I was let down by this acclaimed poet and that saddens me. I'm not sure what I expected, but his work is only so-so to me. I'm sure a lot of it was lost in translation, and that only makes me even more sad that I don't speak Spanish well enough to read his original words. Granted, this is hardly a fair sampling of his work, but I was using it to determine whether or not I'd look into his writing further. Perhaps I'll revisit him in a few years.

Poems are what you find in other Neruda selected works, but these translations are horrible, sorry. This seems liked it was rushed out to catch a ride with the movie release.

Neruda's style has always been captivating to me. He illustrates scenes that are beautiful, yet relatable, and puts into words feelings that are simple yet profound. This collection of ten poems, in English and Spanish side by side, is lovely and well-ordered, with an interesting arc of themes and a concluding poem that seems maybe out of place but also appropriate. An enjoyable, quick read.

Reading the rains
and Neruda
in the silence of an unending,
still monster
that moves so slowly
as if every inch of ground covered
was to leave the poet
a mile behind.

PS : Third reading and first since having watched the brilliant movie.

I Like For You To Be Still

I like for you to be still
It is as though you are absent
And you hear me from far away
And my voice does not touch you
It seems as though your eyes had flown away
And it seems that a kiss had sealed your mouth
As all things are filled with my soul
You emerge from the things
Filled with my soul
You are like my soul
A butterfly of dream
And you are like the word: Melancholy

I like for you to be still
And you seem far away
It sounds as though you are lamenting
A butterfly cooing like a dove
And you hear me from far away
And my voice does not reach you
Let me come to be still in your silence
And let me talk to you with your silence
That is bright as a lamp
Simple, as a ring
You are like the night
With its stillness and constellations
Your silence is that of a star
As remote and candid

I like for you to be still
It is as though you are absent
Distant and full of sorrow
So you would've died
One word then, One smile is enough
And I'm happy;
Happy that it's not true

- Neruda

Most of the translations were great. My favorite poems include "Fabula de la Sirena y los Borrachos" and "Puedo Escribir los Versos..." I have to admit that I liked "Fabula" better in English and "Versos" better in Spanish. The language definitely changes the overall effect/impact.

Wonderful, beautiful poems from a magnificent film. It was throught the film that I discovered the works of Pablo Neruda and I love them all.
