Felt like ruminating on the romantic with some poetry. After all April is Poetry Month. Enjoyed this short collection which was also my introduction to Neruda's work.
Lovely. This collection presents a single handful Neruda's love poems in an attractive, bi-lingual edition. Reading a collection of fine work in a high-quality production in small doses, such as 10 poems, is more pleasurable experience than delving through a 200 pound Collected Poems with bargain printing.
What can I say about this book that would do it justice? The back cover describes Neruda as a monster, which is an understatement. I'm curious to know why women love him so much. The answer is obvious of course, the sensuous appreciation and the unrestrained confident eroticism. But I can't see a woman loving Neruda for the same reasons as a man. He elucidates the problems of manhood, concedes the weaknesses and offers no tangible solace while conceding nothing and standing firm as only a monster could do.
"Love is so short, forgetting is so long"
The solace is there though, in the reading and rereading.
The translations presented here not only maintain, but effectively convey the vivid imagery and simple beauty of these poems in as wonderfully sparse a way as Neruda himself did in his original Spanish. Absolutely breathtaking.
I'm not a big poetry fan, but I sure love Pablo Neruda. I really enjoy reading the translations side by side. This is a great collection - quite short, but it gives you a good taste of his stuff.
i'm having trouble right now because this book is really deep. it's similar to the Tao te ching because I need to really study it and possibly keep reading it over to understand it fully. but it's beautiful so far.
