Something felt off for the entire series. Wasn't terrible but it wasn't great either. Art was kind of weak. Nice to learn more about Catwoman's origin and family.
I bought this from a booth in the mall and it was completely sealed up but on clearence. I never had the chance to flip through it before buying but I was so excited about a new Catwoman graphic being added to my collection that I didn't think much of it.
I honestly don't recall much of the story as this was one of about 5 comics that I read in a night while being sick and out of work.
I remember that I was not highly impressed with the artwork and I had the feeling that I had read it before due to the rehashings used from previous works.
I have thought of re-reading it just to remind myself of how iffy it was and if I can let go of the fact that it is Catwoman and trade it in for something that I would actually love.
Well, that was extremely unpleasant. Part of that post-Dark Knight Returns era of DC, I guess, where they're trying to prove that comics can be for adults by having everyone swear all the time and everything be evil and corrupt. A book where the women are literally two things; nuns or prostitutes. The men are either cops or criminals...or both. Blah.
The first Catwoman mini-series! It coincides with Batman: Year One and that could’ve been cool. Unfortunately, I felt like the scenes from Year One were forced in. There wasn’t a fluid flow between the scenes we’d already seen and the new story. (Also, we don’t actually get every Selina scene from Year One!)
To me, that was the overall problem with this series; the story flow was not well done. There were moments that were jumped past when it could’ve given some needed context.
I loved seeing how (and who from) Selina learned to defend herself.
I wish we’d gotten to see where Sel got the idea to, and how she gained the skill of being a cat burglar. Adding to that, I wish we actually got to see the Catwoman in action. Even just a few pages (with no text!) That would’ve been really cool.
In the end though the story wasn’t really about that aspect of ‘The Cat’.
I appreciated the attempt to give us a more three dimensional character. I’m glad I read the building blocks of such an iconic character.
Better than it has any right to be. There aren't many non-garbage solo Catwoman comics, but this is one of them. It's a good companion piece to Batman: Year One, and sets up the future dynamic between the caped crusader and his most ambiguous adversary.
I believe this was the very first Catwoman solo series, which is strange considering this came out in 1989 and Catwoman had been around nearly 50 years at the time. This series ties directly into Batman Year One, and this was really the story that launched Catwoman as a popular solo character.
This is almost like a "deleted scene" version of Batman Year One that focuses on Catwoman, as we get to see more of what she was up to at the time. This is gritty, and Catwoman is presented as a mature, real character rather than the almost silly character she'd been in the past.
This is really a key series for Batman fans, and especially Catwoman fans.
I really liked some elements of the story. I love how Selina's story works in parallel with Bruce's. The continuity this has with Batman: Year One is also fantastic, and I really didn't know there were so many great stories set in the same time period. But the story also has a lot of issues and I wasn't engaged for all of it. I enjoyed the second half of this much more than the first half, as I just felt like some of the characters and storylines were lacking emotion and intetest (particularly the ‘sister’ storyline. And I’m not even sure why). The pacing is also a bit strange sometimes, I had to re-read many panels to understand what was happening. Still, this was a solid read, and a great start to Catwoman and Batman's relationship.
