I first had to read and memorize this speech while in high school. At that time there was no way I understood the full meaning and importance of this speech. Over the years I have read it many other times and it has come to mean so much more. It is one of the best and most important speeches ever given in my opinion. It has so much meaning and something that every one should read and study at least once.

The pictures really fit the tone of the speech and show children some of the history behind what was happening at that time. I think this book would be a great one to read when students study the Civil War and have to memorize the Gettysburg Address. It would give visual learners something to help them remember the different parts of the speech.

Wow, reading these Civil War books as you listen to the news nowadays is frightening. At that point we were fighting about the humanity of African-Americans, now we are expanding the fight to people of different sexualities, and our racial divide seems focused more on brown people, but it is the same arguement. We are trying to roll back the rights of women. The similarities are frightening.

There is no cleaver or surprising way to introduce this speech. Written 150 years ago today, it is one of the definitive speeches of American history. This short speech was hardly so ambitious from Lincoln's view and he didn't intend it to be more than some token words to dedicate the National Cemetery at Gettysburg.

He started off by reminding the audience present that it had only been 87 ears since the The Declaration of Independence, and now they were about to dedicate a cemetery to those who died in the "great civil war."

Then he says this: "But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate—we can not consecrate—we can not hallow—this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract." After which he notes that nobody will remember this dedication but everyone will remember the battle itself so it is to them, the living, to see the war through until "all men" were free..."[and] that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom—and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth."

Honest Abe?

What did Abe know and when did he know it. The only president to lead us into civil war between the states Today this man memorial places him sitting in a huge god chair in Dc. This lying sob deserved his 3 days of mystery if any he ever did. I praise Lee not Lincoln. This is a well written and presented cover for a man who claiming remorse for deaths. I do not recommend school children read or study his CRAP this Abe Lincoln needs his history scrutinized by honest authors and not those programmed to salute or kneel before his memorial throne. Due to failing as a president I recommend reading by mature adults college students Age 18+

Lincoln's honouring of the dead at Gettysburg. His speech was profound he had a humbleness and empathy within it showing how good of a public speaker he was.Interesting to see the ideas of liberal nationalism in it.Odd seeing people link trump with lincoln
