Containing no substance whatsoever and more brand names than any other book

I've read other Plum Skyes's book, and this one is definitely the biggest flop. I'm all for a really cringey chick-lit storyline, but this novel was beyond cringe. (Trigger warning), I was rating this book two-three stars until the protagonist attempted to commit suicide. It was all downhill from there.

This book came in the mail today and I don't know why. Did I order it from half.com? Or maybe one of Amazon.com's used book sellers? Did I win it in a Bloggy Giveaway? Is it a present? I have no idea.

However, I checked it for drugs, and it came out clean. So I figured what the hell, I'll read it.

However. I'm only a couple of pages into it, and something about rich, vapid women in "good buildings" on Park Avenue seems eerily familiar.

So I'm wondering: has Chick-lit become so generic that it's a French-manicured blur, or have I actually read this book? Only time will tell.

I know a lot of people gave bad reviews for this book but I liked it. It was cute and fun. Yes the characters are extremely shallow and on their own planet. But thats what I liked. It was so far out of my world that it was extremely entertaining. I listened to the audio book and thought Sonya Walger did a very good job coming across perfectly for each of the characters. So as far as Moi is concerned :) if you are looking for a whimsy and fast book to read this is a good choice.

Such silly, silly fun! I love this book because it could have gone so badly, but doesn't! The main character is easily hateable: spoiled, superficial, rich, flaky. But you gradually learn (as does she) that she's much smarter, stronger, & cooler than you (or she) thought! I think the fact that she got into Harvard, solely motivated by the glory of the fashion & oxygen facials to be had in NY, sums it up. She thought she was doing it for a ridiculous reason, but you have to be pretty damn smart & determined to get into Harvard. This book is neither wise nor deep, but it is delightful & self-aware. And ridiculous, of course.

This had literally no plot until the last 30 pages and was pretty much the literary equivalent of cotton candy: completely substanceless and fun to consume for the first half, but turns nauseating in large quantities. I love meaningless fashion drivel as much as anyone but 300 pages was way, way too much paper to use on brand-dropping.

Seriously painful book to read. Which is saying a lot because I love brain candy books especially ones about the wealthy. Got halfway through when I realized I had already read it and hated it the first time.

не понимаю, почему у книги такие плохие отзывы. вполне хорошая книжка, chick-lit в стиле кинеселлы. кстати, да, до безумия похоже на шопоголика. сюжет другой, но атмосфера такая же и язык похожий.
книга повествует о девушках, которые живут в нью-йорке. именно о тех блондинках (иногда цвет волос другой), которые жутко поверхностные, целыми днями только бегают по шмоткам и с вечеринки на вечеринку. к счастью, гг - не совсем такая. у нее тоже бывают замашки блондинки (кстати, она темненькая), но в целом она нормальная. глупенькая местами, на бэкки блумвуд похожа, говорю же.
вообще пожить в шкуре таких девиц было очень развлекательно, может, даже перечитаю когда-нибудь.
книгу эту я взяла на полке буккроссинга в аэропорту хельсинки, так что тоже не абы-что.
язык прикольный. полным-полно сокращений, сленга и т.д. так что было вдвойне интересно.

гг живёт в нью Йорке, у неё есть подруга, такая блондинка, что прям кошмар. сама гг тоже умом не блещет, конечно )) вообще книга про жизнь девушек на Манхэттене, тусовки, дорогая одежда.
подруга гг Джулия решила найти себе фиансе. Каким-то образом фиансе нашла себе гг, его зовут зак. он сделал ей предложение, но ведёт себя странно - то милашка, то игнорит. на этой же веренинке, где она встретила зака, она еще встретила и начинающего режиссера чарли (ну сразу понятно, кто тут будет в конце с гг).
книжка веселая. секс заменён на Бразилию, тоже весело. гг говорит «поехать в рио, сплавиться по амазонке» и т.д.
Зак ее бросил, ибо она слишком поверхностная. а она уверена, что любит его. мне, если честно, пофиг, ибо их отношения все раскрыты на 10 страницы, то есть вообще не раскрыты. хотя они полгода встречались.
она решила убить себя, написала записку, улеглась голая в ванной, выпила таблетки. проснулась, Чарли (знакомый) на нее наорал, она передумала умирать. я даже не знаю, она меня начинает подбешивать. когда с чарли разговаривала, это кошмар, вела себя очень неадекватно.

чарли решил бросить джулию. видно, что ему нравится гг. но гг умчалась с итальянским принцем, поэтому Чарли ещё больше начал ухаживать за Джулией.
когда гг бросил Зак, ее соц жизнь в Нью Йорке закончилась. теперь, когда она встречается с принцем, все снова около нее вьются.
оказалось, что принц женат и с тремя детьми.
она его кинула. теперь ей нашли нового парня, режиссера кино, который повез ее в канны, а обратно уехал без нее. а аэропорту она встретила Чарли, он купил ей билет и вообще снова спас ее.

что за тупой выбор имен, ей-богу? у гг есть подруги и знакомые, достаточно частые персонажи в книге, по имени Julie, Jazz, Jolene, Lara. блин, ну нафига делать четыре персонажа с похожих или даже одной и той же букв?? я же путаюсь.

Джулия не такая и дурочка, решила организовать книжный клуб, специально наняла профессора Генри. а все пришли на встречу в бриллиантах.
гг переспала с Чарли, который расстался с Джулией. но Джулия, дура такая, считает что он всё ещё ее парень и игнорирует гг.
гг приехала на ДР к отцу, ее авто на полпути сломалось. она вломилась в замок, чтобы позвонить. замок принадлежит графу, за которого ее мама как раз хотела ее выдать. оказалось, что это Чарли.
в итоге, они остались вместе с джулией помирились (та стала фиансе генри).

I loved this book because it is a very whimsical piece. It was a fun, light read about a high society girl living in New York. It talks a lot about fashion and friendship (that revolves around everything material: parties, shoes, clothes, private jets, etc.)

On the contrary, I don't really think it is an appealing book to everyone. I find it sort of Sex And the City / Legally Blonde / Paris Hilton / Shopaholic type of story, which at first I did not find appealing, but as I get to read the book, it became more interesting that I looked forward to reading more of it. The story is a little bit on the shallow side, which I like for relaxing, because you don't get to think much.

One of my critiques, though, is that there were a lot of abbreviations and slang terms used in the text that I wouldn't understand outright. I may get the meanings through context clues, or through trusty old google.com, but I think it's one of the downsides of the book, 'cause I didn't really get to relate fully to the text. Sure I got the gist anyway, but it would have been better if I actually knew what some of those acronyms mean, so as to get the full humor of the text.

Anyway, I still give it 5 stars :)

It's very confusing i didnt know what was going on half the time.

The main character, "Moi," details what it takes to be a high society--Bergdorf Blonde--woman in New York. It's all about Chloe jeans, facials, great restaurants, and finding the perfect fiancee. Marrying that person isn't as important as the ring and showing off your guy.

I am so torn about this novel. At times, I was swept away in the superficial world of jet-setting. Then, the romance heated up, and I felt lost. Moi (and I found it annoying that her name wasn't clearer) whined through one bad relationship after another. Sadly, the guy you wanted her with came into the picture early, but after a while I wished he'd run away because she couldn't get her act together. But I did love his character and the twist in the end of who he was.

To be fair, she was immersed in a world that only added to her insecurities. Still, I wanted to see a backbone emerge. However, every time I thought I'd quit this book, I was drawn back in. So maybe I'm somewhat like Moi in that regard. She was definitely deeper than the women surrounding her, but that doesn't say a whole lot.

Bottom line... it was entertaining at times, and I couldn't help but want to know what would happen to the main character. It's like the beautiful candy you see in the store and can't resist.

If you love diving into a well-detailed world and connecting with a character, then give Bergdorf Blondes a chance.
