread and the snow made with mash potatoes. the story Ron Barrett drew houses out of bread and the snow made with mash potatoes.

In conclusion ,now you know why I recommend this book to children and i give it 5 stars.

Judi Barrett, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (Atheneum, 1978)

A classic of kidlit that I never actually got round to reading (I was ten when it was released, and feeling too old for stuff like this; I first read 'Salem's Lot two years previous) until now, a year and change after seeing the film version (which both I and my daughter adored, though it seemed few others did). It is, of course, an almost entirely different story; the setting from the book, the small island town of Chewandswallow, was preserved, but everything else in the movie is different. (What does that mean? Why, that you should read the book, of course!) What we have here is a lovely, and quite funny, tall tale presented to a couple of inquisitive kids by a much-beloved grandfather who is a veteran spinner of tall tales, and simply describes the place and its weather. The bulk of the book's hook comes from the illustrations by Barrett's (former? So says wikipedia, though no cite is given) husband Ron, which are just as amusing as you'd expect. Very cute book for the I-can-read-it-myself crowd (think 4-6 here). *** 1/2

Oddly prescient about climate change and climate refugees, this ultimate celebration of the five-second rule is just too goofy for me.

The plot takes place in the small town of Chewandswallow. The story starts out with grandpa telling a bedtime story. The town had strange weather. It never rained or snow. All it ever did was drop food from the sky. It'd rain meatballs, pizza, and pancakes. Some other kinds of food would fall to. The town people eventually have to leave because it gets to dangerous. In the end every one is safe and sound.

The characters are the kids and the grandpa. The mother is mentioned, but there were no names mentioned. They were not a big family. There were only a hundred or so people on the island. The book is really interesting on how much food can drop on this little island.

The story takes place a peaceful little town called Chewandswallow. It is on a small island in the middle of no where. There were some other lands around it. It is a peaceful little town. Something goes wrong though. In the end every one helps each other out. The time of the story is in the afternoon. Sometimes it talks about the morning, but not very often.

I would recommend this book to all kids. This book was a fun book. There is nothing bad or anything about it. You could read this book as a bed time story to your own kids. I rated this book three stars because it was fun, but yet it really wasn't interesting to me.

As one of my favorite books when I was a little girl~ I revisit this book every few years to see if it still holds up to what I remembered & loved.
And It is still in my top 5 Favorite books of all time! The story is cute & endearing while being silly & playfully semi-serious at the same time. Plus the illustrations are just flat out amazing. Even after all these years of art enhancements & the digital art age~I still think this extremely detail-oriented cross hatch style of illustration is gorgeous and not seen much of anymore in art, much less in children's books. There are so many hidden gems drawn within each of the panels & the I still adore the subdued color pallet on some pages in contrast to the straight black & white illustrations. I also think it teaches the subtle lesson of "too much of a good thing"

I mean, it's a cute book, but it's so silly. I guess that would be what makes kids like it so much? But for me, it was boring. We never find out why the weather went haywire.

I loved this book. The artwork is wonderful and the way the text is so dry and matter-of-fact is so funny. I can't wait to see the film.

Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs is a story about a small little town called Chewandswallow where the weather patterns are bit abnormal. At first the townspeople enjoyed the storms of food, but after a while the weather got out of control! Instead of the normal orange juice rains and small proportions of dinner, tornadoes of tomato sauce and giant hamburgers threatened the lives of the townspeople! They decide to abandon the town and find themselves in a coastal town that did not experience crazy “food weather.”

Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs allows the reader to experience what it could be like living in a world where it rains breakfast, lunch, and dinner. While the book puts a creative spin on weather patterns, the story itself is pretty hard to believe. However, the imagery and dramatic plot would appeal to any young child. The illustrations add humor to the story by assisting the reader in visualizing this strange town. The uniqueness of this plot makes this a very entertaining read for any age of reader.

My three-year-old couldn't quite keep up with the narrative of this adorable and imaginative children's book, but it's definitely one of my personal favorites. I might just use it to teach literary analysis with my 9th grade students!

I wish maple syrup fell from the sky!

A fun read-out-loud with my nieces. I somehow missed out on this one in my childhood, so I am glad I could introduce myself and the girls to this classic story - several giggles and laughs at the great illustrations.
