Awakening! Frightening! Gripping! - none of these words even come close to describing Mary Baxter's journey into The Abyss. This book will surely leave readers - including Atheist ones - crying out for the Great Proprietor! I, of course, am a firm believer in the literal interpretation of Hell. In the Bible Job 18:15, it says, "Brimstone shall be scattered upon his habitation" - Job is the oldest book in the Bible, written over 3,000 years ago, and yet Job knew what science wouldn't know for years...inside this earth is Brimstone!
Yes, I really recommend this book for not only Christians who are weak in their faith, but also for non-believers because I hope it shall implant some sense into them.
May I also say: Baxter repeatedly stresses the authenticity of her experience throughout the pages, and as she is an ordained Minister, I doubt she would lie about something as serious as this. I do indeed believe this is genuine.
It reeks of sensationalism, not of revelation. It upholds biblical truths, but also introduces many unnecessarily gory expositions, that will entice gasps and ensure book sales, but not necessarily bring people closer to God. In fact, I have seen some fall into terror and disgust thanks to this book, rather than repentance, faith, and love for God.
I bought this book because it was recommended by someone that had supernatural and demonic experiences and testimony with psychedelic drugs. I myself had experiences like that, so I had interest in listening what others had to say from their experiences. But either these things are very different for each individual, and extremely hard to discern, or there is also some degree of lying and/or deception involved.
I do not know if Mary K. Baxter has genuine saving faith, if she is a signs-and-wonders idolater; only God knows her heart and her personal challenges. But I do believe this book comes from a place between her personal imagination, and a general understanding of the gospel.
Who knows, maybe she even thinks she is doing us a favor, by claiming to have received direct revelation, so that then maybe many shall believe. But I suspect this book does more harm than good, and paints us Christians as mere crazy mystics chasing after visions, rather than lovers in reverence of the one true God.
From an artistic perspective, taking the book as if it were a work of fiction, it is also quite repetitive. The suffering, torture, and putridness of it all is shocking, but in a distasteful cheap kinda way. If you want darkness and supernatural shock, go read H.P. Lovecraft instead. If you want imaginative explorations of what hell might look like, go read Dante’s Inferno, or C.S. Lewis’ The Great Divorce. Those are great literature, and make no false pretenses of being special revelation.
It's hard to really critique a book like this like this without knowing the author personally. Mainly because it's a personal testimony of visions and out of body experiences shes had. Who but the author can really speak to its accuracy and veracity? We are only left with scripture as a guide and the warnings in Revelation which warns us not to add to the biblical text to hold next to this manuscript. I will say, it really differs in theology eschatologically speaking concerning N.T. Wrights perspective on a millennial reign and earth being ours as an inheritance. I'm not saying Wright is flawless in his theology but I will say it would take a lot to challenge his views given he's one of the most brilliant minds the church has in this day and age. Where the book shines is conviction and a dramatic call to continually live your life before God with an eternal perspective in mind. This book isn't the most academic, or even theologically rich, but it is written, in my estimation, from a pure heart and is worth a read by every serious Christian minister, scholar or educator. The promotion of a supernatural worldview is sorely lacking in the Western World and the text does much to promote a healthy respect of the mysterious, and mystical part of our Christian faith. 3 out of 5 stars.
Have you heard of scared straight? Mary details of hell make you want to live right. Her graphic details are so real you know this is not where you want to be for eternity.
Excellent must read for both believers and non-believers. The reality of hell is much too awful. We need to know the truth, and the truth we know can set us free. Hell is horrible, and we need to save as many as possible. This book made the scripture come alive more inside of me. It helped me to see a bigger picture and reality of the words I read in the Bible.
Truly horrifying. I thank Mary K. Baxter for her obedience and willingness to share her experience openly. (You can download or listen to this book for free from her website.) As God's word says, "[As] I live, saith the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways..." (Ezekiel 33:11) There is much evil in this world, but I must remember to continually pray for the wicked and the lost so they are sent to this place of indescribable horror. I hope this book leads all of its readers into deep repentance and intercession for those who do not know Jesus Christ.
I recently found a copy of this for a $1, I originally read this in 2006, along with 23 minutes in hell. Weird how when people supposedly go to heaven or hell, they all see different things... The only thing in this book I can get behind is it's message of the necessity of salvation and the certainty of an eternal torment if we reject Christ and refuse to ask him for forgiveness of our sins. However, go to her website, it is linked in her author bio, and you will find this:
"Divine Healing Training The John G. Lake ministry has over 1 million recorded healings, & has trained over 40,000 people in the healing ministry; correcting many misconceptions about Healing. Please listen, learn & Get to Work!"
John G. Lake was a complete fraud; one that Pentecostals still claim healed thousands... Without proof. There is a lot to show, however, along with James Alexander Dowey, that he was a complete fraud. Her website also promotes the bizarre book "The Final Quest" by Rick Joyner, as well as the completely fraudulent Bob Larson. These people all promote eachother, whether it C. Peter Water, Cindy Jacobs, James Goll, etc, they all promote a bizarre unbiblical theology where extrabiblical experience is emphasized. She was also on Sid Roth' It's Supernatural https://www.sidroth.org/television/tv... . Honestly, I think that is a great interview because I do truly believe Mary Kay Baxter believes what she says, her body language indicates it, I am not sure what induced these visions, if not acid, I don't know. However sincere she is, this does not make it true.
The silliness of this book cannot be emphasized enough. The book says that Satan and his angels will be torturing people, but this makes no since since the Bible is clear that the lake of fire was created for Satan and his minions originally, they will suffer the same as others, they are not in charge of hell, on that alone, I know this book is false. Not too mention the many bizarre tortures it claims exist there, which is strange because Jesus simply talks about the Lake of Fire, which again is for Satan and his minions, but also for you and me if we do not turn to Christ for the forgiveness of our sins, we have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. Yes, we all need saving. This is the one good thing I can say about this book and Mary K Baxter, she does point back to Christ and tell people they will suffer eternal torment if they do not ask forgiveness of the their sins. However, this doe snot justify what she says here because it is almost all false. This is no more real than the book "The Boy Who Came Back from Heavy", which was recanted by the boy who supposedly came back from heaven Alex Malarkey(oddly fitting name). If you think this is the only book that lied, well, you'de be wrong.
I've also read 23 minutes in Hell, and that book is also bogus as well. I these people are sincere, but they clearly had some bizarre dream or hallucination. There is no other logical explanation.
Great book. I had to deal with all the trickery of the Kingdom of Hell and all their false light prophets , false Christ Prophets like Krishna, Hermes, Horus and the False Main God's Like Enka, RA, Amun, Zeus, Mithra, Jupiter, Brahma and etc, I had to learn the hard way of the great trickery beyond belief of Hells organization, and how literally 99% of people fall prey to them, the Kingdom of Hell will used Razzle Dazzle magic in these false heavenly states of higher consciousness to seduce the soul, entice, and manipulation the universe space time continuum to make people think they are in heaven or found God but in actuality found Hell and Satan...all types of drugs and psydelellics like DMT, ayahuasca, magic mushrooms, LSD, peyote is all of hell, do not fooled by these alien beings, ufo orders or telepathy powers or channeling, it is all of hell. The only way to ascend is with Jesus and only Jesus , and in this book I found a great thing it mentioned in this book, The Kidngdom of hell is design like a huge dark heart beating, and I have seen this dark beating heart before andI found out the hard way King RA and Lucifer where beyond it..the only way is with Jesus
