“The reality is that dying isn’t bad, but it takes forever. And that forever is no time at all. I know that sounds like a contradiction, or maybe just wordplay. What it really is, it turns out, is a matter of perspective.”
Another DFW in the books, and like all of his work, the ideas and themes that Wallace explores are as poignant and thought provoking as the narratives that propel them are bleak and disturbing. Particularly in a time of personal struggle, the bigger picture ideas of consciousness, oblivion, forgiveness and choosing what to pay attention to stuck out as especially profound. My favorite stories among the collection were The Suffering Channel, Good Old Neon, and Mr. Squishy. The Pale King is definitely in my future after completing this.
“The great myth is that the bad ones don’t last long.”
