Roald Dahl was a British novelist, short story writer and screenwriter of Norwegian descent, who rose to prominence in the 1940's with works for both children and adults, and became one of the world's bestselling authors.

Dahl's first published work, inspired by a meeting with C. S. Forester, was Shot Down Over Libya. Today the story is published as A Piece of Cake. The story, about his wartime adventures, was bought by the Saturday Evening Post for $900, and propelled him into a career as a writer. Its title was inspired by a highly inaccurate and sensationalized article about the crash that blinded him, which claimed he had been shot down instead of simply having to land because of low fuel.

His first children's book was The Gremlins, about mischievous little creatures that were part of RAF folklore. The book was commissioned by Walt Disney for a film that was never made, and published in 1943. Dahl went on to create some of the best-loved children's stories of the 20th century, such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda and James and the Giant Peach.

He also had a successful parallel career as the writer of macabre adult short stories, usually with a dark sense of humour and a surprise ending. Many were originally written for American magazines such as Ladies Home Journal, Harper's, Playboy and The New Yorker, then subsequently collected by Dahl into anthologies, gaining world-wide acclaim. Dahl wrote more than 60 short stories and they have appeared in numerous collections, some only being published in book form after his death. His stories also brought him three Edgar Awards: in 1954, for the collection Someone Like You; in 1959, for the story "The Landlady"; and in 1980, for the episode of Tales of the Unexpected based on "Skin".

Billy, a young boy, comes across an old sweet shop which he dreams about renovating. Peering out the windows he finds a giraffe, pelican and monkey. Who are they, Billy wonders?! They are the world’s best window cleaning company of course! After working for the richest man in England, all of the members of the window cleaning company are rewarded individually; Billy’s reward is the purchase of the sweet shop he so long desired.

Throughout their short adventure the characters sing short, catchy songs which keep the reader entertained. The story is short and I would recommend this book for 6-8 year olds.

The story is full of description and imagination. This shines through when they are restocking the sweet shop. There are a number of sweets supplied by Willy Wonka, such as the electric fizzcocklers, which when described, represents Roald Dahl’s skill and ability at capturing children’s imagination through his story telling.

This book would be a great introduction to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, as it introduces Willy Wonka but does not mention anything else apart from the fact he makes sweets. This can therefore give children the opportunity to look at more books by one author and perhaps research the life and work by an author.

I just read a book named The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me, written by Roald Dahl and illustrated by Quentin Blake. The main characters are Billy a boy, the Duke the richest man in England, the Giraffe with a magic neck that can stretch terribly high, the Pelly who has a patented beak that can slide, and the Monkey who likes to eat walnuts. The book is written from the first person point of view.

At the beginning of the story, Billy really wanted to buy a house called the Grubber, which was once a sweet shop. If Billing could own the shop, he could make it into a sweet shop again. One day, when he came to look at the shop, lots of furniture came flying out of the windows, then three windows burst open and out came the head of a giraffe, a pelican and a monkey! They bought the house and made a Ladderless Window Cleaning Company.

In the middle of the story, they got to visit a very rich man called "the Duke", who hired them to clean all the windows in a huge house. When they cleaned the house, they caught the Cobra, the cleverest and most dangerous cat burglar in the world. As a reward, the Duke gave all the animals the food they like the best, and bought the Grubber so Billy can make it the best sweet shop in the world.

In the end, Bill invited all the friends to his shop, and gave them some special candies. My favorite part of the book is the special candies Billy gave to his friends. Especially when the monkey ate some Devil's Drenchers and then he could breathe a huge sheet of orange flames that shot up as high as the roof of the Grubber!

I really like this book and I will give it 5 stars.

I have to say this isn’t my favourite Roald Dahl story. Perhaps because it’s pretty short so it’s hard to really get into a fall in love with the character. However it’s worth reading, specially with children.

Dibanding dua buku lain yang kubaca barengan, ini tampaknya yang paling bisa dibaca Shasha tanpa mesti ditemenin. Hahaha. Tapi, jadinya biasa aja, nggak seimajinatif yang dua, meski tetap fantastis.

A silly little story devoid of much substance or character. This may be among my least favorite of Roald Dahl's children's books.
