Es un libro que leí hace mucho tiempo pero que se queda para siempre en la cabeza. Lo disfruté tremendamente.

The story revolves around Rob Cole during 11th century. He became an orphan at very young age while learning his gift to recognize the near death when he held his mother's hand and the his father's hand. His siblings were adopted by many people and he became apprenticed to barber-surgeon. He developed yearning to be a physician. From a Jew physician, he learned that he need to go to Persia to learn from Avicenna, a celebrated physician. However, since he was a Christian, he wouldn't be allowed as they didn't want to have any trouble with the church. The church frowned upon the physicians, barber-surgeons as the priests believed that they were the only guardians of the body and the souls of the Christians. He decided to pose as Jew to learn from Avicenna.

Avicenna (Ibn Sina) was a real person who is regarded as the father of early modern medicine. He was a Persian polymath. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avicenna

It took more than 20 months to reach Persia. His travels included joining caravanserai, multiple countries through silk road from Anatolia to Persia and residing in Jewish community. Initially, I wanted to learn how Rob become a physician and how he himself become famous physician. So these diversions irked me. However, I caught with the author's enthusiasm on various areas. I read about caravanserai before. I learned a bit more. Jews learn multiple languages to do the business in various countries, Rob learn Persian from the Jew, also learning their culture. When caravanserai had to rest for winter, he went to live with Jews in Jewish villages where he learned a lot more about Jewish customs which became helpful to him when he posed as Jew.

Then comes Persia and the hospital setup. It is like our traditional gurukul. How many Persian words are in usage in Hindi now :) I discussed with my friends about how one religion/country considered the other religion/country as barbarians when they themselves were. The middle-eastern countries were advanced in medicine during 11th century when compared to England, the eastern countries were advanced than the middle-eastern countries before that. The Greeks were more advanced in medicine before that, as they dissected humans and learned the anatomy to treat the patients. However, much of that knowledge was lost because of the destruction of Alexandria library.

The story even provided glimpse of bubonic plague.

In the end, Rob flee Persia because of Seljuk Turks invasion. I looked up wiki to know about the difference between spice route and silk road. Learned that Seljuk Turks occupied Persia and blocked Europe's travel through the silk road resulting in crusades which resulted in Europe occupying/colonizing eastern countries. In every war, the religion and the economic advantage were the basic reasons. Though I don't know everything about crusades, but economic advantage makes sense.

A very satisfying read :)

Otro libro sobre la edad media que me ha fascinado, pero este como es de médicos todavía más. Me ha encantado el viaje a Persia y todo lo que él aprendió allí.

Noah Gordon es un escritor brillante. Maneja los detalles históricos con un cuidado tan metódico que es capaz de transportarnos directo a la Europa y medio oriente del siglo XI.
El médico narra paso a paso la juventud y madurez de Robert J. Cole y su gran convicción por convertirse en médico en una época en la que el estudio de la medicina era prácticamente equiparado al empleo de artes ocultas o con brujería.
Ante la caída del imperio romano de occidente y el tránsito de la humanidad por el oscurantismo de la edad media, sorprendentemente, el desarrollo de las ciencias se resguardó en Persia y otros países del medio oriente, lugares que en la actualidad son catalogados de fundamentalistas y de un pensamiento religioso que no se ajusta a los cánones modernos.
Es en esos escenarios en los que el personaje principal de la obra se ve obligado a transitar, haciéndose pasar por judío a través de lugares donde ser cristiano era penado con la marginación de las sociedades islámicas...un imperdible para los amantes de la novela histórica y de los estudiantes de medicina.

It took me 4.5 months to read this book, since it's the one I've been reading a page or two at a time on my phone whenever I find myself waiting around and needing a book to read. The style of The Physician made it a good one to savor in such a way. It's going to be really strange reading about someone else now when I find myself waiting, which happens a lot by the way.

Wow, this story really covers a lot of ground - literally. It starts out with a young orphan in the early 11th century who develops a yearning to improve his medical knowledge. This desire takes him from Britain to Europe, Persia, and as far as India. Rob is a remarkable man for his time, and it is heartbreaking at times to see him struggle and experience terrible setbacks.

Mostly, though, it's a hopeful tale of learning and compassion, of creative solutions to the closed-mindedness of the time period. It also highlights the religious prejudices of the Middle Ages while inspiring sympathy for individuals of each faith, and portrays each location and people that Rob encounters vividly. The time period really came alive through Rob's travels and relationships. I feel like I lived there.

At one point near the end, I was struck with a sudden fear that it was going to end tragically and I think I could have been induced to throw my phone after all Rob learned and went through. Thankfully it ended well, or as well as it probably could for the mindset of the times, and my phone was spared.

Quyển này ban đầu đọc vào cũng cuốn hút, kiểu một cuộc phiêu lưu đời người, từ khi Rob Cole còn là một cậu bé cho đến khi gặp “người thầy đầu tiên” - bác phó cạo kiêm thầy lang - rồi những danh sư đích thực khi lặn lội từ Anh quốc sang Ba Tư học ngành y.

Khi đọc xong “Người thầy thuốc” mình cảm thấy cũng không đến mức quá thích, nhưng từ lúc kết thúc rồi thì thi thoảng vẫn nghĩ đến trong đầu hành trình gian nan trở thành hakim - thầy thuốc - của Rob Cole. Tác giả Noah Gordon khéo léo kể cuộc đời ngồn ngộn sự kiện của Rob, với nhiều kiến thức từ tôn giáo, y học (gồm cả chữa bệnh dân gian đến y học chính quy), từ lịch sử đến quân sự, trong bối cảnh thời Trung cổ, giúp người đọc mở mang nhiều kiến thức.

Chuyện học y để làm bác sĩ ngày nay đã khó, nhưng thử hình dung thời Trung cổ, các giới luật tôn giáo cấm đụng đến thi thể con người thì làm sao giải phẫu cơ thể người, nhìn thấu vào bên trong mà chữa bệnh? Rob đã học để trở thành bác sĩ với tư tưởng tiến bộ, muốn được nghiên cứu trên cơ thể con người chứ không phải giải phẫu trên lợn rồi suy ra, áp dụng cho con người.

Truyện cũng mô tả rất kỹ cách người xưa học và hành nghề thầy thuốc, cách họ nghiên cứu, ghi chép y văn, tìm hiểu cách chữa những bệnh ngày nay bình thường như khi xưa thì vô cùng bí hiểm. Ngoài chuyện học và thực hành nghề y, tác giả còn tái hiện rất chi tiết những trận đánh, hành trình gian khổ vượt sa mạc của những đoàn lữ hành, cuộc thi chạy đua Chatir thời trung cổ, những cuộc đấu môn thể thao trí tuệ sau này được gọi là cờ vua.

Điều mình thích trong "Người thầy thuốc" là các nhân vật đều có cuộc đời thú vị, Rob Cole muốn đôi bàn tay mình chỉ cầm dao mổ cứu người nhưng từng buộc phải cầm vũ khí giết người. Còn thầy của Cole, bác sĩ giỏi nhất thế gian, bậc thầy nổi danh nhất trong mọi bậc thầy của nền y học Trung cổ - ibn SinaIbn Sina, dù bác đại tinh thông nhưng không dám vượt qua lề thói cũ, vẫn tin rằng có thể chữa bệnh cho người bằng cách nghiên cứu trên động vật.

Những người xuất hiện trong đời Rob như bác phó cạo, vua Ba Tư với những toan tính chính trị, những người bạn ở trường y ở Baghdad, mỗi người một cá tính... ai cũng có “đất” đầy đặn trong thiên truyện.

“Bốn mùa đến rồi đi nhưng có một thứ bất biến, không bao giờ lìa xa anh: đó là cái giác quan đặc biệt, sự nhạy cảm của người thầy thuốc. Dù anh có bị gọi giữa đêm khuya thanh vắng đến bên giường bệnh hay sáng ra ở phòng khám bệnh đông người, anh luôn luôn cảm nhận được những đau đớn của họ.

"Trong khi cố hết sức để làm giảm đau đớn cho con người, anh luôn luôn thấy lòng tràn đầy niềm biết ơn lẫn nỗi bàng hoàng - bây giờ đây cũng như những ngày đầu (...) - rằng Chúa Trời đã chọn anh, rằng anh là người đã được bàn tay Chúa Trời vươn ra và chạm đến, và cái khả năng để giúp đỡ và phục vụ đã được phú cho anh, cậu bé học việc của bác phó cạo".

Rob Cole biết rằng mình được trao sứ mệnh phải trở thành bác sĩ. Vì tin rằng đó là định mệnh, Rob sẵn sàng vượt qua con đường chông gai đó, dù có lúc phải từ bỏ tình yêu, đối mặt với cái chết, hay đội lốt một người khác cả chủng tộc lẫn đức tin, tất cả chỉ vì anh muốn trở thành thầy thuốc.

Quyển này mình đọc từ ngày thầy thuốc Việt Nam 27-2 nhưng sách to quá - 640 trang khổ lớn, nằm đọc rất vất vả, mà không có bản ebook tiếng Việt. Thành ra mình đọc xen kẽ tiếng Anh trên Kindle, khi thì lại đọc sách giấy tiếng Việt, hơi loạn xà ngầu (có ai giống mình đọc kiểu này không ^^’). Mãi thì đến cuối tháng 3 mới xong. Mình nghĩ nếu có đọc lại trong một tâm thế thư thả hơn thì mình sẽ cảm thấy sách hay hơn. 3.5*

Una obra fantástica, tanto en lo referido a la historia que contiene y su protagonista como a su calidad literaria, pues la tiene, sin abusar de recursos estilísticos pero con un tratamiento del lenguaje placentero y bastante bien estructurado.

La manera en que adentra al lector en diferentes culturas, ámbitos religiosos y paisajes es hermosa, quizá no espectacular como otros autores han conseguido, pero sí muy bien desarrollada. El argumento sobre el que se sustenta la trama es especialmente original, hasta el punto de que, con seguridad, muchos de los escritores actuales y los que están por venir estarían deseosos de tener tal idea en sus manos para plasmarla en palabras. También es digno de mención el trabajo de documentación tras la historia misma.

En cuanto a la expresión de sentimientos, queda claro que consigue plasmarlos perfectamente en la imaginación del lector sin facilitarle la tarea excesivamente. Es decir, en el libro no abundan extensos párrafos o explícitas frases con las que se evoquen dichos sentimientos, sino que son algunos detalles, toques, personajes y diálogos con los que, brevemente, se recrean a la perfección. Es un libro para "entender" y leer más allá de lo escrito.

Las aventuras narradas en él no son apoteósicas ni esplendorosas. Tampoco se encontrarán momentos muy épicos. Es un libro confeccionado con sucesos más cotidianos y discretos que, sin ser grandes, conforman en su conjunto una gran historia.

Un acertado final pese a que quizá podrían existir otras alternativas para engrandecerlo, aunque no hay mucho objetarle tampoco. La evolución del personaje es patente y se disfruta mucho al notarla conforme se avanza en la lectura de la obra. Tanto es así que incluso pueden compartirse muchos pensamientos y sentirse cierto orgullo por algunas decisiones y acciones del protagonista, pensando que seríamos nosotros mismos los que lo hubiéramos empujado hacia el mismo camino.

Quizá un pequeño apunte para El médico, como opinión personal, es que no hubiera estado de más un toque más exótico del que tiene (que no está ya nada mal), así como algo más de magia y narración con tintes más épicos, aprovechando una de las culturas centrales en las que se basa. Sin embargo, esto es más bien una salvedad.

Varios son los párrafos y citas profundos que descansan en esta gran obra literaria, endulzando el paladar y la mente. Además, hay muchos mensajes ocultos que merece-y mucho-la pena descubrir poco a poco.

La medicina es un arte bastante próximo a mí por gratas circunstancias de la vida y por ello a este libro siempre le guardaré un muy especial cariño, porque sin haber llegado a parecerme espectacular, ha sido muy hermoso y gratificante y eso, a fin de cuentas, es mucho decir y es un gran regalo, como lo será también para todos los profesionales que dedican su vida al servicio de la de los demás. Los que crean en "vocación" y los que no encontrarán aquí algunas respuestas y una historia y testimonio bellos en los que seguramente se vean reflejados todos los que aman la medicina como razón y luz de su vida, aquella misma que, varios siglos atrás, guió a Robert Jeremy Cole entre las arenas del cálido desierto.

Desde criança que Rob. J. pegava nas mãos dos doentes, e podia sentir se a morte estava próxima. Sentia também uma grande curiosidade em relação às doenças; como surgiam, como evoluíam, o desejo de encontrar a melhor forma de aliviar o sofrimento e, se possível, curar os doentes.
Esta vontade levou-o a perseguir um sonho, impossível para muitos. Sem família nem nada que o prendesse a uma Inglaterra atrasada e ignorante, nos primórdios do séc XI, lançou-se à aventura e, montado numa carroça durante dois anos, atravessou a Europa rumo à Pérsia, (hoje, Irão) para aprender medicina com o melhor e mais consagrado físico (médico) da época.
Pôs-se à prova, por vezes nas mais primitivas condições humanas, e enfrentou sozinho, os desafios de tão grande jornada, sem outra ajuda além das suas mãos e da sua mente.
Conheceu pessoas e aprendeu a distingui-las; àqueles tão maltratados pela vida quanto ele, abriu o seu coração e acolheu-os para a vida toda, com outros provou o sabor da traição e do desprezo. Aparou os golpes sem nunca vacilar ou pensar em desistir.Com todos aprendeu e fez-se um homem melhor. Por vezes, foi obrigado a passar ao lado da lealdade, a mentir e fingir, desafiando regras impostas por religiões primitivas, na ânsia de descobrir mais para poder fazer melhor. Foi além dos objetivos e,humilde, viu o reconhecimento das suas capacidades. Regressou a casa com profundas cicatrizes na alma e um grande sonho: criar em Londres um hospital como quele onde aprendera.
Não terminou exatamente como estava à espera. Os sonhos são sonhos, não são a realidade e, por vezes, a vida pode levar-nos por caminhos imprevistos e mostrar-nos a felicidade em locais inesperados.

De escrita fluida sem grandes floreados, devora-se com avidez enquanto nos vamos enredando, prazenteiramente, na força das personagens e nas emoções da história.
Um livro que me vai ficar na memória, uma história avassaladora, que gostaria muito de ver bem passada ao ecrã.

Ein tolles Buch, das mich in eine absolute fantastische Welt des Mittelalters entführt hat. Für mich auch eine neue Erfahrung diese Zeit nicht aus der Sicht von kämpfenden Rittern und Königen zu erleben, sondern im Gegenteil zu sehen wie versucht wird das Leben zu erhalten statt zu töten, Grenzen zu überwinden statt aufzubauen und auszuweiten.

Leider ist das Buch nicht 100% geschichtlich akkurat, deswegen sind die Fun Facts, die ich daraus nehme mit Vorsicht zu genießen :D
