Most of the short stories are characterized by recurring themes of Indians trying to cope with an alien way of life in America and the subtle identity crisis triggered in one by a life away from one's homeland. Barring a few vivid descriptions of various cultural idiosyncrasies, there is nothing striking about any of the stories. Neither do the stories achieve any emotional resonance of sorts nor is there any strong overarching message one can perceive from a peremptory reading of the collection. A distinctly lacklustre style of writing doesn't help the reader tide over lack of interest either. I only felt some semblance of a connection with the stories of Mr Pirzada, Bibi Haldar and The Third and Final Continent. Rest are completely forgettable.

O que torna Jhumpa Lahiri tão distinta de outros autores não é só o facto de escrever sobre personagens de ascendência indiana, oriundas de um universo que considero extremamente fascinante apesar de muito problemático, mas é também a atenção ao detalhe. São os pormenores na vida, na casa, nos pensamentos e nos actos das personagens que as tornam reais e me fazem querer saber mais sobre elas, mesmo quando não são particularmente simpáticas ou sensatas.
Nestes nove contos impregnados pelas mentiras que nos contam e que contamos a nós mesmos, temos pessoas desajustadas tanto do lugar como do momento em que se encontram, que têm dificuldade em viver com a realidade que se lhes apresenta e, vendo-se com pouco controlo sobre o seu destino, por questões familiares, amorosas, socioeconómicas ou geográficas, sentem-se alienadas e isoladas.
Das minhas histórias preferidas desta colectânea destaco três. Em “Um Problema Temporário”, um casal que perdeu um bebé aproveita os cortes de energia para contar segredos, o que tanto pode uni-los como afastá-los ainda mais. Em “Um Verdadeiro Durwan”, uma velhota humilde vive num vão de escada em troca de limpar e guardar um prédio, na esperança de ascender à categoria de porteira. Finalmente, no conto que dá título a esta obra, “Intérprete de Enfermidades”, um homem infeliz fantasia um pouco enquanto serve de motorista a turistas, nos dias em que não está a trabalhar num consultório médico como intérprete.
No fundo, é Jhumpa Lahiri que é uma intérprete maravilhosa dos vários males da alma.

A collection of short stories that focuses on the immigrant experience of Indian people, as well as a couple of stories that do take place in India.
Jhumpa Lahiri is a very polished writer- there is no denying that. I appreciate a short story that doesn’t leave me hanging at its conclusion and for the most part none of these did.

My favourites: A Temporary Matter, Interpreter of Maladies, Mrs. Sens and The Third and Final Continent.

The last two especially showed that yearning for home, that feeling of feeling different. Though these stories are all focused on one culture, I think anyone who has emigrated could identify with them. My parents came from Italy in the 1950’s. As a child, I remember my mother’s joy at receiving a letter from her mother, with news of home. I remember my father always saying that one day they would move back- they never did, but time takes away that urgency and desire.
The last story in the collection really showcases that journey of coming to terms with your new country.

“Still, there are times I am bewildered by each mile I have travelled, each meal I have eaten, each person I have known, each room in which I have slept. As ordinary as it all appears, there are times when it is beyond my imagination. “

گاهی اوقات نه کتاب سخت‌خوان است و نه حجیم ولی بقدری کند پیش می‌رود که خسته کننده می‌شود. مترجم دردها برای من همینجور بود.
شاید با کتاب مناسبی از لاهیری شروع نکردم اما هر چه بود تا مدت های طولانی سراغ این نویسنده نخواهم رفت.

الكتاب عبارة عن ٩ قصص قصيرة بتتكلم فيهم الكاتبة عن تفاصيل حياة الهنود المغتربين في الولايات المتحدة ومحاولتهم للتأقلم كما إنها تلقي الضوء علي إختلاف الثقافات ،الإغتراب ومشاكله الحنين للوطن ومحاولات البحث عن الهوية في مجتمع جديد..

إسلوب السرد رائع..الشخصيات مرسومة بعناية..الترجمة كمان ممتازة و علي غير العادة في في القصص القصيرة تتميز هذه المجموعة بإن معظم القصص حلوة جداً و متنوعة و حتلاقي نفسك مستمتع جداً أثناء القراءة خصوصاً في قصة شأن مؤقت،ترجمان الأوجاع،عندما أتي السيد بيرزادة و امرأة مثيرة...

يُقال عن جومبا لاهيري إنها نوع من الكُتّاب الذين يجعلونك ترغب في أن توقف أول شخص تراه وتحثه علي قراءة كتابها ..وأعتقد إن عندهم حق:)

The author is a fantastic writer and I always enjoy reading her work. However, this book confused me. It jumped around a ton with the characters; going back in time and telling different stories. I had a hard time figuring out who they were talking about and how everyone was linked. The stories were enjoyable and the writing was great. However, I just couldn't keep everyone straight and I didn't understand why all the different stories were being told and that's why this book was 3 stars to me.

خدا اگر کمی انصاف داشته باشه، باید دزدهای کتاب رو به جای خنک‌تری از جهنم بفرسته یا اگر خیلی مهربون باشه میتونه مارو بفرسته به جای گرم و خشک‌تر بهشت. خلاصه کاش حساب مارو با بقیه دزدها یکی نکنه .

This is a short story collection of around nine stories. All these stories are about different themes, but most of them are about Indian characters living abroad and trying to cope with their new place in different ways. I’m not a big fan of anthologies because I feel a few stories will not get their due for sure, and each reader will prefer one tale over the others.

I think this is the debut book for the author, and I have to say she did a very commendable job handling the issues the characters were facing. Character development is not something that can be discussed here due to space constraints, but they were adequate for what they were.

I feel like I might’ve liked this book more if I had read it instead of listened to it. The narrator, despite having a pleasant voice, could not change her voice for the male characters, and this caused some confusion for me while listening. Maybe my experience would have been different. Because I believe the author's writing has the depth I typically seek, I am still interested in reading more books by her.

Utter Sadness, minus one.

A collection of short stories by renowned Jhumpa Lahiri. Eight incredibly sad and nostalgic stories, with morsels of indian american culture. In a certain way this reminded me of Gabriel García Márquez, with that tragic mysticism that he used to imprint every single one of his tales. But the stories and novels of García Márquez, although mostly sad, are memorable, and impactful; they have closure, and overall end “well”, with a sort of tragic beauty. The stories of Jhumpa Lahiri are just tragic and mundanely depressing, leaving me only a feeling of profound sadness, and bitterness; minus one outstanding exception. Márquez I carry in my heart, and Lahiri, far from it. However, if you wish like feeling very depressed this is probably a perfect ten!

Go for the Best, consider the Good, whatever the Meh.

Completa Tristeza, excepto uno.

Colección de cuentos cortos de la renombrada Jhumpa Lahiri. Ocho cuentos terriblemente tristes y nostálgicos, con bocaditos de cultura india americana. En cierto modo me hizo recordar a Gabriel García Márquez, con ese misticismo trágico que solía imprimirle a cada uno de sus relatos. Pero los cuentos y novelas de García Márquez, aunque trágicos, son memorables, e impactan; tienen cierre, y dentro de todo terminaban “bien”, con una especie de belleza trágica. Los cuentos de Jhumpa Lahiri son sólo trágicos y mundanamente deprimentes, dejándome sólo una sensación de profunda tristeza, y amargura; menos una única sobresaliente excepción. A Márquez lo llevo en el corazón, y a Lahiri, lejos de ahí. Sin embargo, ¡si tenés ganas de deprimirte mucho esto es probablemente un perfecto diez!

Ir por lo Mejor, considerar lo Bueno, loquesea lo Meh.

ليس العنوان وحده ما يفتن في هذه المجموعة القصصية، للكاتبة الأمريكية من أصل هندي (جومبا لاهيري)، والتي نالت عليها جائزة البوليتزر لعام 2000 م، بل كذلك القصص الجميلة التي تأخذنا إلى عالم الهنود الأمريكان، فلقد تعودنا على روايات وقصص هنود بريطانيا، ولكنها المرة الأولى – بالنسبة لي على الأقل – التي اقرأ فيها لهندية أمريكية.

للاهيري تلك القدرة الفذة على خلق عالم متكامل من خلال صفحات قليلة، كما لديها القدرة على إبراز الشخصيات ونحت ملامحها، ففي أول قصص المجموعة (شأن مؤقت) تأخذنا إلى عمق منزل حزين لزوجين شابين – أمريكيين هنديين بالطبع -، فقدا مولودهما الأول عند الولادة، وهذا ألقى بظل ثقيل على علاقتهما، وخاصة والزوج كان غائباً في مهمة عمل وقت الحادثة، نراقب كيف يتجنب كلاً منهما الآخر، نراقب كيف ذوت تلك الروح الجميلة التي جمعت بينهما ذات يوم، ثم يحدث الشأن المؤقت، يصل إشعار من شركة الكهرباء يفيد بأنهم سيضطرون آسفين إلى قطع التيار مساء كل يوم، ولمدة ساعة واحدة، لإصلاح عطل ما، هكذا... تقرب ساعة الظلام، ويقرب العشاء الذي يتناوله الاثنان على ضوء الشموع بينهما، ويمنحهما فرصة البوح بمشاعرهما، بالحقائق التي يخفيانها، يا لها من قصة رقيقة، تنساب إلى القارئ بجمال.

كانت هذه إحدى قصص المجموعة التسع، والتي تتفاوت في جمالها بالتأكيد ولكنها تبرز موهبة لاهيري وفنها.
