I couldn't finish this book.... and I truly tried. I rarely ever do not finish a book… almost always I force myself through the bad ones… but I couldn't get past the protagonist’s / author’s ego and the endless boring content in this one.

My super short “review” is a reflection of how little interest I have in this book.

"رحلة نحو الحرية " هذا ما يمكنني وصف به هذه الرواية . كانت توقعاتي لها مختلفة عما وجدت . لا أعني ان الرواية سيئة او لم تعجبني لكن فقط توقعتها بشكل مختلف عن ذلك .
ظننت في البداية انى سأجد ماتوقعت فها هو هنري شاريير المدعو بابيون أى الفراشة كما لُقب من البداية وقد تم إتهامه زوراً وحُكم عليه بالمؤبد ظلماً .
n  " في تمام الساعة الحادية عشرة ليلاً ، انتهت لعبة الشطرنج ، بعد أن قبل للمحامين المدافعين عني ( كش مللك ومات!) وتم الحكم علي وأنا برئ من التهمة." n

ليقرر منذ أول يوم أنه سيهرب من السجن بالتأكيد وانه سيعود للإنتقام ممن أودعوه بالسجن .
نتابع خططه المتكررة للهروب من السجن ونتعرف على من يحاول ضمهم اليه في الهروب ونعيش معه افكاره ومحاولاته بل ونشهد نجاح أول محاولة للهروب معه ومالاقاه في رحلة الهروب هو واصدقائه ومن إلتقي لهم .

نحيا مع بابيون كل الأحداث في السجن ونتعرف على الكثير من رفاقه هناك وحكاية كل منهم ، فالرواية نعم من وجهه نظره وعنه لكنه يحكي لنا قصص الكثير ممن يلتقيهم لنعرف سبب سجنهم واحكامهم وأشياء مما تحدث معهم . ونرى من خلال حكاياته سواء مما حدث معه او مما حدث للسجناء الآخرين المعاملة المهينة والسيئة والعنيفة في بعض الأحيان والمنعدمة الإنسانية تماما في أحيان اخري ، ونتابع مآسي الحبس الإنفرادي ، وكيفية التعامل مع جثث الأموات من المساجين حيث لايوجد مكان للدفن . وتعامل السجناء مع بعضهم البعض وخياراتهم في التعامل مع السجن .

لم أشاهد الفيلم بعد لكن هذه اللقطة من الحبس الإنفرادي ، اللحظة الوحيدة التي يستطيع السجين ان يري غيره وقد يتمكن من ان يتحدث بكلمتين إن كان سعيد الحظ.

اسلوب الرواية كان أسهل بكثير مما توقعت ، لا اعلم لماذا كان لدى إعتقاد أن لغة هذه الرواية وإسلوبها وطبيعتها ستكون أثقل من ذلك بكثير . لكن أسلوب الكاتب كان شيق .و الرواية عموماً كانت كما قلت في البداية رحلة ، تتخللها المغامرات والمخاطر والأحزان والأفراح والمواقف الطريفة والمبكية .

إصرار بابي على الهروب من السجن والحصول على حريته كان رائعا ، وتعامله مع حياته في السجن ورفاقه وطريقة تعامله ليتحمل عقوبة السجن الإنفرادي كانت ملهمة وجميلة لتثبت لنا أن الخيال أحيانا يستطيع إنقاذنا من الجنون والمعاناة . ( ده طبعا للناس اللى خيالها بيوديها لأفكار وخيال كويس ، مش جلد الذات اللى بعضنا واولهم انا بنعمله

O poveste fantastică. Imposibil să te plictisești pe parcursul celor peste 600 de pagini. Se întâmplă atât de multe lucruri încât ți se pare imposibil ca cineva să trăiască toate astea într-o singură viață. Dacă am învățat ceva de la Papillon ar fi ca niciodată să nu te dai bătut indiferent de circumstanțe, să speri, să gândești și să pui în aplicare imposibilul. Cât despre alegerea de a pleca de lângă persoanele iubite după ce a scăpat din “Iad” pentru a intra din nou în “Infern” cred că nimeni nu i-ar putea judeca alegerea cu adevărat. Cu toate că toți am făcut-o și probabil l-am “urât” pentru asta..
Această carte, din punctul meu, este un “must-read”..

It kinda drags too much for me. It has its interesting moments though. But in the end, I didn't care much.

Įdomi, įtraukianti ir verčianti stebėtis. Iš tiesų Drugeliui sekėsi, arba kai nesisekė, tai bent jau iš visų įmanomų blogybių jam nutikdavo mažiausiai bloga. Kad ir kur pakliūtų, jį gerbė, laikė autoritetu. Įdomu, kaip susiklostė jo gyvenimas po visko. Tačiau vietomis skaityti buvo sunkoka, nes labiau panešėjo į sausą faktų kratinį.

So fascinating, haunting; you feel the pain and ecstasy. No escape till the last page, you sail along all 'Cavale' with them.

Even though the author is silent all throughout the novel, on the plot of his conviction for murder in France except by saying that he was innocent, we really feel that he was really innocent. This, the author succeeds to prove through various instances in the novel. We also feel many occasions unbelievable where we see he is recognized instantly, and many show sympathy towards him which aids in his attempts for a ‘Cavale’

So fascinating is the narration of his experience in the island of Indian Hindus, where he finds an interesting life with two ‘wives’- sisters, who compete with each other to get pregnant, which they succeed in the end. But we see Papillon making his ‘Cavale’ from there, bidding goodbye to the island, that gets him another term of imprisonment and torture before he is released and made free in Venezuela after many years.

I read this book in the mid 70's, as a teenager. Then I read it again. And then, a little while later, I saw the film. The three events have subsequently blended into one, and I certainly now have difficulty differentiating the book from the film. But that's no big deal as I know the film followed the written narrative pretty closely. It's a true story of one man's battle against injustice and the terrible personal consequences that transpired.

It left a big impression on me. It was a big story. A huge adventure which I believed in entirely, though I now know some doubt has subsequently been levelled at the detail. It was also the largest book I'd taken on at this point - by far. Not only did it convince me of the power of a story, it also demonstrated to me that I could be transfixed by a tome so large it seemed impossible it would hold my interest long enough for me to finish it. When I look back to early 'adult' books I've read it's this one that stands out - read as I laid on my bed with a Rod Stewart cassette (Atlantic Crossing) playing in the background.

When the film was released, I know I doubted it could match the power of the book, but in my memory, it came close. I loved Hoffman and McQueen in the lead roles, and the scenes of solitary confinement seemed a perfect reflection of what I'd conjured up in my mind.

I'm not sure if I'll ever re-visit this tale of a Frenchman shipped off to a prison in French Guiana for a crime he claimed he didn't commit, as I wouldn't want to be disappointed by a second re-read. I think I'll just continue to treasure the untainted memory of my first memorable reading experience.

After watching the 1973 film starring Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman, I decided to read the autobiographical novel by Henri Charrière, Papillon. An inspiring story of a person's quest for freedom, of strength of spirit and belief in oneself.

By the way, while reading Papillon, I noticed that Stephen King's passage in Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption from 1982, "I asked for permission for 40 years. I couldn't squeeze out a drop without asking," miraculously resembles the one in Charrière's novel from 1969.

Spannende schelmenroman, lang geleden gelezen. Het speelt in Frans Guyana en het gaat over een spectaculaire ontsnapping uit een streng beveiligde gevangenis.Hij weet na veel avonturen de weg naar de vrijheid te vinden.

Never give up the fight, and that even when there seems no way out the way of the warrior, win or lose, is the correct way.
Books are such a wonderful thing that it teaches you all and me being very curious, we have become best friends now.
This was one of the best autobiographies I have ever read. The determination of papillon is beyond explanation. The tattoo on his chest of a papillon really meant something, he was never meant to be caged. An awesome journey, many things to learn from and will always remember him when I feel down as how he never gave up. A great read!

সে এক অ্যাডভেঞ্চার! এই অ্যাডভেঞ্চারের সাথে কোথায় লাগে রবিনসন ক্রুশো! প্যাপিলনের সাথে করে প্রায় অর্ধেক দুনিয়া ঘুরে বেড়িয়েছি। নির্জন দ্বীপ থেকে বিক্ষুব্ধ সাগর, বন্দীশিবির - কোথায় যাইনি।

প্যাপিলনের বন্দিদশা থেকে পালাতে গিয়ে বার বার ব্যর্থ হওয়ার সময় বার বার হতাশ হয়েছি। প্রতিবারই মনে হয়েছে এই বুঝি পালাল। অবশেষে অসহ্য দুঃখ-কষ্ট-যন্ত্রণা সহ্য করে যখন পালাতে সক্ষম হলো, তখন অ্যাডভেঞ্চারের মোটামুটি এক মহাকাব্য হয়ে গেছে। এই মহাকাব্য পড়ে বার বার শিউরে ওঠতে হয়।

লেখকের আত্মজীবনীমূলক দম বন্ধ করা এক বই! তেমনি দুর্দান্ত এক অনুবাদ।
