Runaways follows the story of six kids whose parents get together each year to discuss charity work. The kids get bored waiting for them and use secret passages to watch what their parents are doing in the library. What they see shocks them – their parents are super villains in a group called The Pride and they just murdered a young woman. The kids don’t know what to do and regroup the next day. Things start getting out of hand as super powers and protective dinosaurs are discovered. As they go to rescue the last kid, they battle the parents to save her. They get her and escape and the parents say this is their last chance to turn themselves in before The Pride really gets involved. Their parents spin the story to pin the murder on the kids, and the group goes into hiding.

This was an unexpectedly engrossing story for me – I want to know what happens next! The full color was beautiful and I appreciated the spin on superheroes to super villains. I was really put off by the use of ‘retarded’ in the first chapter and was surprised when another character called out its misuse a few pages later. The story is unique and fresh, looking forward to reading more!

One of my bookish resolutions for 2021 was to start reading more comic books, and it has gotten off to an amazing start! Even though the art style is not the most sophisticated and the dialogues PG-13, the premise is really unique and it is a page-turner.

I especially like the use of color and personality granted to each character, just bordering on stereotypical, but managing not to tip the scales.

4.5 stars.

This was so fun and action packed! I really enjoyed the art and the dialogue was quite funny. While this is obviously aimed at younger readers, adults will still be able to enjoy it. This was just a quick entertaining read and I'll for sure be finishing this series.

Just like every other time I've read it, this remains all kinds of awesome.

The title for this comic is seriously spot on. Runaways is simply about a group of runaway teenagers who witnessed something more than slightly traumatic and want to do something about it.

Before going into this comic, I had heard some not so good things about it from a friend, so my expectations were kinda low. And even though it wasn't fan-freaking-tastic... it was pretty enjoyable. Yes, there were those parts where I was not amused at all, but overall, volume 1 had a solid introduction of plot and characters. 3.5

Started this after watching the last season of the show. TV series was pretty amazing and this promises to be great as well.

I am honestly not sure what to think of this.
Excessive force used on your own children/friend's children does not seem very plausible to me.

Seriously,

Even so, I would not be able to stab a child with a big stick or even allow one of my friends to beat up my kid.

And when I was a teen I definitely contemplated running away from home but attacking my parents or my parent's friends would not be something I could do

Sure they saw some weird event that set everything off but I guess I give everyone a bit to much 'benefit of the doubt'.
Hoping they get to 'talk it out' a bit so we can get more back story.
Definitely going to give vol 2 a shot.

This book didn’t age well. The characters use the word “gay” to disparage their parents behavior and the word “retarded” to reference something they don’t like. Ugh. I look forward to seeing the release of the new Runaway comics, as this one is ready for a replacement.

I didn't like this as much as some other people have. First of all, the villains aren't that interesting. In fact, they are Shocker level bad, but we're supposed to believe that they control the city. Second, the whole parents-are-so-evil thing doesn't really appeal to me. I mean, the parents are doing what they are doing to provide a better future, but as soon as things get out of hand they threaten to kill their children? As a parent, I'm not buying that. Even evil parents would have some compassion for their children. Otherwise, they are just cookie-cutter "evil" characters with no real human characteristics. Lastly, I didn't care for the art in this. It was oddly stiff, except for the mouths, which seemed to have been transplanted from Jim Carrey.

I'm really liking this so far. I plan to finish up the series and do a review of the whole thing.

Spoilers

This is a review of the first 10 graphic novels in this series. This series started off strong. I'd probably finish up if they were all on Scribd, but I'm just not interested enough to go on from here. The Art kept changing throughout this series which I found distracting. Volumes 8 and 9 in particular weren't my cup of tea, and I thought several of the volumes were just filler. So my rating for the entire series up to volume 10 is 3 1/2 stars.
