WHY WAS THIS BOOK ON MY TO-READ SHELF FOR SO LONG!?!!
After reading the description and for the first 85% of the book, I thought that this was only going to be a book about a murder mystery that was bookish and based on the works of Alexander Dumas. It was an EXTRAORDINARILY well-written murder mystery, though, and really only ever-so-slightly cheesy, considering the content (c'mon now, how ridiculously hard is it to write a murder mystery based on the works of Dumas and not have it turn out at least a little cheesy?? not possible...). Overall, quite well done. The great writing, interesting storyline, and suspense that Perez-Reverte was able to create (LOTS!!!) was making this one a solid 4 stars. It reminded me a few times of Shadow of the Wind, though its been awhile since I've read that book.
Then, at 85%, the book took a turn. It managed to create even MORE suspense, go in a direction I didn't see coming (this doesn't happen frequently for me in these types of books), and keep me in dire suspense until the literal last paragrraph. I couldn't put the book down through the last 20%ish. I stayed up until 1:30am reading this book (I NEVER do that), and spent another 30 minutes re-reading details, googling tidbits, and mulling over the ending.
Maybe I loved this book a ton because my expectations weren't at this level, but I thought this was great. I am definitely going to look up some more Perez-Reverte. Super reccomend this one, especially since its a pretty "easy" read.
