My poolside reading yesterday - no worries about getting it wet.
Lots of long-term planning, litigation and loophole navigation but no courtroom theatrics; basically an unlikely story with a more or less predictable outcome. Just OK, but perfectly compatible with an air mattress, suncreeen, and a cold drink.
I don't know how I missed this book as I thought I read them as soon as they came out. One thing I've always thought about his books is that the endings fell flat. Not so this one!
Entertaining tale of a Mississippi lawyer who dies in a fiery auto accident. The problem - he's alive, and with 90 million that belongs to a government defense contractor and the lawyer's former partners.
The suspense comes when the particulars find out he's alive, and the hunt is on for the stolen goods.
#johngrisham #elsocio
Oh, what a tangled web we weave, when first we practise to deceive!
Excellent story and a cleverly written one at that! Intriguing and gripping until the end, ah yes, the ending…what am I to make of the ending?… Pretty sure it will leave the readers mind boggled, frustrated and feeling a little bad for Patrick. Some say it’s his just desserts. Awww.
POPSUGAR Reading Challenge 2021: #11 - A bestseller from the 1990s
I do own Grisham books, but only because family members keep buying them for me on birthday's and xmas's. I smile politely and thank them, wishing they would include the receipt. I have read this, and i don't recommend it unless you are 10 years old and want to start reading adult fiction. Dull, dull, dull. How this man is a best-selling writer is reflection of today's society's IQ.
An interesting-enough premise ruined by derivative, cheeseball prose; dragging, tedious storytelling; an irredeemably pompous protagonist suffering from a bad case of macho cool guy syndrome; and—how shocking—sexism.
This book was my first John Grisham novel. I read it in 3 days and could not help wonder how many persons disappear in the manner his character did. John Grisham thought of every turn in this book and it was good to see the greedy people surrounding the story get their due in their own right. I was hooked on John Grisham books after this. I've read this twice and plan on reading it a third time soon enough.
Wow! What a cleverly written story! One of the best books I have read in a long, long time. And with a twist of irony at the end. A real page-turner. Loved it.
