America before and after 9/11. No conspiracy, facts only. Today only lunatics and hypocrites insist on the 'inner job'.

I suppose I shouldn't say I enjoyed this book, given the grim subject matter, but I did come away feeling that I really understood the 9/11 attacks, the motivations and methods of the attackers, and the United States' response to them. I'm grateful that the 9/11 Commission took pains not only to do meticulous research, but also to keep the prose lively and to be honest about where there were controversies about and gaps in the information provided. I think it provides an excellent template for the proposed commission on the 1/6/21 riot.

A very thorough and important account of the events surrounding September 11, including a lot of global context, which I appreciated. A very difficult and upsetting read, but I learned a lot. I’m glad to better understand this period in history which still continues to have such a big impact on our government and society. I appreciate all the work put into this comprehensive report.

The history is interesting, but functionally, this book is not the best. Most of it is redacted. Of course I understand why it’s redacted— but I don’t think it’s worth it to read at this point in time

Part cold, hard novelization of the events, part extremely detailed outline of the history and intelligence surrounding the events of 9/11, it was at times an easy read, at times difficult, but overall, comprehensive and extensive.

Well narrated by Grover Gardner, this is an hour long (35 pages if you read the pdf.) summary of the 585 page (pdf) report. It discusses the government's awareness of the al-Qaeda threat and lack of awareness/preparedness of their intent to use American commercial planes as weapons of mass destruction. It discusses the failures of communication between government agencies and executives, and their inability to act on any intelligence, suggesting specific updates/reorganization of intelligence agencies that the commission believes could better thwart current technologically advanced threats.

I've been meaning to read this book for years and finally got around to it. It's a very meaningful record of that moment in history - exhaustively researched and seemingly free of a political bent (though folks will argue that point). I can't say I learned a lot more about the attacks than I knew, but the report makes it clear that the pattern of attacks starting with the WTC bombing almost a decade before illustrated that the US was for lack of a better word, already at war and was not dealing with it effectively. WTC bombing, the coordinated african embassy attacks, the barracks attach in Saudi Arabia, the USS Cole bombing etc. It's sad that it took such a massive attack with this level of casualties within the US borders to lead to a response and reforms which were overdo. The effectiveness of the recommendations of the committee have been proven by the absence of successful large scale attacks in the US in the 15+ years since 9/11.

It reads as being heartbreakingly naive, especially from twenty years out when many of the recommendations like treating prisoners decently haven't been ignored so much as actively and officially opposed.

Will we in the west ever learn?

Probably not.

This books was written as a report but even so it reads very well and is very interesting. I think that it is important that people read this book to see how complex the events leading up to the attack and the events around the world are. I also think it is an eye opener which shows just how hated the USA is by some other nations. My personal though on this is that they can kiss my butt, were the greatest nation in the history of the world and I could care less what they think. But, its important that we realize how we are seen so we can be prepared to defend ourselves or be prepared to deal with what may come.

The book is full of details and a bit long only because in is so detail rich, but I think it should have been longer and broader int its scope, expecially given the flaws we no know existed in the commission itself. I think it should be revisited now that some time has passed, more info is available and tensions are such that a more thoughtful exam is possible. But then I guess its possible tha it would simply be turned into political fodder.
