Reading Neruda heightens a sense of passion and awakening to the soul. My favorite, Tonight I Can Write the Saddest Lines holds a special meaning for me. I still read Neruda and think of what could have been, had I not made a huge mistake. If you have a true love that was lost, or are just passionate about life, by all means read Neruda's poetry. And keep your loved ones close.

and something started in my soul,
fever or forgotten wings,
*
And I, infinitesimal being,
drunk with the great starry
void,
likeness, image of
mystery,
felt myself a pure part
of the abyss,
I wheeled with the stars,
my heart broke loose on the wind.

*
The birds of night peck at the first stars
that flash like my soul when I love you.

i'm the biggest sucker for the intrinsic value of combining the mundane and lazy with requited romantic love. i think it makes everyone's life really pretty. and that's coming from an existentialist...

a collection of some of the poems from the movie of the same title. it's not really just about love - or romantic love to be specific. not that there's something wrong with romantic love, just that i think it's more than romance. my most favorite piece in the book? "poetry". very powerful. "...but something started in my soul, fever or forgotten wings... and i, infinitesimal being, drunk with the great starry void, likeness, image of mystery, felt myself a pure part of the abyss, i wheeled with the stars, my heart broke loose on the wind." i know this poem by heart. this poems keeps me sane, and sometimes, the opposite. either way, both are great.

Not going to pretend that I love Pablo Neruda or this work. Some of the poems sound as if someone simply threw random flowery words together and wrote them down when they formed a proper sentence. Either read such works in their original language or should skip them.

This very brief book of poetry presents odes to love of all types, physical, metaphysical, love of nature, that first moment of meeting the love of poetry itself. "Poetry" is one of my favorites.

I mean, it's Pablo Neruda. How can you go wrong? And this edition of the ten poems focused on in the movie "The Postman" includes the poems in both English and Spanish, which is wonderful. If you are an English speaker with a decent ability to speak and read Spanish (but not fluency), you can get a feel for Neruda's rhythm while also reading and able to fully comprehend the poem in English. If you speak either of the two languages, and want to learn/get better at the other, there likely isn't a more enjoyable way to practice than with Neruda's poems side-by-side in both languages. Reading this has also made me want to see the movie, which I never have, though I've known about it for years. All is connected.

1. “ leaning into the afternoons i fling my sad nets to the sea that beats on your marine eyes”
2. “ leaning into the afternoons i cast my sad nets towards your oceanic eyes.”
