Most of us do job for living, to fulfill our amenities and additional needs even though the job is not much interesting. If somebody asks us why we are doing these dull jobs, we may bluntly shoot these questions to them : “Who will pay our monthly expenses?” and “Who will pay the loan amount that my bank has given to me to construct/buy my own house?” Sometimes a work which we regard as not interesting may take 10 hours to complete rather than the actual time of 6 hours and the work that is interesting gets finished with less time than the actual time. This book pours ideal solutions to make a dull job interesting to save more time in office and to spend the saved time with your sweetheart or family. So basically enjoy life as it comes. Forgive and Forget. Smile more often and enjoy your job. Make others feel worthy. So when you are kicked and criticized, remember that it is often done because it gives the kicker a feeling of importance. It often means that you are accomplishing something and are worthy of attention.

There are a lot of good nuggets in here that are still relevant 100 years later. While none of this is new information, reading it and seeing it play out in context of relationships and work was helpful to me. I don't always love Carnegie's anecdotes, but the book was still enjoyable to read and made me more aware of how I treat people.

Movies can be a great inspiration to further research. In the film Heathers, the cunning, antisocial, boyfriend who 'murders' the mean girls in a series of 'accidents', was reading Dale Carnegie's How to Win Friends and Influence People. I read that - the take away was review your interpersonal interactions each week and try to improve them by putting other's interests ahead of your own. Seems reasonable.

So when I saw another Carnegie book I grabbed it. How to Enjoy Your Life and Your Job was quite an easy read, in clear prose and a relatable anecdote telling style. There are plenty of references to early psychologists like William James, Carl Rogers and BF Skinner which must form the basis of much of the 'common sense' in this book.

People are too busy thinking about themselves to think about you, so unless you tie your wants and needs up with theirs, you will find it difficult to achieve your aims.

Many of the anecdotes are company presidents overcoming personnel issues or out manoeuvring unions in the heroic American Capitalist mode. Dale includes anecdotes which sound sincere about workers who seek to self overcome and improve within their limitations. A 'mere' mechanic can find satisfaction by improved service to his employer.

Class and gender are both points which seem to have dated in this book, from the 1970's, but with many references to a period much earlier, such as the 1920's, '30's or even before. Dale doesn't acknowledge the power inequality involved in the 'friendly' owner of a company individually visiting and interviewing strikers, nor the explicit sexism in citing research about 'runaway wives', and grateful secretaries.

Criticism's of heroic industrialists aside, there is much to like about this book. Use the golden rule, be humble, but i suggest if you meet a hobo freight-train riding magician (p115), be cautious about self disclosure, no matter how sincere his apparent interest in you might seem.

Nice to read..

Completed in 3days. The ideas shared in the book can be practiced by everyone and would be definitely be helpful.
In the last few chapters, i feel that author has not been able to properly justify the Chapter headings. Otherwise good read.

I love Dale Carnegie writing, as one of my favourite books is "How to stop worrying and start living". Which is probably why I couldn't like " How to enjoy your life and job" as much as I did with the previous one. Overall, nice light book to read.

I can understand why Mr. Carnegie's work has stood the test of time. Simple precepts are presented and then reinforced with multiple examples of application from people who the author knows or met through his courses where said precepts are taught. The prose is simple and accessible, even chatty in tone. Everybody should read this, imho.
