I feel like 3 stars is not fair, but it's just a different format that I didn't enjoy as much as typical biographies.
The book is basically interview peices brought together to share Payton's life. The author literally has the person's name followed by their testimony of their relationship with Walter Payton. He then pieces his life in 19 sections from start to end. Walter himself offers about 1/3 of the book and comes off as deep, loving and wide-eyed about people and the world. The author finds just the right balance between famous names and those who are less well-known and family to make it interesting. It's not my favourite biography, not written like some of my favourite biographers, but it's raw and does an amazing job of giving you a sense of Walter Payton and the (way too short) life he lived.
Walter died at the young age of 45 - very young and pretty near my age. You just never know. He was always looking for the lowest person in the room. He knew that he would have the biggest impact on them. It's about making others feel special. He used his celebrity to make others feel special. No wonder he was so loved.
