This was a re-read, even if I just read it a year ago it felt like it was forever ago I read it. The idea sounds interesting but find this to be one of the dullest and dustiest classics I've read upon a reread. Not my cup of tea

3.5 stars. Ivanhoe was one of the first classics I tried to read I few years ago and failed misearble, but now when I'm much more invested in classics I decided to give it a try. It's an good story but one of those classics that feels much a fiction of its time and not as timeless as some other, bit overall I did enjoy it but wasn't anything amazing about it.

Din punct de vedere al gradului de divertisment, ,,Ivanhoe" este exact ce promite, o carte distractivă, plină de acțiune, cu lupte eroice între cavaleri, turniruri, asedii și orice îți poți imagina când te gândești la Evul Mediu și la cavaleri, însă romanul suferă la caracterizare.
Toate personajele pozitive au aproape exclusiv trăsături pozitive, iar personajele negative au aproape exclusiv trăsături negative. Nu avem personaje cu adevărat complexe și niciun personaj nu are un profil psihologic cu adevărat dezvoltat, accentul cade atât de mult pe acțiune încât personajele sunt șterse.
Avantajul lui Walter Scott este că utilizează personaje consacrate ca Robin Hood, Prințul John și Regele Richard Inimă-de-Leu, care sunt atât de emblematice, încât sunt interesante fără prea multă muncă din partea autorului, însă chiar și aceștia sunt cam personaje de carton.
Un aspect care ridică valoarea romanului îl reprezintă comentariile cu privire la situația evreilor în Evul Mediu. Suntem atât de obișnuiți să citim despre crimele naziștilor, încât adesea uităm că antisemitismul și prejudecățiile față de poporul evreu sunt o boală veche. Walter Scott reușește să prezinte toată situația într-un mod care reflectă epoca respectivă, dar care nu îi nedreptățește pe evrei, deci aici are un plus.
În ansamblu, ,,Ivanhoe" este un roman istoric distractiv, genul de carte de aventuri care cu siguranță m-ar fi încântat mai mult la o vârstă mai fragedă, dar merită să fie citit, însă fără a-și găsi loc printre capodoperele omenirii.



English review: This is the first story I've read with Robin Hood as a supporting character and, given that everyone knows his story by heart, I'm surprised he isn't used in this way more often.
In terms of entertainment, "Ivanhoe" is exactly what it promises, a fun, action-packed book with heroic battles between knights, jousting, sieges and anything else you can imagine when you think of the Middle Ages and knights, but the novel suffers at characterization.
All the positive characters have almost exclusively positive traits and the negative characters have almost exclusively negative traits, we don't have any truly complex characters and no character has a truly developed psychological profile, the focus falls so much on action that the characters are kind of bland.
Walter Scott's advantage is that he uses established characters like Robin Hood, Prince John and King Richard the Lionheart, who are so iconic that they are interesting without much work on the author's part, but even these are pretty much cardboard characters.
One aspect that raises the novel's value is the commentary on the plight of Jews in the Middle Ages; we are so used to reading about the crimes of the Nazis that we often forget that anti-Semitism and prejudice against Jewish people is an old disease. Walter Scott manages to present the whole situation in a way that reflects the era, but does not unfairly portray the Jews, so here he has a plus.
Overall, "Ivanhoe" is an entertaining historical novel, the kind of adventure book that certainly would have thrilled me more at a younger age. It deserves to be read, but without finding its place among the masterpieces of mankind.

Su obra está influida por varios romances y baladas de Inglaterra y Escocia medieval, que fueron reinventadas por su pluma con un profundo conocimiento de la historia y el alma humana. Sus primeros trabajos, poemas y odas, dieron paso a una serie de novelas históricas ambientadas en Escocia, conocidas como el ciclo de Waverley, que le dieron reconocimiento y fama. Es “Ivanhoe”, escrita y publicada en 1819, la novela que lo lleva al prestigio internacional, alcanzando traducciones y lectores a nivel global hasta nuestras fechas. Ivanhoe supuso un parteaguas en la producción narrativa de Scott y en la literatura universal; a partir de ese momento, el autor británico abordó motivos ingleses con destreza y erudición, a la par que sus novelas se convirtieron en paradigma para varios autores emergentes. La obra está ambientada en el Siglo XII, durante el reinado de Ricardo Corazón de León, cuyo incierto paradero propició intrigas en la corte lideradas por su hermano Juan sin Tierra. Wilfrid de Ivanhoe fue uno de los leales caballeros de Ricardo, que, al regreso de las Cruzadas, buscó restablecerlo en el poder al tiempo que perseguía el perdón de su padre, Cedric el sajón. Según los críticos, la novela es una obra maestra porque Scott tuvo un amplio dominio del periodo histórico en donde transcurre la acción, que le permitió ser fiel a los caracteres de los personajes históricos y a las costumbres, sentimientos y vestimenta de la época.

La novela nos permite conocer las diferencias entre Sajones y Normandos, los primeros, habitantes originales de las Islas, fueron derrotados en la batalla de Hastings, cuando el ejército normando de Guillermo II de Normandía venció y conquistó los territorios de las huestes del rey Harold de Inglaterra. El argumento de Ivanhoe parte de la rivalidad entre vencedores y vencidos, los primeros orgullosos y arrogantes caballeros, los segundos altivos y honorables campesinos. Esta mezcla permitió la creación del inglés moderno y la configuración cultural de los anglosajones. La pugna religiosa es otro aspecto del contexto de Ivanhoe: cristianos, judíos y sarracenos mantenían su distancia, fuertes prejuicios y estigmas satanizaban a unas y a otras gentes: los judíos fueron considerados una raza sin nación, un pueblo sin honor y miserable, dedicado a la extorsión y la usura, acaudalados hijos de Abraham enfrentados a los cristianos desde aquel Mesías muerto en la cruz. En este escenario deambulan cantidades de personajes, señores y vasallos, clérigos y monjes, escuderos y caballeros, doncellas y princesas, porquerizos y bufones. Un verdadero universo de seres y costumbres que cimientan el estereotipo moderno de la imaginería medieval retratado en series y películas.

Scott es pionero e innovador, toma escenas y retablos del folklor inglés para insertarlos en una narración absorbente, dando vida y continuidad a un sinfín de motivos caballerescos: diálogos intrépidos, palpitantes, corteses y heroicos, enfrentamientos y batallas a caballo, torneos, juicios, tomas de castillos, situaciones inesperadas, valerosas, audaces y cómicas, con un sentido del humor que utiliza la ironía, el contraste y el ridículo. Algunos de los personajes resaltantes: Wamba (mi personaje favorito) el bufón que desenmascara las apariencias con su velo de locura, el más cuerdo, el más gracioso, el más pintoresco; Gurth el porquerizo, valiente, prudente y leal, extraordinario vasallo convertido en hombre libre; Cedric el sajón, líder espiritual de la causa sajona, conservó el anhelo de revivir a su raza de entre las cenizas; Lady Rowena, inteligente, pura y bella, descendiente de sangre real sajona, no se dejará vencer por las intrigas y complicaciones; Isaac de York, usurero judío que se frota las manos ofreciendo sus préstamos a todas las facciones; Rebeca, hija de Isaac, hermosa joya de las arenas orientales, cautiva de su religión y de su velo, bruja y curadora, amor imposible de caballeros y templarios; el desconocido Caballero Negro, cabalgando misterioso en busca de justicia y de aventuras; el arquero Locksley, líder de bandidos y monteros en los bosques; el fraile Thuck; el templario Brian de Bois Guibert; el prior Aymer; de Bracy y Waldemar Fitzurse mano derecha y mano izquierda de Juan sin Tierra, en la política y en las armas; entre otros. Una constelación de personajes variopintos y diversos que representa todas, o casi todas, las ocupaciones y las clases sociales de la Inglaterra medieval y que sirvieron de modelo para posteriores trabajos, basta decir: “canción de hielo y fuego”.

Otro punto alto de Ivanhoe es su ameno, fiable y locuaz narrador, una figura literaria que envuelve a los lectores en las tramas y los ambientes, que te toma de la mano, te coloca un yelmo, un escudo, una espada y un garrote, para llevarte a cabalgar a través del tiempo y del espacio. Los lances entre caballeros, los diálogos e intrigas cortesanas, la divertidísima cena del Caballero Negro y el clérigo de San Dunstan, el palpitante triángulo amoroso, los arqueros en los bosques, entre otros; constituyen momentos eternos en la literatura y en la cultura occidental de este y todos los tiempos. Ivanhoe es una novela universal por su capacidad de penetrar en los recovecos humanos, por mostrar las luces y sombras, las ambiciones, los sueños, el honor, el coraje, la valentía y el drama de una época remota e hidalga; por humanizar la historia con una mirada que reconcilia diferencias, que integra distintas ideas y que propone la resolución de conflictos en la tierra y no en el cielo. Ivanhoe es aventura sin fin.

Llevaba muchisimos años sin leer una novela con tonos fantásticos y he disfrutado como una niña de esta lectura. A pesar de tratar temas morales no es una novela pesada, lo cuál ha sido un gran alivio como estudiante de filologia. No le he dado 5 estrellas porque el final me ha decepcionado bastante, no por lo que pasa sino por como esta hecho. Walter Scott termina la novela de forma muy repentina y da la sensación de que decidió terminar la novela antes de lo que tenía planeado. A pesar de esto es un libro que he disfrutado mucho como una lectura ligera entre otras mas complejas, que suelen tener un mayor peso en nuestra mente (refiriendome a que impactan y repercuten en la forma que sentimos o pensamos y resultan en ciertas emociones quizás negativas)

A glorious story of knights and ladies, jousts and castles and great feats.

I grew up on the Anthony Andrews/Lisette Anthony movie, with Sam Neill doing his best smolder as Sir Brian DuBois Gilbert and Olivia Hussey looking like a Biblical illumination as Rebecca. The original version of the book that I had, a crappy paperback picked up for probably fifty cents, had a nevertheless great introduction that, among other things, explained that the true hero of the book is Richard the Lionheart, returning to free his kingdom from Prince John's tyranny, and the true heroine is Rebecca, standing up for her beliefs and willing to give up the love of her life because it's the right thing for both of them. Understanding that gives you a true appreciation of this story, which I think might otherwise make you try (and fail) to see Wilfred and Rowena as romantic ideals who . . . honestly spend a lot of time locked in bedrooms. (And not in a sexy way.)

Sigh! It’s a classic... but I just couldn’t get over the textbook-like detail to everything Medieval! The clothes, the armor, the horse, the-you-name-it, each had way too many dry sentences written about them, covering every minuscule line item you could possibly come up with. Not enough of a story narrative to keep me interested. I was so bored. If you liked it, I'm sorry! Leave me a comment about why you liked it so much and I'll try it again.

I read this ages ago. But at the time I was absolutely entranced by this novel. It has knights and rogues, romance and adventure, Templars (they are evil here) and Robin Hood crew. Yes, the plot is a bit naive and characters are black & white. But this is a charming novel with lots of heart to it. If you are 12 - beg, borrow or steal yourself a copy (but try begging and borrowing first).

The Classic book worth reading.

Yes, the story, or rather the medieval world shown in "Ivanhoe" wasn't nice. Full of prejudice and violence.

It was an interesting point of view and a gripping (also witty) way of storytelling. A romantic adventure at its best.

বঙ্কিমচন্দ্রের 'দুর্গেশনন্দিনী' এর বিরুদ্ধে প্ল্যাজিয়ারিজমের গুরুতর অভিযোগ উঠেছিলো। সেই সময় বলা হয়েছিলো যে স্যার ওয়াল্টার স্কটের 'আইভ্যানহো' নভেল নকল করে বঙ্কিম তাঁর বিখ্যাত 'দুর্গেশনন্দিনী' লিখেন।

তৎকালিন বিভিন্ন বোদ্ধা ব্যক্তি বঙ্কিমের পক্ষে অবস্থান নেন। বিভূতিভূষণ বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায় 'আইভ্যানহো' বাংলায় অনুবাদ করে ফেলেন বঙ্কিমকে কলঙ্কমুক্ত করার উদ্দেশ্যে।

মূল লেখক ওয়াল্টার স্কট সাহিত্যিক হিসেবে নিজ জীবনকালেই আন্তর্জাতিকভাবে খ্যাতিপ্রাপ্ত হন। মজার ব্যাপার হচ্ছে তাঁর লিখা বিখ্যাত অনেক উপন্যাস সম্পর্কে তিনি নিজেই সন্দিহান ছিলেন। তাই রচনা করেছিলেন এসব নভেল বেনামে। ওয়েভার্লি নভেল হিসেবে এ সকল উপন্যাস এখনো পরিচিত।

মিডিয়্যাভাল ইংল্যান্ডের উপন্যাস 'আইভ্যানহো'। সহৃদয়, বীর রাজা রিচার্ডের প্যালেস্টাইন যু*দ্ধে অংশগ্রহনের সুযোগে তাঁর ভাই প্রিন্স জন প্রাসাদ ষড়যন্ত্রে লিপ্ত হন। ১৬ শতকের ইংল্যান্ডে এরকম তীব্র দ্বন্দ্বে প্যাঁচে পড়ে যান ভূস্বামী স্যাকশস সেড্রিক, তাঁর পালক কন্যা লেডি রাওএনা, তাঁর অনুগত দাস গার্থ এবং আরেকজন দাস ভাঁড় ওয়াম্বা। জীবন-সংহারী বিপদ নেমে আসে একজন ইহুদী আইজাক এবং তাঁর কন্যা রেবেকা‌র উপর।

প্যালেস্টাইনের যু*দ্ধে উত্তরাধিকার-বঞ্চিত আইভ্যানহো অফ উইলফ্রেড গিয়েছেন। পিতা স্যাকসন সেড্রিকের সাথে আইভ্যানহোর মূল দ্বন্দ্ব-ই হলো রাওএনাকে নিয়ে। কারণ গোত্রগত রাজনৈতিক সমীকরণের কারণে সেড্রিক চান রাওএনার সাথে এথেলস্টেনের বিয়ে হোক। কিন্তু আইভ্যানহো এবং লেডি রাওএনার মধ্যে সৃষ্ট অনুরাগ সেড্রিক স্যাকসনকে এতটা নিষ্ঠুর করেছে পুত্রের প্রতি।

উপন্যাসে মধ্যযুগের ইংল্যান্ডের বিভিন্ন ধর্মীয় গোড়ামি, কুসংস্কার, গোত্রে-গোত্রে সংঘাত, যুদ্ধপারদর্শিতার ক্রিড়া, দাসপ্রথা, তৎকালে প্রতিজ্ঞার সুকঠিন মূল্য পরিশোধের ঘটনা ঘুরেফিরে এসেছে।

বিভূতিভূষণের অনুবাদে উপন্যাসটি আমার ভালো লেগেছে অনেক। সেই একটা হারিয়ে যাওয়া সময়ের প্রাকৃতিক সৌন্দর্য, যু*দ্ধ, বিভিন্ন গম্ভীর কথোপকথন, ঘটনার ঘনঘটার অনুপুঙ্খ বিবরণ সব মিলিয়ে পুরো মিডিয়্যাভাল ইংল্যান্ডের আবহ বিভূতির অনুবাদে বেশ উপভোগ্য এবং মানানস‌ইভাবে ফুটিয়ে তুলা হয়েছে।

আইভ্যানহোতে মজার কয়েকটা সারপ্রাইজ আছে। একটি প্রতিযোগিতা এবং সেড্রিক স্যাকশনের ভয়াবহ বিপদে এগিয়ে আসেন ফিকশনের এক কিংবদন্তি ধনুর্ধর। এই তীরন্দাজের উপর বেইস করে ডিসি কমিক্সের গ্রীণ অ্যারোও কিংবা মার্ভেলে হক আইসহ বেশিরভাগ ফিকশনাল তীরন্দাজকে কোন না কোনভাবে প্রভাবিত করা হয়েছে।

আইভ্যানহোর নৈপুণ্য-উদার হৃদয়ের প্রকাশের পাশাপাশি ঐ ফিকশনের কিংবদন্তি তীরন্দাজের উপস্থিতি খুব ভালো লেগেছে। আশ্চর্যের বিষয় হলো পুরো উপন্যাসে আইভ্যানহো নিজেই আছেন অল্প সময়ের জন্য। এটি সম্ভবত রব রয় সিরিজের পঞ্চম ব‌ই। অবশ্য আগের কোন ব‌ই না পড়েও আইভ্যানহো ইজিলি পাঠ করা যায়।

আমি কোন রিভিউতে প্রোডাকশন কোয়ালিটি নিয়ে তেমন একটা বলিনা। তবে প্রতীকের এই ব‌ইটির প্রোডাকশন মান টপ নচ। ওয়াল্টার স্কটের অন্যান্য ব‌ইগুলো সময়-সুযোগ হলে পড়ে নিবো। 'আইভ্যানহো' এর অনুবাদকর্ম যেন বিভূতিভূষণ বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়ের‌ই জন্য ঠিক করা ছিলো।

A novel set in the aftermath of the Third Crusade (1189–1192).

It deals with the enmities brooding between the Normans conquerors and the Saxon former occupants of England... Now you can plainly see it is fashionable 19th reenactment of History, with byronic characters strutting in medieval garment.

I remember how impressed I was with Scott, writing in the first 19th century and setting a close to meliorative portrait of Jews. That is, mainly in the embodiment of Rebecca.

I also remember how dreary and tedious and dull this reading have been.

Be prepared. Sir Walter Scott will take you to an era with great detail and adventure. Ivanhoe contains a fascinating portrayal of the Saxon and Norman cultures and it has it all: magnificent battles, corrupt priests and abbots, estranged fathers and sons, Robin Hood, Richard the Lionhearted, Knights Templar... I love this book so much.

5+ stars (7/10 hearts). I really, really love this book. The setting—England. The era—medieval. The time—Richard Cœur-de-Lion & Robin Hood. The historical accuracy in this book is amazing. The characters are wonderful. There is so much humour, so much beauty, so much wisdom, so much nobility, so much excitement. The plot shows the genius of the author. I love Rowena and Rebecca so much... and Brian. Oh, Brian. He was so, so very close...
