This is one of the very few books by Roald Dahl that I hadn't read before, and I'm so glad I didn't miss out on it! It's a brilliant story about the loving relationship between Danny and his father.

Also, it includes detailed instructions on how to poach pheasants.

I love the way the main point of the story is summed up in a note to young readers at the very end: "A stodgy parent is no fun at all! What a child wants and DESERVES is a parent who is SPARKY!"

This is perhaps Dahl's most tedious novel.
The beginning is nice. About Danny growing up with his father at a fuel station mechanic in an old gypsy caravan. Then from chapter four, Danny discovers his dad's deepest secret. He is a pheasant poacher. What follows is Danny and his dad poaching pheasants.
Yawn!
Also why is The BFG storyline randomly in there as a chapter? Strange way to cross promote.
It seems like Dahl phoned this one in...

Beautiful reminder of my childhood through an innocent, heartwarming story.

re-read for the autumn vibes (i’m not sure how many times I read it as a kid) and coincidentally the main part of the action takes place on the same days of the year that I ended up reading it XD very nostalgic!

Oddly to some, this still stands as my favorite Roald Dahl book. It's hard for me to pinpoint why, since it's my opinion and I hate examining my opinions too closely, but to take a swing at it:
It's one of the least zany of Dahl's books, which ultimately gives it staying power. With many of his other works, you get caught up in the wacky characters, situations, and goings ons and it's hard to take them as seriously once you get a little bit older and gain a little bit of sophistication. However, DTCOTW (wow, won't be writing that again) contains some of Dahl's best pure writing as the author beautifully and at times almost lyrically describes the relationship between Danny and his father.
I think this book very often gets overlooked and I think that's a shame, because it's so very good.

Reading a book out loud is very different to reading it in your head. Characters escape through your mouth rather than infiltrating your eyes. I heartily recommend it from time to time.

3,5 stars.

I won't be writing a full review for Danny The Champion Of The World... I've been slowly going through the books of one of my favorite childhood authors, Roald Dahl, rereading old favorites as well as some stories I missed when I was little. I did read Danny The Champion Of The World a couple times when I was little, and although it's not my favorite I remember still enjoying the story quite a lot. It's not as fantastical as some of his other stories, but I liked the relationship between father and son and the 'secret' and creative poaching ideas. It's definitely a fun story for kids to read.
