The frist book to make me frustaited. I find this book fundementaly frustating. Orginaly i liked it until the finnal chapter that riun the book by the complete tonal wiplash. But know looking back retro specivly the book said nothing, i dont know what guene is telling me and when i have desuiced it with my friend i hear what they say and i go what are you talking about. There is one good sence just pased the midel of the novel witch is good. I fell that the book has the wrong protagonist as doria does not change. She goes from being pessamistc to being slight less pessamistic over 200 pages and i honestly dont know when she or why she changes. i would rated 1.5 starts as there are a few good moment and there some intresting element but i feel that guene just had a setting with out a plot

Finished reading this book Friday morning on my metro ride in to work. This was a great book for the metro since you could pick it up and put it down without losing any train of thought or end during a critical piece of analysis. Not a great book at all. It was cool, since the perspective was intriguing: French-born Moroccan adolescent girl growing up in poor suburbs around Paris with her Moroccan mother and absent father.

The timing of this book was good, given the riots last year in the suburbs of a nation that bases its national identity on liberté, egalitie, and fraternitiem, but seems to turn a blind eye on its large immigrant communities surrounding its largest cities, e.g. Paris and Marseilles. The book is also interesting due to its young author, herself a child of Algerian immigrants who grew up in the projects outside Paris.

Overall, not a great book, maybe not even a good book, but perhaps a necessary book. And, as noted above, it’s a quick read.

Fun and fiery coming of age novella with an upbeat ending, when she turns 16 and it seems she is getting a little traction in her life (including a sincere boyfriend who once tutored her in school). Working class Magrebin Paris is the setting and the anger at the exclusion of North African youth from beautiful France is not muted - she's pissed! But she's also pissed at the relentlessly misogynist immigrant Muslim culture, which results in middle aged fathers like her own dumping their wife when she fails to produce a son and finding a new fertile one back in the bled.
There are a lot of references that would be hard to follow for readers not familiar with North African immigrants in France - and the English translation doesn't help at all. For example, translations of many idioms using "merdre" in French are all translated without nuance to "shit," making the young protagonist sound inauthentic, and effectively removing it from many American high school reading lists. Also, puns and word play from darija Arabic just don't survive the translation - including the peculiar choice of title, which hardly makes any sense to an English reader.

Still, this feisty and often very funny novel is worth a read and raises a voice not heard often in English - or French.

This book is basically perfect. Doria (the teenaged narrator) is witty; sarcastic; cyncical, yet a dreamer; funny, in a primarily ironic way; insightful; tender; irreverent; and swears brilliantly. Like seriously, this book--ugh, I love it so much. Doria has an Eeyore soul but it so terribly endearing... Great perspective on class, gender and xenophobia in France, but given in a mostly humorous instead of tragic way. It's an easy read and a fresh voice--I guarantee it'll make you chuckle. RECOMMEND!

It’s okay

لحن و زبان این کتاب و سن و سال شخصیت اصلی آن، آدم را یاد «ناتور دشت» می‌اندازد اما فقط در همین حد. دخترک شانزده ساله‌ی این کتاب، با طنز ظریف و موشکافی که دارد، جهان پیرامونش را با فاصله‌ای روشنفکرانه نقد می‌کند اما در دو صفحه‌ی آخر کتاب، به این نتیجه می‌رسد که زندگی چندان بدی هم ندارد. خب البته اگر به این نتیجه نمی‌رسید، نویسنده هنوز داشت جلدهای بعدی کتاب را می‌نوشت.

I honestly don't know what to think about this book. It's French (thus the title) but I mean I read it and understood it (I'm doing A-Level French and I'm going to be studying French at Cardiff Uni this year) but the main character was so hard to wrap my head around. Her entire perception of the world was full of complaints about everything, it's not until we're over halfway through the book that she begins to show real emotion and it just made me so angry.
It was readable but frustrating - in a nutshell.

Je n'ai pas aimé le livre. Désolée. Mais Doria était très ennuyeuse et il n'y avait pas une "vrai histoire". Il était les petites histoires des gens dans sa vie.

C'est une possibilité que je n'aime pas le livre parce que français est ma deuxième langue, donc je comprends pas tout, mais je sais pas. Pour le plus part j'ai compris bien et juste quand elle a parlé des choses au hasard comme les films américains et les auteurs français que je n'ai pas pu comprendre qu’elle a voulu dire.

C'était juste d'accord. N'était pas un livre que je donnerais à un ami.

Denne boka er utrolig tatt på kornet av tilværelsen til en ung, muslimsk jente som vokser opp i en europeisk by. Doria er en fantastisk smart jente, og alt hun forteller sluker jeg med stor leselyst. Ekstremt troverdig jeg-forteller!

Mon avis : Nous ouvrons le journal intime de Doria, une adolescente banlieusarde (prenons le sens péjoratif du mot)

Doria vit avec sa mère. Toutes deux abandonnées par un homme parti chercher une descendance mâle dans son pays natal.

Le roman se compose de chapitres courts dont la thématique est une idée à développer ou un personnage à connaître. Le tout avec une pointe d'humour et un vocabulaire qui passe du registre soutenu au familier quand il s'agit de faire parler l'entourage de Doria.

Malgré la légèreté que peuvent dégager le titre et le sujet peu original, il y a un travail de fond que je tiens à mettre en avant: les échanges entre les personnages traitent des sujets importants des gens des cités : racisme, solidarité, rivalité, extrémisme religieux, le besoin d'évoluer, de changer et le souhait de s'en sortir.

Avec l'insouciance de ses 15 ans et sa pseudo naïveté , le personnage de Doria traduit avec ses mots les pensées des jeunes d'origine maghrébine (ou autre) qui ,depuis des décennies ,si ce n'est pas plus, condamnent et stigmatisent les mentalités ségrégationnistes.

Faiza Guène , elle, dénonce en écrivant ce qui fait mal de l'intérieur : famille et de l'extérieur : La France.
