The fifth book of this series is interesting, to say the least. It has one of the most frustrating beginnings (I can’t recall if the twist ever really surprised me), but one of the most exciting endings. The Shattering acts as a bridge between two crucial plot arcs- the siege on the Great Tree and the realization that saving the animal kingdom will take active and immediate effort. We finally realize the true potential of what the Pure Ones can accomplish with the power they've won, and there is some valuable worldbuilding. Overall, it serves the series well.

This book was super intriguing as it added more depth to the mind control with a layer of infiltration. Reading it reminded me of how narcissists manipulate people, but this was made so much more intense by the Flecks. It was also interesting as it was the first book that focused more on other characters and not Soren. I especially liked the battle at the end and Primrose's way of escaping the influence of the Flecks. Also the hint of dissatisfaction from one of the generals is a nice seed for the next book.

This book was just as good as the rest. I hate the "Pure Ones". They're not pure at all. They are a group of owls that kill other owls. I felt sad when Eglantine got shattered. I'm glad she was ok.

This tale is about Soren's sister, Eglantine, who begins to dream and the dream is so realistic that she believes that her parents are still alive. The dream leads her to the tree where she was born to spend time with her mother. However, the owl who greets her had a few different characteristic but Eglantine ignores them because she is so delighted to discover that her mother is really alive but where is her father. In visit after visit she asks about her father but he is always out hunting. Eventually Eglantine realizes that something is wrong with this situation.

Meanwhile, Soren is searching for his sister. Somce Eglantine manages to leave the tree for her "home" without anyone seeing her the search fails. It is her best friend who follows Eglantine and realizes what has happened. The two need to escape from the Pure Ones in order to return to their lives and the other Guardians. This is another fine read with owls as the key characters fighting evil in their forest.

My first thought when I saw this book was:
It is called The Shattering, because, since Nyra was on the cover, Nyra and Kludd would have an egg, and the egg would shatter.

YOU, however, will have to read the book so you can make your own opinion...

READ IT!!!!!!!!

P.S. Read the first four FIRST!

My son loved these! He read them in about 3rd grade. I didn't share his love, but then I'm an adult and I experienced the story from a totally different point of view (I mean, fighting owls??! It was hard for me to get into.) I was willing to let him read whatever it took to get him to reading fluently and I was just happy to see him immersed in a book.
