রোয়াল ডাল আমার অতি প্রিয় শিশুতোষ লেখক। তার লেখা মাটিল্ডা পড়ে খিল খিল করে হেসেছি , বাচ্চাটার মা বাবার উপর মেজাজ খারাপ হয়েছে । তা সাজেশন থেকে প্রথমে এই বইটাই শুরু করলাম । এই গল্পটা এক সিংগেল ফাদার এবং তার ছেলের। ৯ বছরের ড্যানির গল্প । গাড়ির মেকানিক বাবা তার ছেলে ড্যানিকে নিয়ে আপেল গাছের নিচের এক জিপসি ক্যারাভ্যানে থাকেন সামনেই তার গাড়ি ঠিকঠাক করার দোকান । মা বিহীন ড্যানি কে বড় করছে বাবা , বাবা হল ড্যানির আসল হিরো। একটু বড় হবার পর ড্যানির সাথে পরিচয় ঘটে বিরক্তিকর মি .হ্যাজেলের সাথে। হামবড়া এই মানুষটাকে সবাই অপছন্দ করে , এবং আশে পাশের মানুষের প্রিয় কাজ এই মি হ্যাজের বাগানে গিয়ে ফিজেন্ট শিকার করা :) ড্যানির গাড়ি চালিয়ে বাবাকে উদ্ধারের ঘটনা যথেষ্ট ভাল। পুরো বই জুড়ে আছে ডালের হিউমার।

তাই বইটা পড়েই মজা পাবেন। এমনকি বড়রাও । শেষের ম্যাসেজটা অসাধারন সুন্দর সুন্দর ।

এই বইটার অন্যতম ভাল দিক হল ডালের অন্য সব বইয়ের মত মাত্রারিক্ত শিশুতোষ না। এইটা ছোটবেলার মেমরি যেটা বড় বেলায় এসে মুগ্ধতার আবেশই তৈরি করে। বাবা ছেলের কথোপকথন অসাধারন।

সমস্যা যেটা সেটা বিশাল লেভেলের – এনিমেল পোচিং আমার অতি অপ্রিয় কাজ একটা বাচ্চার বাপ সেটাকে এক্সসাইটিং মনে করছে, পুরো এলাকা সুদ্ধ মানুষ সেটায় জড়িত জিনিসটা মানতে পারছি না। 

ডালের বইতে সব সময়ই সুন্দর সব ইলাস্ট্রেশন থাকে এইটায় ও আছে তবে আমার ততটা ভাল লাগে নি ।

Despite having read pretty much all of Roald Dahl's other books, I had not read this one until recently. I don't know why. It was hugely popular when I was in second and third grade, but among the boys, and I had sort of dismissed it as a "boy's book." It is in fact a wonderful, lyrical book, some of Dahl's best writing. And it's not just a heart-warming tale of a boy and his father. Nope. It's a how-to for poaching pheasants. Brilliant.

Update 2018: Read it aloud to the kids. We loved every page! Kids do prefer a parent who is SPARKY!

Before the dystopian hit The Road, there was another father-son relationship hit, but for another audience altogether.

This funny, witty and charming children's novel is a pleasure to read.

Danny the Champion of the World is a win for the working class. Danny loves life and sees the riches in it rather than his poverty stricken surroundings. The objective reality is that they live in a caravan and just scrape by with the barest essentials, yet through the eyes of Danny, life is splendid: he's a mechanic at only nine years of age and he has a fabulous story-teller of a father.

Danny unravels his father’s secret. And together they set out on a wonderful escapade of pheasant snatching. It's a story of courage, wisdom and the deep connection that can exist between a parent and a child.

A wonderful children's novel. Up there with the very best - but aren't most of Dahl's stories?

This is Not one of Dahl's funny books but outstanding story-telling all the same. A boy and his father poach pheasants from a greedy land-owner and invent a scheme to completely humiliate him and get one up on him. Full of exciting scenes of danger.

Funny little story where you are waiting for what will happen next and how will that go. Great story!

Una historia sencilla, pero llena de mensajes. La relación de Danny con su papá es muy bonita, se siente el cariño que se tienen y lo mucho que se preocupan el uno del otro. El padre se parte en cuatro para que a su hijo no le falte nada y Danny percibe cosas que los otros chicos del pueblo no ven.
Este libro quizá se pierda un poco entre fabricas de chocolates, duraznos y brujas, pero vale totalmente la pena darle una oportunidad.

There is a certain unmatched charm to any of Roald Dahl's books, even the bad ones. Luckily, this is one of the better stories. It perfectly captures the wonder and excitement that is childhood. If you had an amazing dad, this will make you remember him fondly and if you didn't, you will find yourself wishing things were different. This is clearly a love letter in novel form to Dahl's dad and all dads that ever existed. I found the concept that everyone in town had a naughty side adorable. I'd definitely read this one to my kids.

This is one of my favourite Roald Dahl books. It's simply the story of a boy, Danny, and his father, who is a pheasant poacher. That's it. It's one of his least crazy books and doesn't involve magic at all. Admittedly there is a huge madcap caper at the end, but it never truly pushes the boundaries of believability.

The story deals with all sorts of problems that children have growing up, including school and bullying and it's as relevant now as it was when it was written (apart form the use of corporal punishment in schools, thank god). It's also incredibly cosy reading. Danny and his dad live in an old gypsy caravan underneath an apple tree out the back of their garage. They have a gaslamp for lighting and a small stove and bunk beds. See? So cosy.

This book also taught me several methods for poaching pheasants and trout. Which obviously I would never do.

Deze is me voorgelezen als kind. Ik herinnerde me heel vaag nog wat dingen, maar vooral één beeld: een hele zwerm fazanten op een benzinepomp. Ik dacht eerst dat ik het me verbeeldde, maar uiteindelijk kwam het tóch terug. Dat was leuk :) en het hele boek was leuk. Met humor, fantasie, spanning en gewoon heel zorgvuldig/goed verteld!

یه بابای این شکلی میخواستم

خوشحال بودم که پدرم با چشم‌هایش می‌خندید، چون معنی‌اش این بود که او هیچ‌وقت به من لبخند ساختگی نمی‌زد. اگر کسی با تمام وجود شاد نباشد، نمی‌تواند کاری کند که چشم‌هایش بخندند.
