One of the more unknown of Dahl's stories and one I hadn't actually heard of before, but then I'm not so well versed in Roald Dahl's works as I always thought I was.

It's a good storyline with a lovely moral, but still quite simplified and I think maybe more could have been made of it. Perhaps, because of the theme of guns and hunting, it needed to be shorter for a children's book. It was written much like his others, so there is not much to compare with, but it lacked the whimsy and grace as his others.

In three words: endearing, funny, quick.

“‘Oh, that Magic Finger!’ I cried. 'What has it done to my friends?’"

I hunted for a Roald Dahl book to read for September (in anticipation of Roald Dahl Day on the author’s birthday, 13 September), and ended up finding The Magic Finger at home, tucked away on a rather neglected bookshelf.

This book tells the tale of a little girl with a Magic Finger; when she gets angry, her Magic Finger flashes and the person (or people) her anger is directed at get punished. In this story, the people who get punished are her neighbours, the Greggs - they hunt animals, which the narrator doesn’t agree with at all.

This book is incredibly short, so it’s a really fast read. Overall, it’s very enjoyable - it’s such a ridiculous and funny tale, and the moral of the story is great. Compared to what I remember of Dahl favourites like Matilda and George’s Marvellous Medicine though, The Magic Finger doesn’t have a lot of depth and it was over far too quickly for the story to have much impact on me.

Recommended for: people looking for a quick-to-read and fun children’s tale with a good moral.

Fun, sassy, typical Dahl. However this book also had a deeper message about hunting and doing unto others, etc. I really enjoyed it.

This is a story about a girl who has a magic finger. Whenever she gets upset her finger begins to hurt and ends up casting a spell on the person who upset her. In this story it ends up being these brothers she's friends with and their dad. She ends up putting a spell on them and then things become fun.

I have to say it was a very cute short story. I really enjoyed this one. I loved everything that happened after the spell was casted on her friends and their family. It was very silly but I thought it was a fun concept.

If you're a fan of Roald Dahl I would recommend it. It's short and won't take you that long to read. It's very quick and is funny.
