Qeyd: Resenziya 2012-ci ildə yazılıb və redaktə olunub.

Vacib həyat dərsi çıxır əslində bu romandan. Sevgini göstərmək üçün təkcə bir yol yoxdur. Sadəcə müəyyən hərəkətlər yoxdur. Sevgi qəlbdədir və mütləq digərlərinə təsir edir. Elə ona görə də, həmin şəxs (romanda adı verilmiyib, əlbəttə bunda da bir məna var) uşaqlıq eşqini seçir. Buna baxmayaraq, tanrını unutmur. Düzdür, ona verilən güc geri alınır, amma əvəzində ürəyinin dərinliklərində olan həqiqi sevgi anlayışı iki dəfə artır. Paulo Keolyo yaradıcı bir yazardır. Keolyonun duyğusal dilindən sevgini və dinlə bütünləşmiş həyat fəlsəfəsini oxumaq bəzən məni təəcübləndirdi, bəzən isə emosionallaşdırdı. Tələsmədən və diqqətlə.

Yaxın dostumun romanla bağlı fikirləri isə belə oldu: Seçimlərin arasında əzilib qalmaq çox çətin və ağır hissidr. Bəyənmədiyim məqamlar çox idi. Bir çox məqamların cavabları isə islam dinində mövcuddur. Əgər Əlkimyagər əsəri ilə müqayisə etsək, Əlkimyagər daha yüksək pillədədir və daha yadda qalandır mənim üçün.

Ok where do I start. Personally for me, whenever you mix religion with a special type of philosophy I get this sense as if someone is calling my name. This book called my name. The character Pilar reflects us all in a way. The man in the story (completely nameless) has loved ever since they were little. They go about roaming in the street for a vacation, but her religion takes a whole different turn.

He guides her through life in a span of a week. Thats pretty cool. They keep mentioning 'Her'. As is the Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus and mother to all. What kept me reading was how they discussed god consisting of both male and female. God has a face of a woman and a man. I know, shocking... this is just a VERY brief summary to what the book has to offer. Coelho never disappoints. (Except for The Spy, I'm not really sure what he was thinking.)

Thank you, Mr Coelho.
At a time when my parents and my son are dying, and can't accept love, help and support, this one paragraph in your Author's Note gave me joy and hope:
"But ultimately there is no good reason for our suffering, for in every love lies the seed of our growth. The more we love, the closer we come to a spiritual experience. Those who are truly enlightened, those whose souls are illuminated by love, have been able to overcome all the inhibitions... They have been joyful — because those who love conquer the world and have no fear of loss. True love is an act of total surrender.
"...One doesn't love in order to do what is good, or to help, or to protect someone. If we act that way, we are perceiving the other as an object, and we are seeing ourselves as wise and generous... To love is to be in communion with the other and to discover in that other the spark of God."
You have chartered for me a path of sanity, serenity, and true generosity. I can only hope to be able to walk it!

By the River Piedra I Sat Down and Wept" tells of Pilar, a frustrated scholar looking for some greater meaning in the endless cycle of her days. When a childhood friend contacts her, she is surprised to learn that her former playmate is now a charismatic spiritual leader, someone revered as a miracle worker. She is even more astonished when he reveals that Pilar has always been his great love. Confused by this sudden opportunity for a new chance at life, Pilar gradually comes to realize that the man she loves is being called upon to choose between her and his spiritual calling. As the suffering lovers travel through sacred sites in the French Pyrenees, the difficult choice they face offers a startling revelation about the divine and the redemptive power of love. Full of warmth and wisdom, joy and unexpected sorrow, their story is a magical celebration of the endless possibilities that life has to offer, and a fable about opening your heart to miracles.

True love is an act of total surrender.

By The River Piedra I Sat Down And Wept, by Paul Coelho, is one of the most beautiful books I’ve ever read. It brought me to tears. It’s a short and sweet love story, yet significant and full of lessons in life and love. The love story so deeply moves me. And no, it’s not typically just another love story about two childhood love interests going back together and pursuing their long-lost love. It’s about what real love is and the different kinds of love.

Pilar was an independent and strong young woman who lost her faith and also lost her love. And how much she endures hurt, pain, and happiness for her to regain her faith in the man she loves.

n  “Waiting is painful. Forgetting is painful. But not knowing which to do is the worst kind of suffering.”n

How true. The hardest hindrance Pilar had to face when she was slowly gaining back her faith was deciding whether to let go of the only man she loved to continue on his mission or be with him. I felt my heart jumping because of Pilar’s emotions and dilemma as if I was with her from beginning to end.

This book showed us what it’s like to fall in love and made us realize that sometimes there are decisions we have to make or choose that will hurt the person we love.

And most importantly, this book taught us that love requires taking chances. It’s not a matter of winning or losing; it’s about taking risks. About being brave and using every opportunity that comes our way because life is too short to dwell on "what ifs."

This book was written beautifully. And although Paulo Coelho never names Pilar's male friend, it’s made the book more intriguing and unique.

Highly Recommended. You should read this and get drenched in the magic of love. :)

“If pain must come, may it come quickly. Because I have a life to live, and I need to live it in the best way possible. If he has to make a choice, may he make it now. Then I will either wait for him or forget him.”
This book was so relatable, so heartfelt. I think I should read it every year.

Pilar is like all the other woman from the barrio who is smart and has her life all planned. But as she visits a childhood friend that she secretly loves. She embarks in a journey that will give her a chance to rebuild her life and have the gift to love ones again.
As she meets her childhood friend, she eventually not only learns that this guy had planned to enter the seminary but also that he is a visionary of the Virgin Mary and he is able perform miracles by curing. She then leaves the normal life she has been living and has been hating and sets her life to be with this man and be with him while he cures and preach all through out the world when she realize that there are other means of serving God other than being a priest. But after she excites her mind for this dream life, she then learns that the man she loves just recently denunciated his power to cure to the Virgin Mary to live a normal life that he expected Pilar to prefer. Pilar, after knowing about this- knowing she wouldn’t live the extra ordinary life she had dreamed- went by the River Piedra and sat down and wept blaming herself to be the reason why this guy will fail to cure the lives of many men.

Review:
“Very inspiring. I could see myself through Pilar: the best character I see myself into so far. This story is very close to my heart. A simple story, with an important lesson.”

PS. I have a crush on someone who’s planning to be a priest. i_i. It doesn’t feel good. X)

Lesson: p.95

“If pain must come, may it come quickly. Because I have a life to live, and I need to live it in the best way possible. If he has to make a choice, may he make it now. Then I will either wait for him or forget him.
tWaiting is painful. Forgetting is painful. But not knowing which to do is the worst kind of suffering.”

There's a plot (two people who were a couple in their youth meet up and fall in love again), but the story doesn't actually have a lot to do with the plot. This is well-written but it's too written - there is too too much verbosity, too much meandering, too much philosophical meandering that really isn't as clever as it might look at first glance. My biggest irritation, however, is how damned preachy it is.

B E A U T I F U L is the appropriate word to describe this novel. ;)
A Novel of Forgiveness and Self-Discovery -- what else could you possibly wish for? :p

The story could more easily be described as a story of love, as it strives to show that “true love is an act of total surrender”. At a deeper level, Paulo Coelho also gives the message that there are no rules when it comes to love. :D

The novel also shows how "TRUE-TO-LIFE-SITUATION" of love is ridiculously connected to fairy tales (as quoted from the book):
There's nothing deeper than love. In fairy tales, the princesses kiss the frogs, and the frogs become princes. In real life, the princesses kiss princes, and the princes turn into frogs.
LOL,if I will put this into simpler words, it would be:
There's nothing deeper than MARRIAGE. In fairy tales, when princesses and princes get married, the princes turn into kings but in real life situation, when a man marries a woman, the man will be legally "named" as the husband and get fed up with the married life which (most likely -__-) he got himself with and sooner or later they will turn into FROGS -- JERKS. And the man and woman who were madly in love before would ask for legal help and go for a divorce.

I am absolutely NOT AGAINST marriage, but sadly, divorce has been a recent routine for most of the disrupted couples in the world.
DIVORCE or ANNULMENT have always been an issue and ironically, a solution for an unwanted marriage :(

Lastly, I think the novel calls the attention of all the men, soon-to-be-husbands and BOYFRIENDS in the world. It covertly and indirectly teaches all men to believe in women and to stop discriminating women's effort and strength. (As quoted again from the book):
He thinks I'm weak, cowardly, unable to fight for what I want. Even without a kiss, the princess is transformed into a frog.

@.@

ooooooh~ Before I end my review, I will (again) quote a passage from the book (which I loved <3 hihi):
"Waiting is painful. Forgetting is painful. But not knowing which to do is the worst kind of suffering."
