❧ audiobook review

This is one Roald Dahl book I'd actually never heard of! I'm surprised, because it was written in 1985, but somehow it slipped past me until today. I didn't love it as much as Matilda, The Witches and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, but it's very cute in its own right! The audio book is narrated by Hugh Laurie, which I thoroughly recommend. He sings!

Also, the list of sweets at the end is an absolute delight! You can tell Dahl loves sweets, haha. Apparently he published a cookbook as well? What rock have I been living under? I really want to try some of his recipes now. I mean, the man who gave us The Chocolate Factory can only create epic dessert, surely? :D

Anyways, super cute book, definitely recommend.

Tema buku anak² ini lumayan lucu. Berkisah ttg seorang anak yg mengamati sebuah toko bekas toko permen. Suatu hari toko ini dibeli oleh 3 trio hewan unik, si Jerapah, si Pelly (Burung Pelikan) dan seekor monyet. Trio ini membuka usaha jasa membersihkan jendela. Hingga saat mrk bertemu dgn Duke of Hampshire, situasi mereka berubah selamanya.

Setelah mrk menolong sang Duke dari pencuri yg paling berbahaya, mereka semua mendapatkan apa yg selama ini mrk idam²kan.

Well, sayang sekali ceritanya singkat saja. Tapi lumayan menarik dan kocak jg sih.

What a great children's book. It really made me smile and laugh. I think it's better than "Fantastic Mr Fox" and "The Twits", which were also part of a Nestlé promotion with these books in their cereal packets. Not bad for freebies!
The last twenty-two pages were a lot of fun.
Roald Dahl has sold around 100 million books, and it's easy to see why. A percentage of his sales also go to charities.

What a book!

Reminds me of my childhood where simplicity and purity taking place.

A great memory!

“We have tears in our eyes
As we wave our goodbyes,
We so loved being with you, we three.
So do please now and then
Come and see us again,
The Giraffe and the Pelly and me.

"All you do is to look
At a page in this book
Because that’s where we always will be.
No book ever ends
When it’s full of your friends
The Giraffe and the Pelly and me.”

This was a cute story, and it even had a Willy Wonka mention at the end!
I think I like his longer format books better, even though the overall feeling is one that I would feel comfortable letting children read (I'm still not over Esio Trot's message of deceitfulness as a basis for true love).
I swear I'm done with the Roald Dahl books for the time being though!

Roald Dahl’s ‘The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me’ tells the story of a young boy named Billy and his dream to transform an old empty wooden house into a sweet shop that would consist of Sherbet Suckers, Caramel Fudge, Russian Toffee, Sugar Snorters and Butter Gumballs along with many many more different sweets. One day Billy, visited the shop and out of the corner of his eye Billy noticed one of the windows open and out of it appeared a Giraffe. Then a second and third window opened and out them appeared a Pelican and a Monkey. The three of them called themselves the Window cleaners. “We will polish your glass till its shining like brass and it sparkles like sun on the sea! We are quick and polite, we will come day or night, The Giraffe and the Pelly and me!” sang the Monkey.
The book itself is full of adventure and excitement. One day a great opportunity arose for the three of them from the one and only Duke of Hampshire (who was the richest man in England). He had been in search for a cleaning company that would be able to clean his six hundred and seventy seven windows (not counting the greenhouse). It was not long after that the three of them along with Billy made their way to Hampshire House. After a slight misunderstanding where the Duke believed the Pelican was trying to steal his cherries, whereas in actual fact he was picking them from the tree to give to the Duke himself, the Giraffe and the Pelly and Monkey and Billy began their work cleaning the Dukes windows. A positive message that the book portrays is that of helping others around you. This was particularly shown in the book when the pelican helped capture a burglar in his beak, who had planned to steal the Duchesses jewels (which were worth millions). As a token of gratitude to the group the Duke offered the Giraffe, Pelican and Monkey a home and anything they desired in exchange of them cleaning his windows. As for Billy, his dream of having his own sweet shop was no longer a dream but a reality.
The story is full of adventure, creativity and fun that any child will enjoy to read. In particular children in Key stage Two who would be able to use the rhymes, and use of poetry that are used within the book to help them when writing poems. The main positive themes of friendship with Billy and the animals and dreams coming true are something that children will be engaged in and want to read constantly over and over again. I would definitely recommend this book for Children to read especially if they are aware of the Roald Dahl collection because it provides so much content and positive messages that can help children later on in life.

Reflections and lessons learned: Marvellous children’s story with all elements working together, including nods to unusual sweets and chocolates. A great performance also adds to the ultimate joy…

Sep 24 update: This time with a narration by Noel Fielding - how does this bonkers tale suddenly sound more believable out of a mouth more used to nonsense…?!? Still fab though

Ah, Roald Dahl, the soundtrack of my childhood.

I’m fairly certain my entire generation picked up a Dahl book throughout their childhood. Dahl books are great for kids, made up of interesting events which capture the imagination. They’re the kind of books that you can look back on when you’re older and smile as you remember the events which played out, knowing that these are books you’re going to pass on to future generations.

In short, as a large part of my childhood, Dahl is a must read in my eyes for the wee ones.
