I've rated this book based on my son's rating it. One son gave it a 2.5. He didn't care for the mild violence and war peril. His brother, rated it 4.5. He, unlike his brother, finds interest in the Revolutionary War and historical fiction, especially those set in war time.

I read this book aloud to my sons as part of our homeschool lessons. It's a great book for boys as it is filled with adventure. There is, however, mild violence as soldiers are killed or die from hardships of war. Even, I shed a few tears while reading this. This book depicts those hard times as realistically as possible for young readers and even we adults can appreciate the sacrifice that was given to ensure our freedoms.

I really liked this. I know it's a kids book but it was good. I've been to Washington's Crossing and I could picture that while reading this. This would have been ideal to read with my boys when they were in school

A fun time travel series that starts out here when Matt, Tony, Hooter and Q form an adventure club where, as Mat explains "they meet and talk about real adventures that people have had throughout history". They are going to start with George Washington's crossing of the Delaware River. They are going to read about the crossing during a camp-out in the back yard. In Matt's rush to finish his dinner (and not eat his pea's) his younger sister Katie catches him dumping pea's into the sugar bowl. The only way to stop his sister from telling on him is to invite her along to the camp-out.
In this series the children are transported back in time via a magic row boat. Here they end up crossing the Delaware with Washington's troops. They learn of some of the hardships of both the times in general and of war in particular.

9/14/2018:
This was a book that got better as it progressed. I wasn't too impressed by the first several chapters; the deceit, attitudes, and justifying of poor choices bugged me. But then the kids started reaping the consequences of their actions and it kept looking like they were learning some lessons about integrity, trust, and honoring their parents/loving their siblings. The part of the story where they were all thrust into the Revolutionary War was fascinating and showed a bit of both sides of the story. By the end, we see so much growth in the main character that I thought he was going to come clean in the end. It very nearly turned out that way, but not quite.

I think this would be a good book for discussion not just for the historical aspect, but also to explore character strengths and weaknesses.

Note: there was swearing by a soldier partway through the story.

Cole and I slogged our way through this one. I like the concept of fantasy/historical fiction. However, this book misses the mark for engaging youths. There are too many main characters plus too many secondary characters. I understand that it was about the Revolutionary War, but it was still quite violent including two deaths.

Summary: This interesting story follows a group of children who find a mysterious boat on the lake that takes them back in time to George Washington's camp during the revolutionary war.
Evaluation: The story was told wonderfully through this book. The chapters were short as to not be drawn out and lose student's attention. And the fact that the book is written about one of America's most well-known men also keeps students engaged.
Teaching Ideas: Teachers could use this text to map out a timeline of the American Revolutionary War from the stand point of George Washington and his troops. Students can also write a written response to the question of "Would you stay with George Washington's army during the winter of 1776?" And let students decide, based on the book, and what they learned in social studies.

This book is based on five kids and are decided to go on an adventure to the dam in the woods. they got there and fell under a spell and they went back to revolutionary war, WHAT WILL HAPPEN? This book reminded me of the magic tree house when all of them went on a trip on in the future. Also it reminded me of back to the future because they are being sucked back in time. When they go on the adventure to the dam it reminded me of my self when i was little trying to be all brave. Finally it reminded me of my friends acting brave. The little sister is like my little sister trying to hang with the big kids. I would definitely recommend this book.
